CFL's require energy to be recycled, and trucked back and forth. once into the recycling plant, and again back out with the leftover glass. the energy you're saving might not be worth it. and a study in 2007 reported that only 2% of CFL's purchased were actualy recycled. so that's a lot of mercury released into the environment. i don't know if that's a big deal or not: i'm not a pussy environmentalist, but all the ppl that wanna save the planet with these bulbs are contradicting themselves
How many bureaucrats does it take to replace a light bulb? Eight. One to fill out the requisition, three to sign the authorization, one to retrieve the bulb from the parts department, one to screw in the bulb, one to hold the ladder (safety you know) and one to supervise the other two.
Nick, incandescent light bulbs wast too much electricity. Stop being such a selfish resource hog. We all have to share this planet with each other and future generations. There are kids out there who don't have enough food to eat and you are obsessed over light bulbs. You are childish and greedy.
@newfagscanttrif0rce oh stop complaining. As i said in earlier posts, we have been using incandescent bulbs for more than a century and nothing happened to the planet, so quit whinning like a little girl. ppl like u want the world to live being paranoid about any little thing. Quit being a little busy body and worry about the energy YOU use. When u start paying my rent and light bill, then perhaps u can tell me how to light my house. Until then, worry about YOUR energy bills and fuck off
@newfagscanttrif0rce in your words, YOU said "Nick, incandescent light bulbs wast too much electricity. Stop being such a selfish resource hog. We all have to share this planet with each other and future generations" YOU'RE the one who needs stop whinning. Incandescents are not destroying the planet. is people like YOU. all you tree huggers are busy bodies worrying about others instead of yourselves. Its my light bill so i'l use what i want. No tree hugger is telling me how to light MY house
The Constitution gives the government power to regulate commerce, which includes light bulbs or sex for sale. And, in fact, prostitution is regulated in Nevada.
@hydragon Light Bulbs are just a part of a much larger argument and that is what right does the state have in forcing me to buy a product that I can only use in certain areas. I know people will say the state makes you get car insurance with that you still have a choice to walk, ride a bike or take a bus. This is taking all choice out of your hands.
They did this exact thing years ago in Australia and we have moved to being in a better place financially than we were before. We didn't collapse because of the change. LED lighting will soon overtake fluorescent lighting as it is even more efficient and lasts way longer and the lights are dimmable. People need to be told to move from wasteful systems like incandescent lighting to more efficient methods as many people are either too ignorant or too lazy to change their habits for the better.
@Martian74 I bought 4 floor lamps for our livingroom with two sockets each and installed the brightest CFL bulbs that I could buy and would fit. In Texas and South Carolina 100 watt bulbs can still be purchased after the nanny-state legislation is enacted. If I wanted to follow nonsensical, electricity rationing edicts, I'd move to Europe or worse, I could become a subject of the crown. My Austin Texas home used 866 kilowatt hours of electricity last month and cost me $80.77 USD.
@order9066 This is exactly why governments have to enact laws like this. People that are too stubborn to change to something more efficient have to be forced to change for their own good. I changed all my light bulbs years before it became law because I saw it would be a benefit to me if I did. As soon as LED lighting becomes more economical I will change to that without needing to be told by government. Eventually they will outlaw fluorescent bulbs to make slow people move to LEDS as well.
@Martian74 its not because ppl are too stubborn for change. Its that the light qualitys of "EFFICIENT BULBS" look like shit. I keep hearing over and over again that cfls and LEDs are improving. If that was really the case, government would back off and let consumers choose for themselves. As long as im paying for my light bill, NOBODY is gona determine how much energy can save or waste but me. i dont care how "efficient" cfls and leds are. if they look like shit, im not using them. Period!
@Martian74 if the world thought like you, then we'd have to report to the government just to breathe. its like government coming into your house and telling you how to live your life.Wake up and smell the coffee! If u wana be the governments pet and do whatever it wants u to do, thats YOUR business. But i think its safe to say that most Americans are capable of saving energy on their own without being told what to do by "big brother government". seems to me like you dont appreciate freedom.
