  • Barbara Harris does the best Carol Burnett!

  • Barbra is so perfect for this

  • Thanks so much for sharing this--I've loved the Alan Alda-Barbara Harris 1966 original cast album ever since stumbling across it at a public library, but never had the pleasure of seeing the actual show or any tv clips from that production. Sometimes these clips end a bit abruptly so maybe it's the cut-off, but Harris's "Gorgeous" number seems to fall a bit, um, flat at the end (no pun intended, I swear). She seems to turn to run off the stage before the song is quite over, which looks odd.

  • @TheCatgirl6 You should have seen what she was like when she did win the Tony a few minutes later. She appeared absolutely contemptuous and her gratitude speech was delivered with sarcasm. Very strange.

  • @unclealand Wow... that's interesting. Had she tired of the role, do you think? Or wanted to leave the production for awhile for another opportunity but wasn't allowed to go? Maybe she was feuding with director Mike Nichols or castmates Alda and/or Blyden? The backstage stuff is sometimes more intriguing (and entertaining) than what the audience gets to see. Maybe BH was very insecure and that behavior was how it presented. Whatever--it's a great show and I love her in it. :-)

  • Barbara Harris rulez. though Kristin was good, she can never top Harris's Eve. I've heard both versions, and BHs melts my heart every time.

  • My school is doing The Apple Tree this year :) I saw it last night.

  • Incomparable. Harris is a once-in-a-lifetime star.

  • how did she change so fast?? did she have a double come out after she left the room?

  • @BwayDreamer1128 The girl who played Ella/Passionella at my school changed super fast too!

  • @BwayDreamer1128 I am playing ella/passionella right now and it is called for in the script to have a double come in so the change isn't so fast :) hate to ruin the magic

  • @bwaybaby1991 I figured that was probably the case :) They must have pre-recorded Barbara Harris's voice - is that what you're doing in your show? And congrats by the way - it's an incredible role! Break a leg in your performance!

  • @BwayDreamer1128 for the really high stuff they actually had someone else sing it 1. because she couldn't and 2. because its really funny when you can tell that she just mouths it haha. Unfortunately I dont have anyone else singing it so I have to attempt it every night haha thanks for the encouragement we open tonight!

  • @bwaybaby1991 I am totally disillusioned now. ;-)

  • @BwayDreamer1128 yes, pay attention when she left behind the set and when she comes back it's the double while she's changing for the last song...

  • I love that Kristen Chenoweth did her operetic part when she did the revival, but now that i see this clip i love Barbra Harris' bawdy approach, it's so hilarious. This is awesome.

  • @jleon1985 I really LOVE Kristin, but she's got nothing on this. This is AMAZINGLY HILARIOUS!!! I love this version!!

  • why aren't more audience people cracking up?! i'm dying over here!

  • barbara is absolutly hilarious in this!!! she is one of the best comediannes

  • Thank you so much for posting this! Barbara Harris is a true legend, although a lot of people have never heard of her. She was part of the group that founded what became Second City, went on to become the toast of Broadway, and earned a place in cinema history with her performance in Nashville. So talented and truly terrific!

  • I think college humor should spoof this :P (Hey they did West Side Story :P)

  • BARBARA. HARRIS. IS. BRILLIANT. PERIOD.

  • you can't hate on barbara because she originated the role.

it'd be like saying kristin sucked as galinda even though she created the role and gave the other actresses after her the direction the role should take.

i do, however, like kristin better in the apple tree. BUT, barbara was amazing because without her kristin wouldn't have had portrayed the role as well as she did.

  • Tragically ... Harris did leave Broadway to become a moo-who-who-who-hoovie star ... and did some lovely work (Seduction of Joe Tynan), but never quite reached stardom. (Barbra Streisand left Broadway at the same time but she had more ... what? individuality?) (There are rumors BH drank.) Well, it's sad, because she too was individual and brilliant, and she should have stayed on Broadway.

  • thank you so much for posting! The link I had had been taken down, would have been such a shame to lose such a brilliant resource. Truly great performance. XX

  • why is the high note lipsynched?

  • @RaWrZzZz high note was purposely lipsynched for comedy - to mock the "plastic show biz world" act three of THE APPLE TREE is about :)

  • @BabyDillGerkin i assumed xD but, i'm personally a soprano, so i can't help but love my high notes <3

  • that is so adorable....

  • hahahah soooo cuuutteee!

  • I actually like Kristin's version better, I think it's cuter and sexier. But this is great because she originated with her own perfect style!

  • @sugarhoneyicedtea123 I think they're two VERY different interpretations. Barbara's seems to be more dramatic and brassy, while Kristin plays Ella very earnest and as a dreamer.

I prefer Kristin's as well, but I'm judging upon seeing three different performances of hers but only this clip + audio of Barbara Harris (whom I LOVE in 'Joe Tynan' - so freaking good!).

  • @pestsprayed yes I know but Kristen sings amazingly and made it different I though a tony nom

  • This is great...

  • A-freakin'-dorable!...oh my gosh hahaha

  • omg she is so cute!

  • This is one of my favorite clips. Barbara Harris is brilliant. Thanks for posting.
