In this scene the character of Col. Nathan R. Jessep, clearly demonstrates the naivety shared by all military people, regardless of flag,
They fail to appreciate that they validate the need for their existence and what they do based upon the deductive fallacy of et cetera, ad infinitum, ad nausam.
To put it simply they just don’t get that they are on their wall because they enemy is on the enemy’s wall and that the enemy is on the enemy’s wall because they are on their wall.
@nickmattedwards And you're naive to think the world would be safe if everyone got off his or her wall. Wake up and smell the shit covered world we live in. Also look up what "et cetera, ad infinitum, ad nausam" actually mean before you use them, because you used them incorrectly, most likely to make your own argument sound smarter.
Militarism is the physical manifestation of the externalisation of human ignorance, that internal enemy cannot be defeated on the external battlefield, we are fighting the wrong war.
great scene...now things have changed in the Marine Corp...remember how they kept pushing that recruit during PT? Now if a man is injured etc. they pull him out and send him to medical.
Yep. It is like a christian. They can't take the truth, for they have forgot, or know it not. For they are like lost sheep, and forgot the begining. For the USA is falling.
@nightfrog205 My senior house in college had an alley right next to it, and my bedroom window was on the third floor. One of my house mates lit of a bunch a m-80's in the alley one night without warning. The way that sound funneled up along the building walls and into my window I thought someone was shooting a semi auto, I hit the deck asap. I literally jumped to the floor, and then started laughing my ass off about 5 seconds later when I realized what it was.
People like you don't even understand that when we pulled out of Vietnam, when we did, millions of South Vietnamese and Hmong were rounded up, killed and put in concentration camps. The freedom that you enjoy, when you crowd the streets and chant " Hell no, we won't go," is something that people in many other countries couldn't even fathom. Although War protestors are nice people and have good intentions, their rallies do nothing to help the military.
@StonewallJackson26 Look at it from their perspective. The SV were allied with a foreign power who invaded and is trying to overthrow the current establishment. What do you think would happen if China comes the US and set up their pro China government, backed by half the country. China looses and goes home...what do you think the US would do ? I think they would be looked down upon and treated pretty badly. I think the side that one would be pissed off and rightfully so. Just saying.
@StonewallJackson26 I was a war protester, I have never although been "anti military". In fact, being for the mililtary means not sending them into useless wars like the ones we are still engaged. You see, I don't like to see my family and friends die over a lie, and if you still are silly enough to think that Bush told the truth about the Iraqi threat, then you need your head examined. Please don't use "Stonewall" as you code name, he would have been too smart to post what you posted.
@StonewallJackson26 If you honestly think that the world we live in can be sustained without intervening world wide then you need your head examined. Do you honestly think the US being in over 150 countries is not a big reason why we haven't seen a major War for the past 4 decades? In your perfect World, War would be non existent. But we don't live in your Utopia. War between humans has been around since ancient Mesopotamia. And 90% of every War we have been engaged in, we didn't start.