@Martian74 This is the scariest thing I've read in a while. Government FORCE is for our own good. Yikes! How do people like this have any self respect? They really LIKE having people like Pelosi, Waxman, and Obama telling us how to illuminate our homes, telling us what to eat by levying taxes on foods, drinks (and smokes), they don't approve of, and making nuisances of themselves by butting into our lives. This submissive, unimaginative, herd mentality is for losers.
@Martian74 Are you my mother or father. No, you have no right to tell me how to use electricity in my own house or in my daily life, how am I affecting you by deciding to spend more money, I'm not and you know it.
@ravensnaketotem If you are creating your own electricity from solar or wind power then use it how ever you want. If you are using a public utility that is on public land (power poles) and is regulated by the government for the people (just like you can't drive unroadworthy cars on public roads even if you think it is fine) then the government can say that you shouldn't waste it unnecessarily. If it means we don't have to make more power stations to keep on wasting more electricity, it is good.
@Martian74 If the world thought like u, we'd have to report to government to how and when we should spend our own money. incandescents have been around for over 100 years and nobody has complained about them except for you moron leaf eaters. People like u are a bunch of busy bodies worrying about how other ppl live their lives. How is me using incandescents affecting your way of living?? People like you dont deserve any kind of freedom. You and the government and kiss my ass.
@noreaga12326 Read my prior comment. We won't have to make more polluting power stations if we can just make things more efficient. I am not saying you have to sit in the dark, you can have exactly as much light as you use now but do it more efficiently. It affects other people when you waste something unnecessarily that is a public utility as there is only a certain amount of it available. Banning incandescent bulbs means you don't have to even think how to save power, it is done for you.
@Martian74 I think its safe to say that most ppl in this country are capable of saving energy on their own. We dont need "big brother government" telling us how to save energy and what to spend our money on. There are vast amounts of cfls being sold everywhere and MANY people dont use them simply because they dont like them. The reason they dont like them is because many of them dont last any longer than a standard bulb and their light quality looks like shit.
@Martian74 I dont care if cfls or leds are 110% efficient. If their light quality looks like shit, I'm not using them. ur thing is energy efficiency and my thing is the looks. Sorry buddy but im not using dim, ugly lights in my house just cuz of a bunch of greenie mental cases claim that it will save the planet. You and your green friends need to worry about how much energy YOU'RE using or saving. You greenies need to mind your business instead of worrying about how others live their lives.
@noreaga12326 Think what you want, the law is coming into effect in all US states in January 2012 so 100 watt incandescent bulbs will be banned then. In subsequent years the wattage decreases so your 60 watt bulbs will be banned and then 40 watt. You will need to buy a lot of bulbs to keep a supply once they are off the shelves forever as the incandescent bulbs don't last very long before they blow. One way or another everyone will eventually be using efficient bulbs for lighting, even you.
@Martian74 i have roughly about 700 boxes of incandescent bulbs stocked up and i will keep on stocking up until they're banned. many of them being between 100-60 watts. i actually have incandescent bulbs that havent burnt out in years. with that being said, i'l be using incandescents forever and u can stick with ur toxic cfl bulbs. People like u who enjoy government up your pants 24/7 dont deserve any kind of freedom. i think cuba would be a great place for u.
@Martian74 look at all the millions of ppl like me around the globe who have stocked up on incandescents. The only way this ban will be effective is if government make incandescent bulbs illegal. Thankfully, MOST people around the world are smart enough to think for themselves. Even if incandescents are no longer on store shelves, its gona wind up in our homes either way. If ur not proud of ur home and would rather make it look like the inside of a hospital waiting room, knock urself out.
One more shining example of the Progressive Bureaucrats in our government picking "winners" and "losers" when it should be the actions of a free market that allows the individual to vote with their wallet.
This idiotic legislation was passed due to a complete and utter lie ... man-caused global warming. Shear idiocy!!!!
