"Bad" activities on the Internet (whatever you may consider immoral, it's different for everyone of course) are like drugs. They're impossible to prevent, and always will be a part of our civilization.
They want an excuse to regulate the internet so they can censor views they disagree with. This is an attack on the first amendment, and freedom of speech on the net.
We have to defend this freedom at all costs. Without it, all our other liberties will fall.
Here comes socialism. Both the D's and the R's are sending us that way.
The censorship the FCC engages in is really wrong.
And the FCC gets corrupted by the big broadcasters it tries to regulate. This makes it harder for small broadcasters and this helps the big ones be semi-monopolistic.
The Internet has a private, non-profit regulating org. The broadcast spectrum should adopt that model instead. There is nothing the FCC does that could not be done better by private orgs.
@Quindal Well- sadly- what YOU will accomplish- with the request of [quote] legislate security thresholds for companies which have ecommerce [unquote]
Will be to WIPE the nearly 85% of SME Companies completely OUT of existance
(as)
The 85% percentile of Businesses- are in fact (SMALL) ONE MAN BANDS- or maybe a 2 person partnership (SME's) with the smallest of financial resources & are already struggling to meet huge "LEGISLATED RED TAPE" as it is; wthout thicko's suggesting MORE EXPENSIVE.!
@QUIX4U 99% of all statistical data spoken of online is pulled from one's butt. If you want to use "85% percentile" you'll have to cite your source.
On to the point of discussion
legislating that companies which engage in eCommerce must take personal protective measures to ensure the privacy and certifiably secure transmissions of sensitive information regarding their customers is hardly going to put anyone out of business, to suggest this is asinine, and having read your comments seems accurate
At least it got YOU to get Ur grey matter going too..
But .. never mind whether it's 85&% 99% .. or just airy fairie nothing %
ALL things .. will always have a negative impact (as well as a positive impact) .. thus ? it's NOT what I said 9nor what U said) ..it's what we didn't say -- that really matters.
@QUIX4U I sincerely hope you are not the spokesperson for the liberal regressive movement. If you are the pinnacle of intelligence and the front-runner of their intellectual gene pool then the Republicans have nothing to fear from the degenocrats.
@Quindal hahahahahaha ? U just as OBVIOUSLY - do not ever "think" either - before opening YOUR OWN MIND .. and dumping assumations where none exist. Just google my username. AND ? That will explain... Why I absolutely have NO PHARKIN IDEA.. As to what you refer to: I don't givashyte - about Ur silly AMERICAN politicians (READ THAT AS( POLY (many) TIC (nasty littel bloodsuckers) & Ians (Short for scalp taking & other stuff) Ians Be they simply "IAN" - 's Or just - Indy Ian's
I love the phase at 3:50 "protecting privacy". The government reads and monitors ALL of your internet activity now!!! So how could a sane man refer to as privacy?
o Israel has killed Americans (eg. Sailors on USS Liberty, Rachel Corrie, etc...)
o Israel spies on this country (eg. Pollard, Kadish, AIPAC, etc...)
o Israel bought our politicians with our taxes.
o Israel steals our taxes, hence their higher income.
o Israel uses our country as their toilet.

If the gov is worried about internet security as far as network security for sensitive networks, here's an idea: stop spending billions in iraq and start hiring real hackers. When I tried to apply to the air force to join the cyber force, before I could even get to my security knowledge, I was denied because I smoked weed in high school and openly admitted it.
The governments role in society is to take as much of your liberty as possible with out violence by the People.
How else is social fascism to grow? You cannot have free speech and fascism at the same time. Why do you think you need permission to protest, and have to do so in a cage with barbwire (for your own protection of course) in what is now referred to as a "free speech zone"
Net neutrality. Newspaper, radio, tv. It's all about control of information. They are going to turn internet into something like t.v. the website you will be able to go to will be like a licensed website. So Sad, "protection of security" these people aren't making any sense, at all.
The federal government is completely out of control. I have always known that it was only a matter of time before the government would come in and "regulate" the free exchange of information among its citizens.
The Internets will be destroyed as you know it.
For it is not possible for a socialist fascist state to survive in a vibrate and free exchange of information on such a large scale.
Well lets see...Obama took over the Financial sector. He's now in charge of the largest auto maker. He wants to control Health Care. He plans on controlling the energy sector and now we have Internet Czar. And you people were upset Bush was violating your rights and freedom!
NO NO NO! KEEP THE INTERNET FREE! NO LAW ON THE INTERNET! WE WILL NOT ALLOW IT! NO CENSORSHIP ON THE NET!
if u try it we will defeat u. the internet is the only truly free place on our planet. u can do whatever u want. be whoever u want. do we want to get that up? maybe im crazie, but i dont trust easily. i dont think any of u should either.