@jasonROXcarlySUX In the military it's an abso-fucking-lutely black and white rule that you NEVER, EVER smear a soldier of a higher rank than you, so there's the reason for that. Each actor at some point in time and space gets his five minutes of magical performance, in this case in that now-distant 1992, that moment went to Mr Jack Nicholson!
1:27-1:33 my favorite part....One thing I don't understand from the movie...Why Jessup set up 2 of his best marines to eliminate one Cinderella...If he marines are so inportant....
As a former marine myself this scene with jack nicholson as col jessup makes me proud to be a marine and even as col jessup was wrong in his decison for the code red that was given ( see full metal jacket for blanket party scene) he was soild as a col in the marine corps, that was a very real and powerful statement made , every marine I know got a hard on for col jessup for taking charge and carrying out the plan of the day .I want the truth You can't handle the truth. Semper Fi motherfuckers.
I like Jack Nicholson a lot, and I sincerely doubt that he sympathises with his character, in fact it’s his understanding of this individual that makes it so potent. Having read some remarks here, it only serves to remind me that we live in world full of simple people with simple outlooks; why do we have those walls and in whose interest is it to have them there? War=arms=money=power....wake up.
Damn, Jack's palpable high-voltage makes Cruise look like a firefly flash by comparison. Take away the usual movie props & M:I-style special FX & Cruise is defenseless against an authentic scenery-chewer like Nicholson.
@fjohnson747 hes done a lot of good movies without any sfx, this might not of been HIS acting movie but he certainly had his good scenes. Jack Nicholson was the best in this movie though.
Liberals always talk about rape and innocence when it comes to war. They seem to have no grasp of the concept of freedom. Men have given their lives in exchange for ours. Their blood is the currency paid for our freedom. They died so we can live...so shut the fuck up and enjoy your freedom you snot nosed little bastards. Say thank you and be on your way.
@OneRTZero Kaffee reflects the politically correct world that we live in where the pencil pushers know how to fight a war better than the front line troops do. I agree with Jessup's character too. In the words of Navy Cross recipient Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, "you do everything in your power to keep me from having to go to war, but once you realize there is no other option and send me, turn your back and close your eyes because I'm going to get the job done and it'll be ugly"
@mboomer93 No, I do too. I understand the importance of the words he speaks of. The kid dying was not intentional, even if the measures were harsh. This tradition goes back to the Spartans...........when it was much worse.
This is a thorough explanation of how the military operates.
"So, what we do things like rape women, kill innocent people, and get young men killed by terrorist for no reason? We are doing it to "protect" you! So shut the fuck up and don't question how we do it!"
politics ditates the right or wrong in every contrey but its up to the mlatery to implament them right or wrong they teach us to understand there disitions but its in everyone intrest to do the best they can in the disions they make this film is a parody of that.politicions have layd the foundations of these laws its the milatary that carry them out. you cant blame this guy for carrying out his orders right ore wrong
I'm on Jessep's side. He did what he thought would be the most effective, and in the best interest of everyone as a whole. Even though it was just a movie it makes me mad to think that politicians run wars instead of real men. If we fought WW2 like we've fought from Vietnam through today we would have failed something fierce!
Tom Cruise's acting, even in the 1990s, was the epitome of powerfully assured confidence and eighties cheese and excess. I am not going to take anything away from him though. He's not my favorite, but he was always a smooth performer.
Basque was spoken in all of Europe as a common language, because almost all the population of Europe had migrated from the Sahara when the formerly productive land became a desert .New cults from Anatolia, all of them promoted male domination. Priests were sent all over Europe with orders to destroy the ancient religion of the Goddess, create nations, and invent new languages for each new nation.Every language had to be based on the basque language because there was no other from which to work
IV – But Kaffee is doing his job, Jessup is hiding his guilt and cowardly trying to unload the crime on somebody else. Sympathies should go to Kaffee, who does his job well and nails the s.o.b. The film also gives evidence about the antagonism, acrimony and intolerance (“faggoty uniform”, “flash your badge”, “blow job”…) of the USMC towards the US Navy, of which (ha Ha HA!!!) they are however a part.
III – as the military (Navy) defense lawyer for the two defendants, a young upstart (maybe) in the practice of law, who eventually (and cleverly) sees through the pantomime put up by the pompous ass and makes him admitting shouting he ORDERED that murder. Nicholson is SUPERB in his part, much better than Cruise as the young upstart lawyer who, however, has the better on him. If we talk about the actors, Nicholson is better and more powerful; but Cruise is good, too. ./.
I – How about separating the actors, and keep them separated, from the roles they play, and stop the bickering? On one hand we have, here, Nicholson as Col. Nathan Jessup, commander of the USMC garrison in Guantanamo, in the hostile, communist Cuba: a strutting, arrogant, conceited peacock of a field officer who’s concerned only about keeping his position of COMMAND in his façade as a high-ranking officer. A superb actor, with many credits as such in many parts of different type. 485
agreed. Cruise has made a couple of movies that I've seen him shine in. 'A Few Good Men' and one that surprised me; "War of the Worlds". The movie was moved along only because Tom made his character worth watching. Otherwise, it would have been kinda weak. It's a shame that he's gone a bit silly.
@razor00281 He WAS a great actor, before this flick. These days the greatest actor I've seen is Daniel Day Lewis - watch him in Gangs of NY & There Will Be Blood if you don't believe me.
Jack Nicholson was so amazing in this movie. He's done many, of course, but this is one of his strongest. Including As Good As It Gets, The Bucket List, and One Flew over the CUckoo Nest.
Possibly one of the best soliloquies to come out of Hollywood. Politics, message, etc. be damned; this was just fantastic. Lt. Kaffe, honey, darling, light of my life, you didn't let me finish... I'm not going to hurt Santiago, I'm just going to bash his brains in! :)
Well Im gonna just say Thank you Jack and move on my way haha! Mean old bastard aint he haha great actor!! I think there was a lil bit of JOHNNY!! in this scene!

Gheorgyi 9 months ago
III – as the military (Navy) defense lawyer for the two defendants, a young upstart (maybe) in the practice of law, who eventually (and cleverly) sees through the pantomime put up by the pompous ass and makes him admitting shouting he ORDERED that murder. Nicholson is SUPERB in his part, much better than Cruise as the young upstart lawyer who, however, has the better on him. If we talk about the actors, Nicholson is better and more powerful; but Cruise is good, too. ./.
Gheorgyi 9 months ago
I – How about separating the actors, and keep them separated, from the roles they play, and stop the bickering? On one hand we have, here, Nicholson as Col. Nathan Jessup, commander of the USMC garrison in Guantanamo, in the hostile, communist Cuba: a strutting, arrogant, conceited peacock of a field officer who’s concerned only about keeping his position of COMMAND in his façade as a high-ranking officer. A superb actor, with many credits as such in many parts of different type. 485

Tom Cruise was a respectable actor before he went insane
Persian5life 9 months ago 2
@Persian5life