@cigolone1 government does have a role in what we should or shouldnt do. However the light bulb ban is taking it way too far. Just because you dont mind government telling you how to live your life doesnt mean most people feel the same way. the bulb ban is going to be very ineffective because statistics show that over 70% of the people, in the US alone disagree with the ban, which means they will be stocking up. 2) there are incand that are exempt from the ban. we can still use the exempt bulbs
I should also add re. halogen lamps that they do very well on the CR index in relation to low energy lamps. They are excellent for task lighting but invariably people over use them for mood lighting when LED would be a better option.
Inferior light? LOL! Nonesense! I use GE "daylight" CFLs all throughout my home, and they are a million times better than incandescent bulbs. I have been using CFLs for three years now, and I haven't had a single one go out.
@emantabrizi Yeah INFERIOR...look up that lovely article recently released about CLFs entitled, "Energy saving bulbs 'release cancer causing chemicals', say scientists "
@emantabrizi the fact that you would make your house looking like the inside of a bus station shows how poor taste you have in lighting. incandescents give off much nicer, warmer and natural light. your cfls give off uneven, and pissed colored light. i cant help but to laugh at you moron greenies who would light their homes with shitty flourecent bulbs because u believe it will prevent "global warming." typical liberal, a paranoid idiot who probably thinks that cars and buses should be banned.
@alex45598 ... Wow, you're a special kind of retard, huh? So, you're familiar with bus stations, are you? Do you spend a lot of time sleeping in them? If you really believe incandescent light bulbs give off natural light, then you must sleep during the day. GE's Daylight CFLs are the closest thing to natural light that you can buy today anywhere. Now, log-off and go back to sleep on your bus station bench.
@emantabrizi you're a typical liberal. When someone disagrees with your views, you call people names. I love how i can ruin your day over a video. i'm sure you're one of those ppl who believe that cfls will "stop global warming" or "stop the melting of the ice in the north pole". the fact that u would use cfls cuz u have silly beliefs shows, not only that you're the government's bitch but u have poor taste in lighting. Whos the retard now? :D
@alex45598 ... Ah, poor baby! You insult someone, and then, when they insult you back, you claim the high ground. That's adorable. No wonder you sleep in a bus station.
@emantabrizi look at you, still crying. i got u so upset, you're STILL posting to me. i bet you wana call the light bulb athoritites on me now huh :-D
I use these bulbs and see no problem with them thus far in my life. I actually preferred using them in one of my lamps that kept getting knocked down, as the Incandescent bulbs kept having their filaments broken. That doesn't mean everyone should be forced by law to use them, however. That is an entirely different issue.
LOL about a week ago i put a cfl on my ceiling to replace an incandescent that went out. I currently have 5 lights on but i have 6 lightbulb spots on my ceiling. want to know why one light isnt on? it's the cfl i bought about a week ago, it's already out
@arthur1411 I am also an electrician in the UK and am in complete agreement. People keep talking about brightness ie.lux levels without ever discussing colour rendering.Colour rendering is essential for task lighting ie.reading, drawing, sewing etc.It rates how close the lamp's(bulbs) output is to actual daylight therefore enabling our eyes to define detail and colour.Incandescent lamps win hands down on this.I'm also not a big fan of LED lighting(except for mood lighting) for the same reason.
I have a lot of health problems and CFL bulbs give me rather serious headaches unless it's very indirect lighting (i.e. from another room entirely). So I guess when this truly kicks in I'll just...be in the dark at night. Great, Washington. Thanks so much.
Of course I'll be stockpiling bulbs, but why should I have to? This is ridiculous.
Yup the liberals have done it again.. and guess who will be the first to complain that there are no jobs? ahh the liberal supporters who have no idea what their masters are doing. As the light bulb was synonymous with genius the new dim bulbs will be equally linked with liberalism AKA stupidity!
I agree, the CFL is a very poor choice because like all florescent bulbs the light emited is very harmful to human eyes. Why not go with LED lights? LED uses even less energy.
@Mestilf22 Hey, fuckwad! I was talking about the $24.9 Million in ‘Stimulus’ Grants General Electric received from Obama. Sad little fuck, next time you want to play genius, try not to assume you know what the fuck you're talking about! Asswipe!
@aprilbaby64 Oh boy, you sure are smart! Yeah, businesses received money from the stimulus bill. We knew were the money was going when it was signed. And 25 million dollars is chump change compared to the bail outs or even the 9/11 responders bill.