Hey, government... uhm, why don't you set up a network that isn't hooked up to the world-wide web to protect these department secrets? You know, run a few lines that you guys can use so you don't have to fret about hackers, etc. Just a thought. Of course, you've made it perfectly clear that all you care about is destroying liberty, taking advantage of innocent people to fuel your megalomaniacal world slavery agenda. Good luck. You're going to need it on this one.
They're all nervous all the time too. If I was going to take control over humanity I would put on a much better poker face about it. I guess that's why there is the propaganda wing too..
IF you fucking politicians take away any freedoms of the internet I am moving to Spain, and taking as many people with me. So much shit. I f'in hate you guys, Really. I really do. I hate you I hate you I hate you. Congress, the prez, and the fucking senate and all these people in this fucking video. FUCK You guys. Go home and lick your pussies bitches. Your worthless and its not going to change. LEAVE US THE FUCK ALONE!
vague vague and more vague. Can you be more vague?. Make is more secure? How? how? how?
By throwing a bunch of "Departments of w/e" at the Internet's to just go. "what should we do, Well We are being paid for something lets just do this" Fucking idiots. Complete idiots.
Just promote websites that check website security. There is many websites out there that check websites for fraud. Promote, Teach about fraud. Much more economical then Creating laws that can be abused. ... Fucking politicians.
You have to wonder how Napolitano is still part of our government. Oh that's right, Barry Sotoro is president(or is he? where is your birth certificate Barry?). The federal government does not have the authority to curb free speech. Deal with it ya control freaks. We are done fighting your corporate wars. Globalism has failed. America is on to you.
For all the talk about the Democrats being the "party of the little guy," they sure have tight working relationships with megacorps (GM/Chrysler, the 19 "too big to fail" bankstas they gave 12 TRILLION of the people's money to).
And GE scored a "public-private partnership" (aka fascism) agreement w/ the fedgov. to create a computerized database of our most private medical records to hand over to Obamacare's Fed Health Board.
The nature of government is that we trade some liberty for some security. Note two words in Franklin's quote - "essential" and "temporary" - Franklin was talking about bad trades. There are always *some* trades between liberty and safety, and even a certain trade between injustice and safety. Occsasionally courts make mistakes, and even by having police we lose some liberty. It is often worth it - that's the nature of trade-offs.
Please don't make me laugh this people don' not really know about Security, the have employees that cant maybe knows about security but this people don't know the real underground of Hacking and Cracking that is way the reason ho some one hack with a SQL injection attack the Army Server's hehe they even could have and maintain security in those Servers, do you really think they can admin in the Cyber War Zone nah!!! i don't believe that, and remember there is always someone who knows more than u
Ah yes. Let me guess. There'll be a money-sinking budget strangling "War On Cybercrime" much like the War On Poverty and War On Drugs. Yet another reason for me to never plan on retiring I suppose.
The one video made by this government I don't agree with. If people just learned how to use computers and the internet properly before they put all their information on it, their wouldn't be any problems
This was the most useless propaganda video I've ever seen. Normally, we are told what you want to happen and why it's good. Here, you tell us nothing but that there has to be cybersecurity and some stupid ecosystem where government, industry, academia, and the public play an equal role in keeping the medium safe. Well, I say that's all fine and dandy except for the government part. I think we'd all rather not have you meddling with the last bastion of true liberty and the free exchange of ideas.
Couldn't agree more. I've been an ardent supporter of this president, but if this strategy results in even a small decrease in online freedom, he will no longer have my support. Period.
This administration doesn't seem to realize that they are walking a VERY thin line with MANY interest groups which previously ardently supported it. All to further a freaking agenda...
We depend on the internet - we can't afford for it to become a lawless place subject to threats (give us money or you'll get a DDOS) and the like. A lawless freedom might seem appealing until you think about it a bit more.
You call in the government or law enforcment when blackmail like that happens-you do not take control of an entity that draws its strength from being owned and operated by private citizens to prevent that from happening. This is a blatant and disgusting attempt to expand government power to where it should never be. Ironically, this is a sort of pre-emptive strike on the internet to protect the people from internet terrorists. Is the DDOS the next WMD?
I don't think that it is a "takeover". From what I saw in this video Obama's administration, including others in government, are seeking to increase their role in policing the internet. That is indisputable.
Private citizenry is in control of the internet. Increasing and maintaining user traffic is the main goal of most websites because they depend on advertising.
Also, the uproar that Net Neutrality has caused convinces me that private users have more influence than corporations.
If and where it is necessary, I believe the internet needs policing. Extortion and other crimes are on the rise already, and vulnerability in the face of attacks is a concern.
