answers to faq: "Sure, the tuning here is regular banjo G tuning, gDGBD, but tuned down to dADF#A. If you're trying to work out a slide version, you should listen to the original Peg Leg Howell recording, which is a slide guitar piece played in open D tuning." "Real gut, except I think the bass string is a wound nylon."
i've been enjoying this video for a couple years now Chris and I'm long overdue in thanking you for your wonderful arrangement, great voice, and absolutely beautiful minstrel banjo!
Looks like a fine Jim Dandy five string now that's fantastic. Great job gonna keep my eyes out for more and plan to sample all of them. Gonna search for your cake walk now. You keep on keeping on.
this has always been 1 of my favorite songs/recordings --
but hearing peg leg howell as a banjo tune hadn't revealed itself to me until this ----- its incredible & perfect --- its amazing that you heard it this way ... youve got vision & soul ....
Fabulous tune: I love the Peg Leg original, but your version stands up to it, does it justice. I love your rhythm, the delicious slides, and your unpretentious singing style. Hats off!

nice interpretation of this tune, one of peg leg howell's best. in parts it reminds me of virgil anderson's version of wild bill jones. awsome job brother, you'v tapped into what makes this music cool in the first place which is more than i can say of the majority of people who try to play old time music. awsome
It's a modern replica of a homemade Civil War-era instrument and the wide bit is just decorative -- there's brass inlay on it that's hard to see in this video.
Well of course I come from London so I know about blues, being nearly 58 and that. Lovely to hear the words to Skin Game Blues so clearly elucidated. The banjo makes sense too. Also.....it's reassuring to know that there are other folks out there who realise Peg Leg Howell was one of the greats.
"Peg Leg Howell was one of the greats." Amen. And the list of Georgia guitarists who were at least five years older than Riley Puckett and were recorded is _short_. (Barnes Howell 1917 draft card: 3/5/88, unemployed, married, medium height and build, right limb off above knee, could sign his name. George Riley Puckett: 5/7/94, unemployed musician, closest relative his mother, medium height and build, totally blind, couldn't sign his name.)
It was built by Bob Flesher, who lives in Moreno Valley, CA, in 2005 -- it's strung with gut strings. You can see pictures of the same model banjo at his website (just Google his name -- it won't let me post a link here) -- it's the "Dandy Jim" model.
I'm familiar with the Yahoo record 'My Rough and Rowdy Ways' and it was a real treat to see this song brought to the present with this very nice rendition. Really enjoyable, go double C!
i cant stop listening to this beautiful tune.. thank you for the wonderful trip =)

I was surprised by how soft and lyrical you managed to make a banjo sound. This is very different from Peg Leg Howell, but is also very beautiful.

Great playing and interpretation of a magical song.
Inspiring me to revisit some of this old music.
Great seeing a mix of old timey and blues.
Poor old Peg Leg, he ended up losing both legs.
There was a rediscovered recording made of him
back in late 60's.