@carlindelco doesn't really matter. If it was such an egregious affront to your liberty he could have vetoed it. Personally I think anyone upset over this is a whiny idiot. These are the same people who will whine and cry about a fucking light bulb but will ejaculate with glee when corporations limit their choices and further consolidate markets causing prices to rise and further shielding themselves from competition. These people don't care about freedom, they're sluts for money and power.
The piece o' crap mercury filled bulb my utility co "gave" me (taxpayer funded) burned out. Not only did it light my kitchen to look like a medieval dungeon lit by candle light, it's longevity wasn't so hot either. Now I have to dispose of this properly or I'm going to leech mercury into a landfill.
Halogens are a little better than incandescents , that is not saying much though. CFLs and LED are far far more efficient. Also they have a much longer life. There really is no comparison. Saying halogen bulbs are superior is humorous, that is like saying a cheeseburger is the much healthier choice over a double cheeseburger. In the end they are both bad one is just a little less bad.
@stickedU there are halogens in the market that are as much as 50% energy efficient and they're still building more efficiency into them AND they last a long time. I have incandescent bulbs that havent burned out in 5 years. So all this non sense that ppl say about all incandescents not lasting long is another false statement. And i'm sure ur aware that not all cfls last as long as ppl claim they do. a few months back, my cousin bought 6 cfls and 4 of them burnt out in 9 or 10 months.
Its quite sad america is so far behind. This old dirty light bulb should be illegal right now and not in 2012. There better be very harsh sentences for those that hoard these old dirty bulbs. People need to be taught a lesson in respect for their government and most of all the environment. Wasteful Americans need to learn from the world and become better stewards of the earth.
@stickedU you need to start thinking for yourself and not listen to what the government and the Disney Channel is telling you. The fact that u would even think that incandescents are bad for the planet shows how brain washed your green friends got u. i think that u should be punished for allowing the government to tell u how to run ur house. hate to break it to u but most ppl dont want their homes looking like the inside of an office building. U will never learn
@noreaga12326 Power plants spit out mercury. I assume you do breathe air. Less energy production equals less mercury in the environment overall. I also assume you're smart enough not to eat mercury thermometers. If you do break a CFL bulb, don't stick your face in the plume and breathe deeply. Also when energy companies have to raise their rates when everyone starts using efficient bulbs, your type will pay dearly for it with your old bulbs making your energy insanely high. haha.
@stickedU ever think that the reason why all this "ENERGY" is wasted is because ppl forget to turn off the lights when leaving the room? Or perhaps u didnt know that other electrical things in ur house is also wasteful energy. Mayb we outa go back to not having electricity cuz its a "WASTE OF ENERGY"the fact that u wana be the governements bitch proves that u dont have a mind of ur own. let me put it this way, I pay for my light bill so i'l "waste" as much energy i want.
@stickedU the fact that MOST people disagree with ur communists and liberal thoughts is getting u mad. Well too bad because most of us dont want us telling us how to live our lives. If thats what u like, thats fine. Doesnt mean i should live my life like that. If u wana live in a place where ur told what to do all the time, get the hell out of this country and move to cuba. There, Fidel Castro will tell u when to eat, when to shit and when to sleep.
@stickedU CFLs also waste energy when u leave the light on for a long time and also because they take a while to come to its full brightness. the fact that u believe that cfls will save the planet from global warming shows how tiny your brain is. get mad all u want cuz i have AT LEAST 10 years worth of boxes of incandescents and i will continue to stock up. i also have incandescents that havent burnt out in 5 years. where many cfls dont even last a year.
@stickedU so since i have incandescents that last for years, they will not burn out quickly. i bet u didnt know that cfls dont last as long as ppl claim they do. Or maybe ur just in total denial about that too. face it, MOST ppl will ALWAYS use incandescents. maybe i outa do a video of all the incandescents that i have. Then again u may get a heart attack. o and by the way, incandescents will NEVER be illegal in the US cuz as i said b4, not all incandescents are included in the ban. so YOU LOSE!
