  • I have to say, your videos have inspired me to take up retro gaming. I since bought a super nintendo and just bought zombies ate my neighbors and demon's crest. I also have a strong affinity for capcom and well, thanks HVGN. Not every game has to have HD graphics to be considered amazing

  • I noticed that the Game Over screen was with purple blood. I've always had the Genesis version, and it has red blood. Sega does what Ninten-don't.

  • Herc's Adventures!! Thank you thank you thank you!! I've always wanted to know the name of this game!! I used to play it all the time when I was a child with my little brother, and sometimes with my father, but I never really knew the name of the game until now, so thank you!!

  • I like this guy. He pays tribute to James but also does his own spin. Unlike the irate gamer who brazenly copies avgn and pretends like he is unique

  • I just realized that I've only made it to the pyramid. . . so I'm still in the "training" levels.

  • i still think this is one of the best coop games if done right .. and i still have a working copy of it for the genesis <3

  • I have a lot of good memories with Zombies Ate My Neighbors. It was one of the best stand alone Genesis games I ever played. Yes it's pretty hard yet I still enjoy remembering my child hood. I got far enough to a little past the first giant baby boss. Without question one of Konami's best soundtracks ever made. This game did what Dead Rising series is doing now. Both are comedy horror games parodies some classics. Derek thank you so much for reviewing such a great game.

  • What are you stoopid?

  • @TheNintendo101 No but apparently you're because you can't even spell stupid right.

  • I love that Game, it's is really awsome, i just remember when i played it when i was a kid...

Not comparing but, even if a hate hapiness and i prefer the anger, i like the way he reviewed the game. Good video.

  • His optimism is annoying. Yet refreshing.

  • I actually laughed at all the jokes you read at the end. I'm not sure if it was how bad they were or your ridiculous faces, but something made it hilarious.

  • All time classic game. My brother and I used to beat this game repeatedly but we would play straight through, never using a password. And Hercs adventures is one of my all time favorites. You should check it out, it's nonstop fun.

  • I fuckin loved this game when I was a kid... correction little kid.

  • boo to nintendo europe for ruining the uk release ( they changed the name made the graphics terreble and worst of alll half the enemies and items are missing!)

  • I used game genie to beat it. Im was even playing oh no zombies ate my neighbors hack and continued today and cant get past the next level now because i lost all my items on level 25

  • I"ve beaten this game but it WAS quite nail biting. I found the co-op makes it difficult but that probably is attributed to my bad partner. The soundtrack to this was amazing. I really did feel the story and game through it. One of the more memorable soundtracks. And while the gameplay is repetitive, let's be honest. What game ISN'T, to some extent, repetitive. COD, Halo, Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Assasin Creed...they're all repetitive gameplay. But that doesn't make them BAD. Overall, a great game!

  • Ah, this brings back memories.. This is one of my favorite games. Beating the game from start to finish in one sitting shouldn't take more than 4 hours, IIRC, although it's possible to beat it with little to no problems starting as late as level 40.

I played the EU MegaDrive (Genesis) version, here it was just called Zombies and it had a different coverart. I played the SNES version on an emulator and while i give it the advantage in graphics, the MD version has sharper music and FX.

  • Fuck, those jokes at the end were meant to be unfunny, but i laughed like a fucking maniac

  • 8:48 Thanks a lot, Derek. Now my shirt is covered in coffee.

  • Now those jokes are scary.

  • This game is amazing. Truly the game that molded my childhood. The soundtrack is unforgettable as is the game play. To be honest, I pulled my Sega Genesis out of my closet a few months back and managed to get to the last level. However, I don't think I beat it. This game is very difficult but that doesn't stop me from playing. They need a revamp of this but with classic feature such as the top-down gameplay and the original levels redone with better graphics.

  • I love this game

  • im so glad there are people like you that give credit the ones that inspired you to make the video instead of being a hack. you hear me ig?

  • @TheKosuko213 irate isnt really a hack but he had his inspiration from avgn and did borrow from him in the first couple of videos but now he is his own show he doesnt rip of/borrow from the avgn anymore so just remember that plus he does release videos faster than avgn their short but entertaing so even though yer an avgn fan doesnt mean u hav to bring irate gamer down and to be honest i kind of ripped off the irate gamer but thats all gonna change soon :D

  • Have you beaten ZAMN since Derek?

  • Why didn't the skeleton cross the road? It was rush hour and there was literally no room. What is a ghost's favorite type of footwear? It's different for every ghost, some don't even have feet. What do you call a monster missing an arm? Just a monster, it's rude to bring up somebody's physical abnormalities.

  • is it bad that i lauged really hard at those jokes?