I don't think we really should trust either the government or the big corporations on internet matters - a useful tension between the two is easier to steer towards our interests.
I think that an information campaign-how to keep your information and your website safe-would be far more appropriate than direct interference. I agree that hacking and ddos attacks are problems, but government should not be the ones to solve that problem. I think it is far better to be wary of government interference and not regret loss of liberties later.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Should government stop enforcing other laws and protecting society in other ways as well? Is government not the one to solve the problem of murder? kidnapping?
I don't see the difference - we all give up some liberties in order to live in a society, and we expect government to protect us from each other and help structure those interactions. How does the internet change that?
You can't murder someone over the internet. The internet is a forum of expression and should be treated as such. It is less comparable to, well, IRL, than a newspaper or even a private business.
I don't think that laws should /not/ be enforced on the internet. Obviously anti-child porn laws and hacking are punishible and should remain that way. I just don't think there is a need for even more government presence online.
It's true that you cannot perform the act of murder over the internet, but one can involve the internet in many serious crimes - ransom, extortion, blackmail, threats, attacks. As society moves to embrace the internet more, we both become more vulnerable and organised crime becomes more interested in using the net as a tool to help them with some parts of crimes. It is the government's job to protect society. I am nervous about it too, but saying "hands off" would be worse.
MacGhil, your comment is so well thought-out and raises the level of dialogue here. We're so lucky to have your carefully-considered words to enlighten us.
Monitoring a diet involves keeping a balance of the major food groups, intake and the type of intake.
Information as "food for thought" could also benefit from the ability to monitor our individual usage percentiles of types of information, voluntarily of course.
It seems a likely first step for self-education in the effects of information consumption.
wake up..... you want protection? Download an antivirus program. theres a bunch of them on cnet downloads for free. you want to pay high internet connection taxes & allow censoring then allow this crap to happen.
just another case of the gooberment trying to protect the idiots at the expense of the rest of us....... I cant wait to get rid of this guy in 4 years lets hope there's something left of America when he's done
Protecting your information from China, Russia and Others is a crime? And no, he isn't going to monitor your computer OR take away your freedoms, unless you are a computer hacker and would like to hack people. You get the gist now I hope.
KEEP YOUR FINGERS OFF OF OUR INTERNET!!! I would rather have the Chinese impair our internet for a few weeks during a cyber attack than to have the US Government regulate it forever.
Think about it. They want to control who we visit, who we dont... Dont asy "You can still visit websites with low bandwidth" but that wont happen... No more websites where you learn to hack, no more crack websites, no more strictly the single-man blogging/personal websites... Gaming websites, communities, ect... None of this will exist anymore... They wont let you view them at full speed, so communities will die... This control, is a Dictator solution.
To my knowledge hacking means braking into a computer and taking control of it or illegally downloading information from it, either way it is wrong and the learn to hack sites should be taken down. Gaming websites have to much financial pull so they will never be under attack.
you are way too paranoid and i think that you probably need help.
The Constitution's protection of the freedom of speech limits actions of the government that infringe upon that liberty. To believe that the focus of that defense need be enlarged into the private sector should be looked upon with a very high degree of incredulity and skepticism. There is threat that the government could infringe upon other things in doing this, such as the rights of property or the protection against the institution of a "digital fairness doctrine," just to name a few things.
from you know, you know, you know what I am talking about. You know?
I just hope that there are provisions in this cybersecurity bill that will prohibt government interferance with free speach. I can't help thinking about the 'fairness' doctorine being pushed to 'protect' talk radio.
I approve of more protection on the internet as long as I'm not being protected from other people's opinions, no matter how "dangerous" someone thinks they are.
well said. i think there are worse problems than internet censorship, for example they could sell your private information and intellectual property to private businesses...actually they are already doing it....very unethical!
a history of every website, phone call, text message, IM, email, fax, you name it is stored by the government in various places such as room 641a at AT&T's central office in San Francisco . Research Mark Klein room 641a and watch the MSNBC report on it. It's not only "what we buy". All information in processed by software, then info that is important to "National Security" is sent to humans to process and go through. Do your research.
I would hardly say that selling my private information is a worse problem then controlling the ONE social median that they currently dont have much control over.
For instance, you were able to right this comment.
What if one day you simply cant do something like that because its dubbed cyber terrorism, or falls into some idiotic category of things that could possibly happen, and there for blocked?
During this whole video all i heard was "blah blah blah cyber security blah blah blah." No answers, no solutions and not even the slightest hint of what they are thinking about doing. In order to gain my support they have to tell me what they're going to do first.
I think this is a preemptive video so fox news and the rest of the new industry doesn't go crazy thinking that the government is trying to take over the internet.