@noreaga12326 Either you are in denial or your mentally challenged. CFLs have just as good of a light quality as the light bulb. Now you can get CFLs in soft warm light so you are wrong that one's house has to look like a "hospital" ect. AGAIN, there is no difference in light quality. DEAL WITH IT. Light bulbs are inferior plain and simple, they waste energy and your money.
@stickedU no buddy, YOU ARE in denial... u say that cfls have good light quality and again, thats your opinion, and i am willing to bet my life that MOST people would disagree with u. i have a lot of light bulbs in my house. u cant tell me that cfls have the same and nice quality as edison bulbs. YOU need to deal with it, halogen bulbs are starting to appear in stores. how do i know? Cuz i have plenty of them and they work fine just like edisons AND its energy efficient.
@noreaga12326 You need your eyes checked, I am younger than you. CFL soft white bulbs are identical to your light bulb. This FACT really bothers you doesnt it, that your silly bulb is no longer needed. Just admit it, CFLs are superior and we can end this argument we have had for over a year now.
@stickedU the only FACT is that statistics show that MOST people prefer edison bulbs over the cfl. i stated these FACTS to u many, many months ago and all of a sudden, u decide to flood my box with ur moronic views. Amazing how i can ruin ur day. funny how u PURPOSLY forgot when i told u that i know ppl who work for Sylvania and they told me that incandescents are gona continue to be available and are meeting the energy effcient standards. they're called H-A-L-O-G-E-N-S. u lose again!
Freedom comes with responsibilities. No man is an island. If you act like you know what you're doing, you won't need a nanny,
Stop burning so much oil and coal and stop producing and burning so much waste. You could have used all the bulbs you wanted for ever and ever without interference. But since you just keep on taking from the earth's finite ressources and polluting the air, then as a consequence of your actions the state has to take responsibility for you. Tough titty.
@MrWrof in some cases u are right.. HOWEVER, one of the reasons why so much energy is being wasted from these bulbs is cuz MANY ppl forget to turn their lights off when leaving the room or they use other appliances which also uses a lot of electricity. Why should i not enjoy the welcomed heat that i like in the winter from an edison bulb for the fault of ppl who are not responsible. last time i checked, im paying for my light bill so i will decide how to light my home. So tough titty for u
The Roman senate in ancient Rome wanted to ban the dangerous new building material called concrete because it wasn't as safe as marble. Thank you government for everything you do.
What lies from ReasonTV. CFLs do not take 3 minutes to warm up, do not cost 10 times more, and the mercury is lower than in a disposable battery. Also they have made CFLs that can be dimmed and all those other things, and the light is superior because it is closer to natural sunlight.
I am not saying I support a ban on incandescent bulbs, but why make up lies about CFLs? Especially since your supposed to be ReasonTV.
@whiskers123 the fact that u say that "cfls are superior" is really based on ones opinion and you are definetly entitled. However, i disagree with u on that. The only one thing that i do agree on is the light warm up. Yes, they do take some time to warm up but ur probably rite, 3 minutes might be an exageration. i would say 30 to 45 seconds. They do make dimmable cfls but they dont dim all the way like incandescents. And to me, the lighting quality from cfls are horrible. they're gloomy.
CFLs take less than 3 seconds to warm up, not 30-45 seconds. The only way they take that long is when they are outside and it is below -20 Celsius. The old CFL's took a long time to warm up, but that is in the past now. I also never said CFL's are superior only that the light is superior because its closer to natural sunlight. The old CFL's would flicker causing a gloomy effect, but again I have not seen a CFL do that in years... the new ones flicker so fast you wont notice.
Just to be clear, I do not in anyway support a ban on incandescent bulbs, the main reasoning is that because in winter all the "wasted energy" (heat) is not really wasted, it is heating your home, and is just as efficient as any electric heater. In the summer obviously the effects are two-fold, you are heating your home with incandescent bulbs, and many times cooling the home with an air conditioning unit. Meaning that 100w bulb, actually wastes 180+w of power.