  • hats off to anybody whos ever beat the best snes game ever made ZAMN i only got 2 level 22 with help and pass words FUCK THOSE SAND WORMS!!!!!!!

  • booya man rock on z.a.m.n. is awesome

  • DO MAXIMUM CARNAGE! please

  • @64yoyodude hey bro...

    wanna hear something crazy?

Spiderman and Venom: Maximum Carnage was made by LJN

    (yes, THAT LJN)

  • @Minority119 whos L.IN?

  • @64yoyodude watch AVGN's Xmen and Roger Rabbit reviews

LJN are basically the worst developers of the NES time, mostly because of their movie/shows licensed games

  • @Minority119 but anyway i love maximum carnage

  • @64yoyodude me too

    that's the "irony" of it

that such a great game were made by such a shitty company =P

  • @Minority119 LOL :)

  • @Minority119

Spiderman and Venom: Maximum Carnage was made by Software Creations.

LJN was the publisher. Not the developer.

Software Creations are amazing sound programmers. That game is worth it for the music alone.

  • haha everybady!

  • Love this fuckin game, I could never get passed the sandworm level though.

  • Why does everyone play the SNES version?! Play the genesis God damn it!

  • @KingOfClubz100 wow there's still genisis fan boys

  • @CraziGuns I ain't no fanboy. I only have Playstations and Gamecube. I just don't see why everyone reviews the SNES version.... until i saw the video. Still though.

  • your face when you said "dead ends" was fucking priceless xD great vid alltogether derek! i love these!

  • 00:35 GET MORE MONEY!

  • Man, this game was tough as shit, I don't think me and my brother ever beat it when we were little.

  • It was an awesome review but you forgot to talk about some of the references in the game, such as the name of the levels. It was so awesome when i found a reference to a movie or pop culture.

  • i beat this game back then over 9000 years ago and yes its really hard. you need to finish it in one go without the password bs

  • 17 dumbasses didn't get the jokes at the end.

  • @AfrojacX I'm sorry, the really subtle cultural references just didn't do it for me!

  • @Semudara XD

  • As someone who is not a video game nerd, I have to send out a screeching NERD ALERT, as I've made an appointment for getting my ZAMN tattoo.

This game has been engraved in my life since I was in kindergarten. My mom even loves it, haha!

...and how 'bout that rumored movie?

  • Derek, why don't u review a game with JAmes Rofle once? lol it would be AWESOME!!

  • Of course the Genesis version didn't sound as good with its 8-bit sound chip.

The scariest part was the horrendous puns at the end, heh.

  • A really good review for a really funny game! One addition: When you play coop, the first laugh is often right at the level introduction. Like: "EVEN MORE TERROR IN... LEVEL 14!" If you played the game, you'll know.

  • hey, he's not bad! better than the IG, but not AS good as AVGN, in my opinion. why not as good as AVGN? simple. no incredible 30-sec. cuss sequences, no shitting on games, no epic special effects, and no bugs bunny fights.

  • I'm surprised you didn't mention Monster Madness: Battle For Suburbia. The game wasn't necessarily "good" but I had some fond memories of this classic while plowing through it. The patch they released fixed a LOT of things in the game, and I wouldn't be opposed to trying again.

  • I beat this last Wednesday. I cried of happiness

  • Infact I had a conversation with IG about this game cuz i was so pissed that he said it sucked. He told me that he reviewed it because he thought it would be *funny* to review and it was bad because it was *hard*.

  • I dont think anyone can stand Irate Gamer who is here right now. I grew Up with Zombies ate my neighbors and that game was fucking amazing! it will hold a place in my heart the game play was so fluent and its no fucking pushover tell ya that much! that game can be so fucking hard

  • Got this game in VC last week. Got to the Underground Snake things and then died :(

  • I've beaten the game -:D...with passwords :(...MY passwords though :)

  • this game is like an old version of dead rising. you have to survive, save humans and experiment new weapons

  • People quit your pissing all over yourselves, I find him to be more infolrmative than angry, plus angry gets stupid after a bit. I have noticed this game is like Gauntlet for horror.

  • what a stupid irate gamer rip off

  • @applemetatin1 what a stupid comment

  • @applemetatin1 if your not a person with a chip in his brain, then your probably a cardboard cutout, either one i'll believe. YOur still a jackass.

  • My brother got to the last level and got game over :(

  • needs a ds remake with better hit detection, save, download play with your buddy, and touch screen weapon switch

  • @dragonnutds that's a good idea

  • @dragonnutds we can only dream D:

  • @dragonnutds

    3DS remake now!

