I think most of you are missing the point, from the way I understood this song it was never about a relationship at all but as a distaste with religion, in concert the back up lyric is screamed as "hey God" when the keyboard hits two strong beats. It is a much deeper song than just being about a failed relationship and more about a conflict of mans fascination with religion. His early songs had a twist with religion and its ironic nature.