@arigosethrin "the new bulbs actually emit radiation while being used aswell, which over time, is harmful." not all radiation is harmful. And what kind of radiation are you referring to? radiowaves, light, infrared, x-rays, microwaves, gamma rays, beta rays alpha radiation etc.?
Incandescent light bulbs use %90 of the energy just to produce heat instead of emitting visible light. They just waste electricity. Consider this; DDT is an effective pesticide. Like the incandescent light bulbs DDT was very popular once. So you should consider protesting the ban of DDT, it could really save thousands of lives if it was still in usage against malaria. Or consider the usage of CFC; do you think that anyone should be able to use any amount of CFC for any purpose?
The Edison lamp is good at what it does, but as far as the EU and US -- the regulation is going too far.
The light of incandescents is not so much inferior but pulsed.
Both the EU and US (as well as AU / NZ / CA) have failed to require variable or random frequency exciters for the florescent lamps.
The current arrangement will only guarantee more office sickness problems and epileptic persons having more fits (as the pulsed light does not agree with them)...
a government that can tell you what kind of light bulb you can screw in your socket is a government that WILL one day tell you when you can turn it on!
We haven't had incandescent light bulbs in Australia for a couple of years now. I planned to stock up before the ban officially kicked in, but all the shops switched over before I got a chance. The flouros are so expensive and the quality of light is very poor. It was a rash decision bought in by the government during the hype of 'An Inconvenient Truth' and we're now having problems with the disposal issue.
My "EVIL" CFL's have allowed me the true freedom of being able to produce enough electricity from wind and solar to light my home. Lighting my entire home uses less current than two(2) conventional 100W incandescents. Sorry that the goverment is going to stop you folks "freely" being able to waste and consume like you want to. Fight for the freedom to be under the bootheel of "big coal" and the utilities!
Incandescent bulbs are cheaper to buy and last about the same as CFLs, based on personal experience. Also, as reported by many here, the light emitted by flourescent bulbs is inferior
If you want to save energy, just turn off the lights you're not using. Another problem with CFLs is they take a while to get bright when you want to turn them back on again
But when we get fusion reactors working this whole "saving energy" BS will be irrelevant
@rallingsaabs I'm pleased to see you are taking a principled stand against the mandatory use of CFL's. Far too many people in your position would say it doesn't matter if some people still want to use incandescent since CFL's are better. Clearly you understand the importance of tolerance and allowing people to make their own decisions, even if you disagree with them.
I use light bulbs for reasons beyond light, moisture control on my sail boat in winter raising baby chickens for heat. The nanny states one size fits all policy ignores specialized light bulb applications.
Yep lawmakers didnt consider northern homes or homes using evap coolers. By using CFL's you loose the heating effect from the Edisons light bulb thus increasing demand on the furnace. You save on electric $10 to $20usd on your electric bill but increase your Fuel oil bill by $50 to $60 a month. Not to mention a much more carbon footprint. The Lawmakers and the DOE are narrow minded liberals why cant find a better way to get rid of the stock piles of mercury in the US and EU than spread it out?
It`s a shame the EU is banning the incandescent light bulbs which has been around for 138 years the light you get from CFL`s is never the same as the incandescent lamps you get a nice soft pale yellowish white light from the incandescent bulbs which you don`t from the CFL`s it`s a pity the US is copying the EU if we`re not careful the US might join the EU & become a new communist dictatorship
@UTubekookdetector Yeah, CFLs have some real nice features, like being overpriced, containing mercury, and having to warm up for about a minute before it's bright enough to read by.
Not trying to pick on you; I just hate CFLs. The whole situation just reminds me how Republicans love the Nanny state just as much as Democrats...
great video!!!! I always thought it was funny that the new CFL's had mercury in them. Most people I know do not know this or how to properly dispose of them. They all end up in the landfill causing more polution then good. Yes We are that stupid now.
It would be interesting to know which politicians knew this was happening, then bought shares in 'the right companies'...Also what is the mechanism by which World governments are colluding with each other to decide such increasingly global policies...
Funny because it was W that signed this into law. The GOP is evil. Just like the DEMs. Don't be fooled. It doesn't matter if it's the right or the left boot on your neck.