  • @dragonnutds I say a Wii and 3DS Remake where you can play online in Co-Op or Competition. but Hey I can deal with either.

  • Water guns > Zombies.

    Period.

  • One bit of advice I have for anyone who plays this game: try to save the monster potions for any time you fight a giant baby.

  • nice

  • I think you are forgetting or may not know about an unreleased sequel called More Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the SNES and I believe Genesis. In fact, at gamereproductions(dot)com they sell a repro of a I believe a fan finished / touched-up copy of the game.

  • AVGN and HVGN should do a review together, you pick a game and HVGN points out the good things about the game while AVGN points out the bad things and goes apeshit

  • @kavieres That sir, would be epic.

  • @kavieres good idea

  • @kavieres

    Now THERE's an Idea! :)

  • @kavieres just had this dream myself

  • so what's that awesome music playing during the end credits? I can't get it outta my head!

  • your like AVGN but in a good way

  • hmmm.

This would be a perfect launch title for the 3DS.

please nintendo remake zombies ate my neighbors for the 3DS.

Another thing is that IG doesn't really say a whole lot about the game, you know REVIEW IT he just complains about a few things none of which are valid complaints.

  • I own this game! I bought a bag of SNES games for 3 dollars at a yard sale and this was in it and so was Zelda: Link to the past so I say I got a good deal and I never beat this game yet normally I just put it into my SNES just to listen to the awesome music!

  • HVGN is coppying Irate gamer, that mak dis teribl.......

  • @ST0PM0SS The irate gamer can't review. He once said that Super Mario Bros 2 was a good predecessor to super Mario bros and much more mistakes and he never said anything that the irate gamer said.

  • @mariojuggernaut22 I was just seeing if HVGN had any other fans rather than me, to make sure I'm not alone, and I also appriciate you spelling the words right, because not many people know how to spell on youtube.(not an insult)

  • @ST0PM0SS I watch the irate gamer, and to be honest there are many times i feel i couldnt agree with him, such as his review of aladdin and Zombies ate my neighbors, sure they're not big classics of their times but they are admiral games, He's like if AVGN(at a lesser level) fused with arnold's bad but lovable acting. AVGN came before IG and i hate to play favorites but is the better of the two. Also the HVGN actually talks positively of this game and not negatively, and is more agreeable.

  • Gotta love the "Inspired by" part. Least now all the fan boys won't call you a rip off, like anyone else who dares to review video games. lol

  • i like the jokes xD

  • JUST PLAYED AWESOME POSSUM, EVERYONE STAY AWAY BAD MUSIC LAUGHABLE GRAPHICS, GENERIC AND STICKY CONTROLS AND AWFUL VOICE OVERS ITS SOOOOOO BAD

  • i reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaally hope hvgn and avgn do a crossover video

  • i wish he makes a review of "Blaster master" thats its 1 of my favorite NES games.

  • Believe it or not, I did beat this game. It took me 3 hours, and I had to save up alot of Monster potions to do it, but it was worth it.

  • you sir, i tip my hat off to you. you are the BEST possible outcome of a AVGN insperation. most are shit, filled with swearing and lame jokes, however you have truely good reviews. informative, entertaining, and funny, you really deserve the spotlight

  • "Inspired by James Rolfe" that sir, is class. Love both of you guys....and ZAMN ruled.

  • Whoa, 11 minutes? It's very rare i have the attention span to watch a Youtube video thats over ten minutes, and this felt very short.

Congrats, you have intrigued me. Time to emulator this.

  • To answer your question at 1:33

    The Dead Rising series.

  • @BronzeSoldat dead rising is not scary its just fun and awesome games but this game came out long ago before dead rising

  • @linkpwnsevery1 I know that's what I meant.

  • In the starting sequence.. with the hand with the sock on it... DUDE DO YOU HAVE MICK FOLEY BEHIND YOUR SOFA?!?!?!? ;D

  • its posible to beat the last level with pasword

  • wait why does HVGN have to "admit" hes a clone? It should be common sense to say "Oh this guy wanted to do the opposite of AVGN and show us underrated classics, kewl!" but instead people call him clones and rip off

  • @oxe161 he admitted and got a sub from AVGN weird?!? but still I think he is good but still not funny like james and doesn't have any special effects :( sad.

  • Beating Zombies ate My Neighbors was one of my greatest accomplishments.

  • Got this for the VC and Its Beast

  • I beat this on the Genesis.

  • as long as IG reviews games I didn't know existed, like Jaws or Predator (NES) ill keep watching. Even though he is a cheap carbon copy of Rolfe. I just love games and dont give a damn who is talking about them.

