  • great vid...your real good guy

  • I really like it!!

    Nice Banjo!

    Greetings from France

  • BRAVISSIMO!!!

  • If you changed anything about the way you play this it could not get any better. I have listened to it about 100 times and I'm still in awe.

  • I dont know how I missed this ,, Just great ,, All the best , Guy

  • wow! beautiful instrument, beautiful song!

  • i've been enjoying this video for a couple years now Chris and I'm long overdue in thanking you for your wonderful arrangement, great voice, and absolutely beautiful minstrel banjo!

  • I was surprised by how soft and lyrical you managed to make a banjo sound. This is very different from Peg Leg Howell, but is also very beautiful.

  • Yeah this is good..

  • Very nice.

  • nice one cheers m8

  • Looks like a fine Jim Dandy five string now that's fantastic. Great job gonna keep my eyes out for more and plan to sample all of them. Gonna search for your cake walk now. You keep on keeping on.

  • Simply awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow. I've never left a post on youtube before. This is just awesome!...Great job man.

  • this has always been 1 of my favorite songs/recordings --

but hearing peg leg howell as a banjo tune hadn't revealed itself to me until this ----- its incredible & perfect --- its amazing that you heard it this way ... youve got vision & soul ....

    L.

  • There's more info on tuning, etc., further down the comments. The banjo has gut strings on it.

  • Thank you. Just...thank you

  • Great job! Question: is anyone else singing with you in the video? Someone here thinks they hear a second voice.

  • Nope, just me.

  • That's an awesome banjo, by the way. Did you make it? If not, where did you get it?

  • If you read the rest of the comments, you'll find that info.

  • That banjo has a wonderful sound. So cool

  • Finger pickin may be more popular, but clawhammer will always have more soul. Great, keep on hammerin!

  • that banjo is sick

  • this is totally awesome! a+, two days and ill be singin it back to you haha

  • Wow! This is ace!

  • I love it. Are you playing in open C?

  • all i will say is 5 stars to you

  • Fabulous tune: I love the Peg Leg original, but your version stands up to it, does it justice. I love your rhythm, the delicious slides, and your unpretentious singing style. Hats off!

  • very best

  • You have your own style. This is on my fav's.

  • Awesome man!!! Thats a cool looking banjo too!!

  • Sure, the tuning here is regular banjo G tuning, gDGBD, but tuned down to dADF#A. If you're trying to work out a slide version, you should listen to the original Peg Leg Howell recording, which is a slide guitar piece played in open D tuning.

  • love it. Im a big Peg leg Howell fan. I want you to do Turtle Dove Blues on guitar next.

  • dude, awesome playing and singing, beautiful instrument too, great job man.

  • Very good, thanks !

    Val ;-)

  • Nicely done, Chris! Are those gut or nylgut, or nylon, or what?

  • Real gut, except I think the bass string is a wound nylon.

  • Wow, that was unreal man, nice job.

  • that is a cool banjo i love it and great sound too

  • Great job bro!

  • nice interpretation of this tune, one of peg leg howell's best. in parts it reminds me of virgil anderson's version of wild bill jones. awsome job brother, you'v tapped into what makes this music cool in the first place which is more than i can say of the majority of people who try to play old time music. awsome

  • Fantastic.

  • Well done¡¡¡ I like the way you sing, and I also like the Banjo a lot...

  • very soulful. You are great. I love your playing and your singing is right on.

  • u are raw, put up some more vids

  • Thanks Chris. That is a neat instrument.

  • Hey Chris

That's really nice. How come your banjo neck is like that .I've never seen one like that. Thanks!

  • It's a modern replica of a homemade Civil War-era instrument and the wide bit is just decorative -- there's brass inlay on it that's hard to see in this video.

  • beautiful from musician to musician!

  • that banjo has a wonderful sound to it. the playing wasn't too shabby either of course.

  • sounds great play some more

  • wow, great singin n pickin!

  • Beautiful sound I play this video several times a week great stuff Chris. Thanks.

  • I always loved that song! You do it great justice! The banjo is totally appropriate here, love it!!

  • Well of course I come from London so I know about blues, being nearly 58 and that. Lovely to hear the words to Skin Game Blues so clearly elucidated. The banjo makes sense too. Also.....it's reassuring to know that there are other folks out there who realise Peg Leg Howell was one of the greats.

  • "Peg Leg Howell was one of the greats." Amen. And the list of Georgia guitarists who were at least five years older than Riley Puckett and were recorded is _short_. (Barnes Howell 1917 draft card: 3/5/88, unemployed, married, medium height and build, right limb off above knee, could sign his name. George Riley Puckett: 5/7/94, unemployed musician, closest relative his mother, medium height and build, totally blind, couldn't sign his name.)

  • that is the shit! thanks for posting your talent and showing us some old school banjo.

  • honestly sick bro

    tottaly gnar man

    nice song

    keep on goin man

  • Absolutely stunning - makes me want a minstrel fretless more. SUper playing and the voice aint that bad either!

    Stuart - Caithness, north Scotland

  • Very fine performance, Chris. Tell us a bit about your banjo. When was it built? What kind of strings are on it?

  • It was built by Bob Flesher, who lives in Moreno Valley, CA, in 2005 -- it's strung with gut strings. You can see pictures of the same model banjo at his website (just Google his name -- it won't let me post a link here) -- it's the "Dandy Jim" model.

  • Fabulous sounds. Thanks!

  • Great banjo player and a good singer too.

  • I'm familiar with the Yahoo record 'My Rough and Rowdy Ways' and it was a real treat to see this song brought to the present with this very nice rendition. Really enjoyable, go double C!

  • Great playing and interpretation of a magical song.

Inspiring me to revisit some of this old music.

Great seeing a mix of old timey and blues.

Poor old Peg Leg, he ended up losing both legs.

There was a rediscovered recording made of him

    back in late 60's.

  • I love that!

    Thank YOU-Grazie-Merci.

  • Chris, this is fantastic! As is your recording of "Mixed Blues" -- heck, all your stuff is great!

  • Splendid! Do you perform at, say, festivals and such? I really enjoy your fine authentic oldtime playing and singing.

  • man, you sound like you just recorded for harry smith. great job...i'm impressed!

  • that was great! thankyou

  • Wow! Nice job! That banjo really gets the bass notes.
