it is obvious that he does play bass guitar, but i said it out of respect to him that he is more than just that. he's capable of composing music as a whole. he knows when to not over play bass guitar but rather keep overall feeling of music more important.
I was there! I see them... I was happy as a child when I hear that Hellborg came to the fair and then he make this crap with the silly violin guy... It was terrible..
Jonas is a humble wise man, who kindly replied to my fan letters and talked about music and arts in general and inspired me so much to follow my dream. He's nice man with humour. He's not a bass guitarist, but great music composer. For instance, Track "Shri Shri Vikkuji" from "Kali's Son" album is such a sophisticated and beautiful music with so much feeling. Love his work with Shawn Lane, Buckethead, John Lydon, Bernie Worrell, Jeff Sipe... (and the list goes on)Great musician, really is.
and they did one big completely on the spot improve
Lane Broke a string(both his Main and Backup guitar)Jonas and Michael Shrieve started jamming and then Lane got his guitar back and then joined them and for a 15 minute insane Jam i was amazed at how they just came together as if they has some sort of rehearsal or something but it was completely improvised
Umm, with Michael Shrieve. I'm gonna have to research bit on that. Bootlegs of year '96 are very popular year for hardcore fans. Live shows at Ziggy's, Atlanta, Wetland etc... but they were all with Jeff Sipe.
Shawn did gig in Feb at Delta University USA, but that one was with Barry Bays and Doug Scarborough. Don't know anything about live in Asia if it's so. Sure I will let you know if I find out. ;-)

And now he's pimping his signature line of amps and strings all over the place talking about the geeky engineering specs and "a more pure fundamental" and all that. We get it. You're obsessed with technique and the sound of your bass but it's like, dude, would you just play some friggin' music.

Good God. Every Hellborg video on here is just pure wankery. WTF is the point? Is that all this guy does? I keep hearing a bunch of knobs telling me how awesome he is and I just don't get it. No songs, just masturbation.

After seeing this guy plastered all over Bass Player magazine I expected more. Definately not one to brag about. Sorry if I offend. But this is amateur at best.
Hellborg has been experimenting with Indian Classical music lately, which is what is going on here. He plays a great solo, and holds down the groove nicely during the great violin solo, what more is required of a bass player? You must be one amazing playing if you consider this amateur.
What in this is bad? He plays some great solo ideas, that's not all the standard Hellborg slapping (like at 1:45 where he does the pizzacto lick). And the groove I was talking about is at 4:10 maybe a little before, wherever the violin solo starts. If you're going to be into music you've really got to expand your tastes, and try to find good in everything that you hear.
I never said it was bad. Just because my taste differ from yours doesn't mean my knowledge of music is not expanse. There is some good in what is playing. I am not impressed. Jonas is a public figure and is subject to praise as well as critism. I would never insult an amatuer. But, if your a professional(Jonas) I expect maybe, a little more. We learn more from critism than praise.
But you called it "amateur", which is technically calling it bad. I don't see what is amateur about this jam/solo. Not everything is a sublime musical experience on the level of Jaco solo but he had his misses also. If you are going to criticize something you should have an argument to back it up with.
So you are saying "amateur" is bad. Because I'm not. To me, again, "To Me", I was expecting more. Jonas surely is no Jaco, but, Jaco is no Jonas either. Like I said, Jonas was plastered all over Bass Player mag, so I looked him up on YouTube. I wasn't impressed. I expect more from professionals. I don't care if it's rock, jazz, r&b, or whatever. You have to be in the pocket.
But, you're either in it or you're not. He is not. Again, that's my opinion. Don't get so bent out of shape over YouTube comments. This is an open forum otherwise it would be a boring site. If you want a "worship the bassplayer"web-site no matter what he plays, then start a "Jonas Hellborg" fan site.
amateur at best?? so im guessing you would know how to use a Bb major scale underneath a C minor lead part then? you could count the strong beats of a 17 note phrase on the very weakest beats of a 4/4 bar?. Im guessing you play only rock?
Oh my, someone has been reading too many books. Look man, it is just my opinion. Don't have a cow. Do you think Jonas cares what I say about him. It's YouTube. Nice comeback. I bet you've been dying to get that one posted. Copy On my friend.

couldnt agree with you more
i had some bootlegs vids of him with Lane
and they did one big completely on the spot improve
Lane Broke a string(both his Main and Backup guitar)Jonas and Michael Shrieve started jamming and then Lane got his guitar back and then joined them and for a 15 minute insane Jam i was amazed at how they just came together as if they has some sort of rehearsal or something but it was completely improvised
i actually sat up and just jaw droping stuff
that is talent!

I've met Jonas Hellborg and I can honestly say he is one of the most arrogant and ignorant musicians I have ever come across.
He is obsessed with the Indian style his instrument is so badly suited to, and has no regard for the opinions of others.
We don't like him!!

What's so far out about playing Bb major scale underneath Cm lead? You got those notes, just feel them and sing with them to the other.
