@rax7 Totally not. We did a lot of training with him when he was very young. He did this bath thing pretty much every day. He'd fly off to a tree over the swingset and dry off while my son would play on the playground. Then he'd ride the swings with us (there's a vid), and show-off some tricks for bystanders - he would fetch dollar bills :)
i would like to mention that you cannot teach all parots to free fly only some eg sun conure, macaw, cockatoo, and ive seen in rare ocasions budgies and cockatiels
I have a question for anyone who can answer me. I am thinking of getting a conure. I spend most of the day away from home (since i'm in school), let's say from 6:20am to 3:30 - 4:00pm,so obviously I cannot give him attention during that time, but I can give attention the rest of the day up until nighttme. Is that ok?
@MasterJoker202 Well I have 2 Sun conures myself and have a similar situation cause i'm a student too. but when i got my conures it was during summer break, so i can at least tend to their needs and help then adjust. and when break's going to be over i lessen my time with them day by day so they'd get used to me not being there. i try to play with them at least an hour a day. They're doing great you just need to find a set up that works for you.
I am looking to get one of these birds. (I fell in love with the one at my local petsmart, named him birdo! XD) but there so expensive. And I've never had a parrot before, tho my mom did have a canary. Would they be good to go on being taken back and forth from house to house?(Parents are divorced) And is there any way i can get them cheaper then 600 dollars?
he was a happy bird.. you can see it. he experienced more than most "safe" birds that never see the outside of a cage.. keep having fun Leo.. wherever you are flying now..
Never allow your parrot to swim in a public fountain. Conures do not have an imune system and can catch diseases. Read up and gain knowledge before your ruin your birds life.
Leo is so adorable...I've watched several videos and he just amazes me! Has he ever flown away outside?
I have two green cheeked conures (parent raised, so they're not as people-friendly) that just turned one, and I've been trying to teach them stuff, but so far I've only gotten them to bob their heads when they want a treat (and now they "say yes" whenever you're eating as you walk by their cage) and shake your hand. It's really funny, because they have totally opposite personalities...
@SuperOreoMan173 Leo hasn't exactly "flown away". Sometimes he wanders further than I would want. Once he was chased by a predator and hid (which worried me), but he was doing "the right thing" at the time, and everything was fine. Since we did a lot of flight training when he was young (during the window of opportunity for learning to fly), he's never been caught by the wind, stuck in a tree, or lost.
Do you usually let your bird dry off in a warm place after he takes a bath? I heard if the feathers get saturated in water they can catch a cold. Absolutely gorgeous bird by the way.
@trichards6542 He usually only wants a bath at the park on a warm day... he would hang out in a tree until dry, then he'd come down and play on the swings with us. If he got too cold, he would come down and crawl into my shirt.
jejeje we had a conure name pajarin and he did the same thing when he heard my mother in the kitchen and he would take a bath in the sink lol..........
@dixievfd55 if u giv ur 8 y/o all the candy he wants, give a 16 y/o keys 2 ur car, let ur teens hav all the beer & cigs they want - theyll b happy too. Ive no doubt Leo was a very happy bird. My point is, you can bring happiness and joy to a life - without having to expose it to risk and potentially harmful behavior. I love my birds, as I am sure these folks loved Leo. But part of loving your kids, is doing whats best and setting limits. They aren't your pets, their your babies. At least mine r.
@zegersious You can't eliminate all risk. I don't own a parrot yet, but if I did, I am pretty sure I would not take their approach mostly because I don't know how they did it. Free flight can go sideways very quickly.
@dixievfd55 ur absolutely right, u cant eliminate all risk. BUT u can take precautions 2 protect ur loved ones. 4 example, theres always a risk of a person getting hit by a car. U cant eliminate it. BUT, theres a difference in looking both ways before you cross (still a risk) & running into the middle of the street w/o looking. My sun conure's free flighted & spends most day s out of cage w/me. However, I NEVER leave him unsupervised. Theres still risk, but not as much as if he werent supervised
it can still fly away one day ,you shouldent take the risk because it would not survive on its own, cause its born it captivity.and not to mention hawks or eagles might eat it
What a gorgeous, colourful baby! I'm a proud owner of a Pacific Parrotlet and am fascinated by any species of the parrot family! I've never come across such intelligent, cute and mischievous little critters and each 1 is a pleasure to watch-great vid and thankyou for sharing it with us! x
Young birds can learn to fly much faster than adults. Birds that do not fly outside when they're young, in the wind and high up into the trees, can usually only flutter around without much control. If an inexperienced bird flies outside, he will panic and flap until he is very high up. He'll likely end up scared, and when he attempts to come down, he'll be flying too fast to land. A predator will quickly see this bird as an easy catch.
@Trebgah The bonding is only half of the work, because if you bring outside a parrot that loves you but does not have good flying skills, it will fly too high, or be carried off by the wind, and get lost. Parrots are not homing pigeons, and all birds need to slowly learn to fly.
@destructosk8ter21 Leo's been outside, with other wild Conures, hundreds of times. It's all about understanding how he thinks - we're his flock, so he might visit other birds, but he comes home with us.
how do you allow him outside or train him to not be able to flyout side i obviously know u need to clip the wings so he cant fly but what training specs do you need
@MclarenF1GTRfan I never clipped his wings. You need to build a really good bond of trust, usually before he is old enough to fly. This is why I will never buy a weaned bird.
@rabbler0user Raising an unweaned bird is tough - like raising a baby for a short time. It requires food every 4 hours or less, and you have to very particular about temperature and clean-up, and you need a brooder to keep the bird warm. Most people just don't have the time to do it, but when you do, you get a great bird.
My wife and I weaned Leo. It was major pain and carried some risk, but it was totally worth it.
@KippTheKidd@KippTheKidd what do you mean when you say "this is why i will never buy a weaned bird"? what are the pros and cons of it? did you wean them yourself?
leo is an amazing bird- and the bond between you two is beautiful. if i ever raise a bird, i hope i can achieve that level of trust :)
The reason the bird didn't fly is because he loves his family and they love him back. Think about it this way: Would you rather have some feed you, bath you, play with you. or. would you rather be by your self. Get your own food. Run from predators??
So cute. Lucy just started taking baths (new environment and all, pretty stressful and breaks up your day). I have to cover everything with towels to keep her soaking my room. :) When she gets more comfortable we can probably move to the bathroom.
Birds (I think) each have there own distinct personalities as individuals and not species. Leo is a perfect example and is an adorable lovebird! Hes gorgeous! <3
same with parrots, but what about a loud firecracker, some other large bird or anything else which make the bird fly away in panic and loosing 'his family' out of sight, getting disoriented... especially in dense urban areas.
my sun parrot will chase across the table to my laptop and goes near on it whenever it sees leo bathing near the fountain. it will do like leo, to drink the water.. dance around or just gives leo a kiss. lol.. leo got a fan of it own kind... LOL..
Actually what a lot of people don't realize that the arc flow of the water fountain is actually designed to keep bacteria from going from one person's mouth to another, even if some people are stupid enough to put their mouth strait on the opening of it.
Are you not concerned about bacteria from strangers' mouths??? I would be weary of letting my parrot near a public fountain. You don't know who's been on it. ????
Nope, not worried about it at all. Wild birds bathe in MUCH worse. Many bacterial and most viral illnesses can't transfer to birds anyways. I'm more worried about drinking from it myself!
Leo also eats a lot of the same foods we do -- including our scrap (minus a few unhealthy foods), and gets lots of exercise, so his digestive and immune systems are very healthy.
I don't really know... The top edge of doors are convenient but dangerous perches. We have considered shaving the top of the door a little lower so it doesn't pinch his feet. Sometimes, we'll squawk and chase him off... but really, it comes down to training the people in the house to check the doors before closing them.
I hope Leo didn't catch any people germs. People are dirty.