  • I beat this game like 3 times with no cheats or password all from the beginning is the only way you can do it atleast me cause i need all the items and keys and what not , this game its awesome i love it.

  • great review man ur videos are great

  • God dammit, the irate gamer's video is the featured video for this video D:

  • Absolutely awesome!

  • ur show is pretty awsome man, i like the fact that u do reveiw good quality titles that we have played in our youth

  • this game was so sick when i was a kid, love the show , i subscribed , im a fan of the avgn but i like your formula, the whine is quite a classy touch......funny, get used to my name ill be whatchin your shows brother

  • "What is a vampire's favorite holiday? FANGS-giving! Oh this is gold material!"

    LOL'ED SO HARD

  • xylobone would have been better for the skeleton joke in my opinion

  • i beat it but with cheats:(

  • Remembered the Irate Gamer looked down on this game. This game is fantastic.

  • this game was MY LIFE when i was a child.

btw, it is possible to beat the game with the last password. the only thing is that you have to save all the three or for monster potions the game give you for the final boss.

also, YOU NEVER USE THE CROSSES ON THE GIANT WORM!!!!!!!! NOR ON THE WEREWOLVES!!!!! these are for the vamps... JEEZ... i sorry but seeing him splurging his weapons is distressing.

  • omg i remember this game it so much fun

  • "If you are among the few who have beaten Zombies Ate My Neighbors without save states or game genie." I'm looking at you Irate Gamer!

  • Awesome fucking video!

Zombies Ate my Neighbors is a game I played, like, once back in the 90s, and it was pretty cool. But HELL HARD.

As Derek pointed, the flaws in this game weren't the concept, the concept was awesome: a lot of different enemies, weapons, overhead adventure, deep strategy and victim saving. The flaws were just the design, like the weapon inventory browsing and the awkward hit detection.

Overall I agree with Derek, it was great!

The bad puns in the end were awesome too XD

  • I have actually played the game all the way through (technically it was the genesis version though), and it was as hard as hell not to get game over, and took me about a million tries

  • I WANT AN SNES

  • what i like about him is he gives CRDIT to james

  • I can't help but notice that you've got a copy of ZOMBIE (1979) on that shelf. Could it be that the HVGN is an aficionado of Italian splatter? Do a review! I know they're not games, but films like that are usually considered trash by the average moviegoer. PROVE 'EM WRONG!

  • Can't spell this link without "hotz."

  • i do have to agree with the Irate Gamer on why its called "Zombies ate my neighbors"

  • The Irate game rblatently rips off AVGN and other reviewers.

Even the sound of his voice annoys me.

  • @greenfactio Dude, let it go.

  • So, ZAMN is sort of like a combination of every horror-comedy movie, turned into a game?

  • those jokes at the end were pure gold

  • HVGN is cooler than IG because he admits he's a clone, which gives him more charm, plus he's like an alternate version of James, like when he reviewed Castlevania IV, while IG is basically just a second tier version of ANGRY James.

  • @D4MVP Can we PLEASE change the subject? This is an HVGN video!

  • @Bittergamer1886

Kind've hard to escape the comparisons when you share 3 of the 4 words of the show you're being compared to.

  • @D4MVP What? What 3 of the 4 words am I?

  • @D4MVP

Yeah, James Rolfe is like the enraged side of the nerd, and Derek is like the happy side. c:

  • @SethTheArcticFox92 Then what's the other 2?

  • @D4MVP

Personally I would disagree with a little of what you said.

He STARTED as a clone. But watching his more recent reviews I just see very little similarities anymore.

  • @D4MVP exactly! unlike people like, gamedude who admits hes a clone, but is a bad clone, and ig who does NOT admit hes a clone, and gives unfunny jokes and false info, HVGN is awesome! hes avgn switched backwards

  • @D4MVP

Why every1 thinks inspired = clone????????????? His style is totally different, he just got idea from avgn...

Same If I see Pamela Andersson it inspires me to jerk off.... (Well that was shiz, but still!)

  • @jokujunahi Agreed. The only two things they have in common is that they have similar character names (for obvious reasons) and they both drink something during the reviews. Even the games these two are reviewing are completely different, and HVGN doesn't do any of the shit-humor either but instead consentrates on the most important matter at hand: the games themselves.

These two are completely different, even if one was inspired by the other.

  • @D4MVP

    Preach On!

  • @D4MVP Not only is he really humble to James, but he ISN'T, really, a clone, a rip-off, etc. Rather, he was inspired by James, and through that inspiration, came up with his own, original, alternative idea, and he made it work really well, IMO. James reviews horrible games, Derek reviews underrated, classic games. Two different, albeit similar, things, like a shotgun and an assault rifle.

