  • Damn he was depressed! Look at 0:54

  • @SuperOzzilla he just liked to look tough in his pictures....I think I read that in Autumn de Wildes book

  • There is something inexplicably perfect about Elliott's music. It makes me never want to listen to anything other artist ever again; and when I do, I inevitably end up on my Elliott Smith playlist because nothing else measures up to his genius. He's the only artist I can listen to that makes me sad, happy, hopeful and depressed all at once.

  • We miss you Elliott!! You are great|

  • i too find myself frusturated by elliott smith, however my frusturation comes from knowing i will never be able to put things like he could, i mean honestly he doesnt have one bad lyric, he felt as though the song i figured you out was a badly written song yet any artist today woud have trouble writing a song as well as that, and yet songs like condor ave, abused, last call, tomorrow tomorrow, the enemy is you, kings crossing, alameda, stickman, and true love, are even better written

  • @peacelovemusic2461 Were you extremely tired when you wrote this? It's just barely understandable.

  • @HawthornxxVideos i was basically saying that even his weakest songs, or songs he say are weak, are masterpieces and its frusturating to know that there really wont ever be another musician like him

  • love the lyrics... "now you can do whatever the hell you want to. nah, na, na, na, nah"

  • HOW can you dislike this????

  • This song is absolutly brillant!! A guy and his girlfriend get into a fight, she dies in a car accident after falling asleap behind the wheel and he's left to think. He said in a live version that he wrote this when he was 17.

The world's darker now that he's gone.

  • nice video! I've just uploaded a really ES-inspired song called Happy Again, would be great to hear what you think..xo

  • love <3 <3

  • how is Elliott Smith not more popular question mark

  • He wrote this song when he was 17 ..haha I was picking my nose at that age..

  • lol, did you find anything good?

  • Yeah, Roman Candle was released in 1994. Elliott was 25. Not even close to 16 or 17. But still amazing.

  • @pushherinthesnow doesnt mean he didnt write the song years earlier. its not like he turned 25 was suddenly blessed with musical talent then recorded an album. lots of songs he might have wrote when he was much younger =]

  • "unless a lightbulb really loved him very much"

  • first time i hear this, it's beautiful!!

  • nice video, great song

  • love this

  • miss you

  • "looking for some kind of clue..

they never get uptight when a moth gets crushed"

he's gone. the details are irrelevant. r.i.p

  • everythings relevant

  • Chimes fell over each other, I fell onto my knees

The sound of the car driving off made me feel diseased.

So evocative. So sad. So close to home.

    I love you, Elliott. XO

  • This is the first negative or hateful thing Ive seen under an Elliott youtube vid- tell you anything? check yourself

  • This topic of his suicide has haunted me ever since I found out about him back in 2007, I am not sure the police did a good job, unless not a complete one, given the fact that forensics are so advanced now, and they are always so meticulous with their work. Anyways, I wish he was still alive, one of the things I regret the most is the fact that i will never see him live.

  • she took the oldsmobile out past eastridge TN.....

  • it makes sense that he wasn't on drugs. addicts get super depressed when they are clean.

  • these people who talk about his girlfriend just want justice for elliott. all signs point to her being guilty.. esp... like... having the energy to stab yourself once through bone and heart tissue.. let alone twice. yeah.. weird. and self defense wounds. oh well. i'm just glad he's finally free.

  • wasnt he 16 when he wrote this???

    anyway

    love you elliott

    XO

  • yeah, he was pretty young. i recall he was 17

  • ...it is about my ex-wife!

    can you beat that...huh?

'...it will make a whisper out of you!'

  • Whats this song about??

  • How someone dies doesn't bring him or her back. Let it go.

  • don't worry about his girlfriend's supposed part in his death, good people. he was beautiful...you'll meet him if you love him like you do. life's eternal.

  • Thats was coolest thing I have ever read in my life. So hopeful.

  • if his girlfriend killed him, she killed a huge part of the worlds beauty as well and that is simply unforgivable. RIP Elliot, we miss you.

  • it sort of annoys me in a way that i ever listened to elliott because nothing else comes even close to how great he is.

