I definately prefer the American version to this, too much talking during the shootout. The screams where really un-needed and they drowned out the music in the background, which when you watch the US version really goes hand and hand with the scene and the brutalness you're watching.

Wow the Japanese versions of transformers are always terrible. I normally like anime, but they always seem to miss the point on transformers.

I know G1 was originally Japanese, but the movie really was made for the states and you can tell.

I know it was animated in Japan. That's why I have a love-hate relationship with Japanese culture. On the one hand they have a lot of cool themes and ideas kicking around, on the other they are an entire country of uninspired yes-men who only have one original idea every 7 years so they just recycle old ones never straying from what has already been proven to sell.

Just look at Bleach. It's incredibly popular, and I love it, but there is not one original character or theme in it.

@Phoboskomboa I agree, but maybe just on a hyper mainstream level, I´m a big fan of retro anime (hate the word anime) but there´s a lot of great ¨new¨ stuff, personally, I don´t like Bleach (I prefer the manga), on the other hand, I do love Hajime no ippo...and let´s not forget about the rigid jap anime genres, you just have to dig deep to find those rare gems, and of course, what suits your personal tastes.

.........it was animated in Japan (like so many other shows) because it was cheaper. the rest was done in the US.

Japan is more original that you make it out to be, just look at Nintendo's history and how it influenced every other game developer.

also your dislike for Japanese culture may come from that its not western culture, even their storytelling logic is different. took me a while to even get some the Japenese Transformers shows :P

@henkman00 I don't dislike Japanese culture. Quite the opposite. I just realize how incredibly limited it can be. It's a hyper focus grouped culture that sells only to trends and discourages cultural experimentation even more than in the US. Even their "counter culture" is contrived and dependent on the whims of their "what will sell more" mentality.

The point is that Transformers in America was different from everything else. The Japanese version went out of its way to fit in.

@henkman00 Just look at the purely Japanese Transformers shows. Generic voices. Stale themes. They add nothing to the cannon. It's all a bunch of recycling of canned animation with interchangeable lines that goes nowhere.

Now look at the US tranformers series. If they have a flaw, it is pandering too much to G1, but they took the mythos in new and interesting directions and actually made interesting characters and interactions. There's a reason that American TF shows have cult followings.

I like the deaths sound more real. In US dub they just kinda fall over. Here they scream in pain.

I like how the Autobots (Cybertrons) screamed in agony when they were shot and killed.

Prowl and Ironhide were the best. REAL pain and agony in their voices.

They do that with all musical numbers in animated projects. Look at FLCL, nothing but dialog through all The Pillows songs. Which is the entire score of that series. So it's not a sign of distaste. Just a regular standard in Japanese presentation.

Sorry, but the voices don't have the same impact as those of the American voice actors. No one could ever fill Peter Cullen's shoes as Prime.

Genda Tesshou plays the voice of Primus in Transformers Galaxy Force and for Optimus Prime in the Japanese dub of the live action movie. :) I do prefer Cullen over Genda though, but I prefer the Japanese voice for Starscream - Chris Latta's Starscream/Cobra Commander voice sounds like a _GIRL_. :)

Actually silence is usually the norm in many Japanese animations.  Usually English Dubs voice over pointless dialogue. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Well, what is pain but a sensory reaction to being damaged or a fault. I'd say that that pain would be the most efficient way of representing that, and the Quintessons would be evil enough to make them feel pain so they'd be torturable.

I've noticed in this scene that although there's no screaming or dialogue during the Autobots deaths in the English version, the Japanease version added the screaming and dialogue to cover up the song,Instruments of Destruction. Since it's in English. Is it possible that there was a fear that Japanease audiences wouldn't understand the song or get it's meaning since it's in English?

your missing the point, in the ep were Skyfire falls in the ice (again) there is no happy ending. no ''to be continued'' no ''we will dig him out'' no voice over the radio going ''im fine guys'' even the ep after that one wasnt about saving Skyfire. so for two eps. i looked Skyfire died. and the drones. one seemed alive with emotions. but i see you point anyway. countless battles before the movie were everybody walks off. her everybody dies..still cool dont forget this is a movie

As a kid, it was very traumatic to see cartoon characters die in a cartoon for the first time. I was scared for years after seeing this scene. I hated the writers of the film for a long time afterwards, but I eventually accepted it. But it still effects (it even hurts) me when I see it every time.

I remember applauding the additional dialogue Disney added in Castle in the Sky, but this seems unwarranted. If you're going to add extra grunts and screams, at least try not to make them sound cheesy. -_-

That's his name.  A common practice for children's animation in Japan at the time (I'm not sure if they still do this) was to show the character's name for a moment when they first appear.

You can tell that this sounds alot more life-like than the original English version as there is screaming, grunting, and additional lines. In fact, it sounds more life-like that its scary.

Starscream's Japanese voice actor was Hirotaka Suzuoki. Like Chris Latta, Japan lost him in August of 2006, twelve years after Chris's death.