IG, a second tier version of James? That is *EXTREMELY* generous.

  • @censorethemoon he might not be a rip off, but he's still fuckin gay lOL

  • @censorethemoon The guy has some great reviews, but having a name like HVGN, even if it's meant as a homage, cheapens his work. Why not go with something original, iyf be much better

  • @censorethemoon No, that's his opinion. I love the HVGN, and I think that IG is also a worthy competitor in the classic game reviewing community. Why can't we just all agree to disagree, and leave each other alone? It is just stupid to bitch over something so trivial.

  • you have got to be high on something to be able to be this happy. hahaha

  • id love to see avgns reaction to 7:51

  • Me want more stupid jokes!!!!!!

  • blhr

  • whats Paris Hilton favorite instrument? the tromBONER!!

  • @NicksComments oh so true

  • Irate Gamer can suck my dick. This game is pure awesome!!

  • VERY LOGICAL QUESTION,

is there a save option with the wii, for the virtual console thingy. quite honestly id prefer the big ass password if it meant i could keep my stuff

  • yeah hvgn love this guy loved the splatterhouse reviews ah the memories thank you

  • i love this game, but to be honest, i was never able to beat it as a kid

  • I hated this when it came out and I still do.

You wandered around, you picked up Items you didn't knew about, you did some stuff and all of a sudden you finish the stage and get the worst feeling for players, that metallic tasete in your tonge and aching insecurity at the back of your head you didn't pick up or did 1/2 the things you could.

Didn't like the view either chars were too long and walls and overall scenarios hight were twisted and impossible yet Batman had it prefect in 1986 already.

  • Here is an example: you have your radar or whatever that thing is telling you to go somwhere you get there and there is a wall, you know that if the isometric view wasn't so poorly done and walls so high you woudn't feel you are stucked to the wall and can't go any further even when there's still obvious space in front of you.

Then you could figure out what to do but because of three tiny pixels you can't.

  • In Batman you can see only one screen but if you take a mentalpicture of every screen and build a map of it you can match them perfecly.

And the the hit dettection flaw wouldn't be much of a problem but it really is a major flaw on isometric view. Tressure Master its hard but since its a SideScroller, you can duck.

Finally the unability to save items brings my frustration to boiling point, making Haunting from EA my favoirte 16bit era halloween tradition, maybe a bit simplistic yet awesome.

  • You know a part of me based on all the reviews I hear and read about this game just make me want to try it a little. I always thought the game seems silly and wouldn't have much substance too used to seeing it in the bargain bin. Oh well good review tho, when will the Bucky O'hare review come out?

  • Great review and much better than Irate Gamer's review... I enjoyed this game (used save states to beat it) but HOLY CROW was it a challenge.

  • the avgn would be happy to see passwords with only four characters...

    good review : )

  • the music on the game is on eddsworld have a look

  • FUCK THE IRATE GAMER THIS GAME KICKS ASS!!!!

  • Dude , imagine if MST3K did a like let's play of ZAMN, THAT would be fucking awesome XD

  • wow the happy video game nerd.......................i never thought i'd see the day when the nicer clone of the AVGN came

  • I was a rather epic little gamer, and made it quite far into ZAMN, but I realized the grim truth of it being impossible to beat unless you do it from the beginning as well. And that really pissed me off after several bazillion valiant tries, so I grew to loathe this game. At the same time, I loved it, and just really wish it were more beatable. :)

  • @clearmute you can beat it with every password, I'll give you you need a lot of knowledge of the game to do that, but if that's a goal of yours getting the knowledge may prove easy enough if you got the patience. When I was little my brother and I beat it with the lvl 41 password, we decided that was a good password and played and played until we had memorized what to do, if we had enough health to continue, or we should reset, etc.

  • I won't lie - I thought 16 bit games were too hard.

  • I got all the way to the fucking spider and couldn't kiss his ass.

  • Epic Win

Hated the Irate Gamer's review of this game, it only shows he sucks at games with some dificulty (Which really are usually the best games).

This game was one of my favorite games back on basic school and junior high, if I make a personal list of the top 20 to 50 games of all time this would still be among the best.

BTW... It is Hard as Hell to beat the eye popping head of Dr. Tongue, but I did pwned this game with my bro with no save states and the credit's extra level is well worth it.

  • wow the happy video game nerd? XD

  • Ahhh, this game WAS my childhood.

  • Loved the review, hated the jokes. Now if you'll excuse me, the jokes are burned into my brain and I must kill myself.

  • Halloween tradition? Why limit it? It's an awesome game, any time of the year.