  • my sentiments exactly

  • I'd like to hear Simon & Garfunkel cover this.

  • r.i.p elliot

  • I was really sick this past summer. I listened to Elliott. It was better than any medicine.

  • he is my absolute favorite artist.

everytime i listen to him i think to myself 'fuck everyone else.'

  • t5his is my fave elliot smith song.

    :]

  • pretty videos, thanks!

  • Great tune! Haunting melodie!

Him taking his own life is such a waste! Why? ...I can feel his torture in his music! Why did he punish his ownself? He left off way too soon!

  • i don't think he killed himself, he was completely clean and sober when he died, he wasn't going through a bad time, and he was stabbed twice, his death was never ruled a suicide

  • It's still all too unclear for me to take either opinion. He had been clean for awhile, but think about why he took so many drugs? He had alot of stuff from his childhood that he was trying to repress, so if he's not high then he has to face that shit which can be hard...but still, it is hard to imagine anyone stabbing themselve TWICE.

  • yea, but another thing, he girlfriend had said they got in a huge fight just before, and elliott had major relationship trouble, i mean probably dated girls that were more fucked up than him, she was probably on herion at the time, i mean look at who kurt cobain was married too, i mean honestly its like 50 50 for me, but i don't want to rule anything out

  • That, and during the fight, she locked herself in the bathroom. She heard a scream a few minutes after. She came out, and saw Elliott turn to her with a butcher knife sticking out of his chest.

Seems way too much like a murder rather than a suicide. I say his girlfriend was lying. She killed him. That's my opinion, anyway.

  • You don't know much about heroin do you? :\

  • maybe he asked her???...i mean he had been contemplating it for a decade... He also shot up heroin and tried to overdose plenty of times! He jumped off a cliff it's not like he didn't have the will too to it it was just the right time!? Who knows? Only his ex! THE ONLY THING i AM UPSET ABOUT IS HE COULDN'T HELP HIMSELF...

  • The thing that gets me, is there was no alcohol or drugs in his system when he died. There were only normal prescribed levels of antidepressants. I'm sure the cops did everything they could to find the answer, but in the end, Elliott's family probably just wanted to get on with life.

  • Why did he take his life? His songs are so haunting!

its like there was this haunting inside him that he had to get out, -with music.

  • He wrote this around the age of 17.

    I am 17.

    And I write music.

And I know for a fact that I'm no where near this.

It saddens me, and at the same time amazes me at his genius.

I wish I met this man.

  • he wrote the lyrics and chords to it

but it doesnt mean he recorded it at age 17. It was a couple years after that. Even after heatmiser so i would say he was like 23 or 24.

    you still have time :)

im 16 and i write and record music. someday ill post it on youtube

  • Nah he originally wrote Condor Ave. circa age 17. It was one of the first songs he sent to his local record label on his later to be known album "Roman Candle".

Theres a sample of an earlier version recorded on wikipedia if you look up Elliott Smith on there.

  • He wrote it in high school but recorded it when he was like 25. The version on Wikipedia is the same as this one.

  • @123mako love roman candle... i cant believe this guys so under rated... to me hes better then the beatles... ya i said it... hes the greatest artist to ever walk on this planet... no wonder why he wanted to leave it so bad... no one deserved him... hes to good for humanity and society and the ugly fucking guts inside of everyones heartless bodies...

  • Being a musician - even a poor excuse for one that nobody will likely hear - I find myself considering the inescapable disquiet born of knowing that this was a person who dreamed, and thought, and created, and destroyed, as all people do; that, though hopefully under quite different circumstances someone will be able to say of me one day, he was here, and now he is no more.

    And yet, the song remains.

  • @Vamphaery I hope you use that statement as song lyrics. Perfectly stated.

  • @Vamphaery and will remain until we are wiped out. then it and everything shall be no more for good. bummer.

  • @unholychunk True. Nothing is eternal. Although, that's probably as it should be.

  • uggh this is my favorite. I love it so much.

  • Very nice... I love this song.

  • i love him so much it makes me want to die! ugh, why can't he be here?

  • I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow. <3