i think it is neccessary to clip the wings untill they get used to you. I dont see what is wrong with it either way though.

He is a Sun Conure. Very beautiful birds! If you're thinking of getting one though, be sure to do a lot of research online first. Have a great day!!

There are quite a few Leo videos I've missed. I'm watching them all this afternoon.
Bo, my sun conure, does not like playing in the water, it's so cool watching one who does. So long Leo, you had a good life.

wow, that looks so beautiful with the water and all the colors *.*

my sun parrot will chase across the table to my laptop and goes near on it whenever it sees leo bathing near the fountain. it will do like leo, to drink the water.. dance around or just gives leo a kiss. lol.. leo got a fan of it own kind... LOL..

Actually what a lot of people don't realize that the arc flow of the water fountain is actually designed to keep bacteria from going from one person's mouth to another, even if some people are stupid enough to put their mouth strait on the opening of it.

THAT IS SO CUTE

Are you not concerned about bacteria from strangers' mouths??? I would be weary of letting my parrot near a public fountain. You don't know who's been on it. ????

Nope, not worried about it at all. Wild birds bathe in MUCH worse. Many bacterial and most viral illnesses can't transfer to birds anyways. I'm more worried about drinking from it myself!
Leo also eats a lot of the same foods we do -- including our scrap (minus a few unhealthy foods), and gets lots of exercise, so his digestive and immune systems are very healthy.

You certainly know how to take care of your bird, and it shows! I wish I could get my bird to not fly to me when I call him.

haha, I think you mean the opposite.

Human Slavia is bad for any bird.

i guess that;s why we're not supposed to drink from those public fountains..

Rooney will do that too. We can train him were to go but can never stop him going places...like the doors. Any tips?
MoonJumpingCow 3 years ago
I don't really know... The top edge of doors are convenient but dangerous perches. We have considered shaving the top of the door a little lower so it doesn't pinch his feet. Sometimes, we'll squawk and chase him off... but really, it comes down to training the people in the house to check the doors before closing them.

WATER FOUNTAINS OF THE WORLD: BEWARE!
Beautiful video to watch, Leo is sooo colorful with his blue tipped wings, and the water looks like floating diamonds!
mangolefty 3 years ago
Yeahhh! The colors of Leo, and the bubbles of water floating around...
I think I was more hypnotized by the water fountain than Leo ;-p. It's so calm...