Impressive fear mongering; Good job preempting government intervention. "Collaboration" is another way government controls your choices; like banks, it is synonomous with corruption by allowing a few giant corporations special favors, because just like banking, pharmacy drugs, companies regulate their competition.

They want an excuse to regulate the internet so they can censor views they disagree with. This is an attack on the first amendment, and freedom of speech on the net.
We have to defend this freedom at all costs. Without it, all our other liberties will fall.
Here comes socialism. Both the D's and the R's are sending us that way.
freesk8 2 years ago
I guess that you really hate the FCC.
mcclurejas 2 years ago
Yeah, I do, actually.
And the FCC erodes the 1st amendment.

the last thing we need is one more person invading our privacy
if you want there to be safety, then educate the people and legislate security thresholds for companies which have ecommerce
Big-Brother cannot police the internet effectively, this is like the email promise of forwarding it and a picture flashes
The only thing that any of this cyber-"security" dictator will bring about is a constant and ongoing violation of your fourth amendment
Keep your "change" mr obama
we want freedom
Quindal 2 years ago 15
QUIX4U 11 months ago
@QUIX4U 99% of all statistical data spoken of online is pulled from one's butt. If you want to use "85% percentile" you'll have to cite your source.
On to the point of discussion
legislating that companies which engage in eCommerce must take personal protective measures to ensure the privacy and certifiably secure transmissions of sensitive information regarding their customers is hardly going to put anyone out of business, to suggest this is asinine, and having read your comments seems accurate
Quindal 11 months ago
@Quindal hahahaha - whatever..
At least it got YOU to get Ur grey matter going too..
But .. never mind whether it's 85&% 99% .. or just airy fairie nothing %

"A witty saying proves nothing" -- Voltaire
The nature of government is that we trade some liberty for some security. Note two words in Franklin's quote - "essential" and "temporary" - Franklin was talking about bad trades. There are always *some* trades between liberty and safety, and even a certain trade between injustice and safety. Occsasionally courts make mistakes, and even by having police we lose some liberty. It is often worth it - that's the nature of trade-offs.

We depend on the internet - we can't afford for it to become a lawless place subject to threats (give us money or you'll get a DDOS) and the like. A lawless freedom might seem appealing until you think about it a bit more.
pgunn01 2 years ago
You call in the government or law enforcment when blackmail like that happens-you do not take control of an entity that draws its strength from being owned and operated by private citizens to prevent that from happening. This is a blatant and disgusting attempt to expand government power to where it should never be. Ironically, this is a sort of pre-emptive strike on the internet to protect the people from internet terrorists. Is the DDOS the next WMD?
iheartskullz 2 years ago 2
What makes you think this is a takeover? Do you even understand what's being discussed in this video?
When you're talking about private citizens owning it, it's really more like giant corporations.
pgunn01 2 years ago
I don't think that it is a "takeover". From what I saw in this video Obama's administration, including others in government, are seeking to increase their role in policing the internet. That is indisputable.
Private citizenry is in control of the internet. Increasing and maintaining user traffic is the main goal of most websites because they depend on advertising.
Also, the uproar that Net Neutrality has caused convinces me that private users have more influence than corporations.
iheartskullz 2 years ago
If and where it is necessary, I believe the internet needs policing. Extortion and other crimes are on the rise already, and vulnerability in the face of attacks is a concern.
I don't think we really should trust either the government or the big corporations on internet matters - a useful tension between the two is easier to steer towards our interests.
pgunn01 2 years ago
I think that an information campaign-how to keep your information and your website safe-would be far more appropriate than direct interference. I agree that hacking and ddos attacks are problems, but government should not be the ones to solve that problem. I think it is far better to be wary of government interference and not regret loss of liberties later.
iheartskullz 2 years ago 4
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Should government stop enforcing other laws and protecting society in other ways as well? Is government not the one to solve the problem of murder? kidnapping?
I don't see the difference - we all give up some liberties in order to live in a society, and we expect government to protect us from each other and help structure those interactions. How does the internet change that?
pgunn01 2 years ago
You can't murder someone over the internet. The internet is a forum of expression and should be treated as such. It is less comparable to, well, IRL, than a newspaper or even a private business.
I don't think that laws should /not/ be enforced on the internet. Obviously anti-child porn laws and hacking are punishible and should remain that way. I just don't think there is a need for even more government presence online.
iheartskullz 2 years ago 3
It's true that you cannot perform the act of murder over the internet, but one can involve the internet in many serious crimes - ransom, extortion, blackmail, threats, attacks. As society moves to embrace the internet more, we both become more vulnerable and organised crime becomes more interested in using the net as a tool to help them with some parts of crimes. It is the government's job to protect society. I am nervous about it too, but saying "hands off" would be worse.