Used 'em and replaced them under warrenty a number of times. The capacitors/fuses go out very easily on those things and need to be replaced WELL before the LEDs die.
Ahh thank you GWB for signing H.R. 6, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and making the world a safer place by banning the production of those horrible incandescents. Now instead of buying bulbs made here in America, we have the luxury of importing mercury filled, crappy bulbs from our great friends in China. God bless American ingenuity.
If the gunverment wasn't destroying so much of the wealth of the nice people of this country we'd be rich enough to take better care of the environment. The barbaric institution of gunverment is not the one to look to to solve anything.
my parents have an old light bulb that's 40 years old. huge element inside so it wont burst. they made them to last and the new ones hjave tiny elements so they break.
White House decides the attire that Sotomayor will wear for her acceptance speech. White House asks her to bring along 5 outfits and THEY will select the one THEY think is best for the occasion.
CFL's piss me off. Even if they passed a carbon tax, I would still use incandescents just to avoid using the goddamn CFL's. This is just the latest exhibit in how nanny states suck ass.
@franz... would you go to your neighbor's home, break in, assault him and forcibly change his light bulbs? If you would do it yourself you are a monster, if not you are a coward that hires monsters to do your disgusting warlike wishes. Either way I hope one day you see the violence inherent in what you advocate, change your mind and choose PEACE. It will make the world a better place when more do.
Well I am not a big fan of that forced approach. I'd prefer a penalty taxation approach. That would create a thrust towards the more efficient bulbs while those who have good reasons to stick with the old ones still can by the old ones.
But I can perfectly well live the forced approach as well. I am confident that it will substantial speed up the progress in the more efficient technologies and also in the LED sector.
I still can't believe the great US of A has a ban of incandescent bulbs to be implemented in 2012.
The chief argument for CFL bulbs [of course] is their efficiency. What you do not hear being discussed is the TOTALLY INFERIOR light they produce.
You hear so much about the efficiency, but not enough about the burden on the consumer who [come 2012] will be forced to play $5-$10 per CFL bulb, as opposed to the $.77 I pay for a four-pack of 100W incandescents at Target.
I know CFL bulbs now already for years. From my own experience I can say that the up to date models are hardly a comparison to the older ones anymore. In regards to the light, most scare stories are simply BS. Yes the light is slightly different, but usually its more yellowish, rather than less. Only because many are used to light bulbs does not mean that their light is "better".
Studies have shown that CFLs are cheaper over the life span even when switched on/off frequently.
Indeed, improvements have been made to the CFL bulb to make the light look "yellow" kind of like an incandescent, but c'mon... I know immediately whether the light in a room is being produced by incandescent or fluorescent bulb. For someone like me that greatly appreciates the gentle, soft light of a incandescent bulb - a CFL can never replace it.
Anyway, enough of the quality discussion. The main issue here is the fact these bulbs [whether they be superior are not] are being FORCED down our throats. Maybe our nation would be better off if we switched, but do you really believe we should be forced to use them?
I have never heard any of the problems listed, and I live in Germany., Which for all its greenness vehemently oppose the CFL and light bulbs that use less electricity. They are hording light bulbs. And according to my research there are bulbs that are dimmable, but maybe not in the states which would surprise me. And about disposal Germany has almost the most extensive regulations about disposing waste and I haven't heard anything about not throwing them into the house trash.
Lexduden--When you buy a CFL light bulb it comes with a 5 step procedure on what you should if it breaks. It includes surgical mask and a trip to your local HAZ MAT depository center.
It worries me for you to talk so proudly of the greeness of Germany and you didn't know that CFL's are filled with mercury. Maybe your landfills need to be tested.
Hundred CFLs contain as much mercury as 1 old fever thermometer. Thats not great, but its not that desaster either. There is only a critical aspect when a CFL breaks, while it is on. Now thats going to be interesting to see, in my whole life I have not heard of a single time when a light bulb broke while it was on. So obviously a huge risks lies ahead.
Franz--I used to work for the city I live in and my job was for preventive maintenance on traffic signals changing light bulbs. There where numerous times that the bulbs had already blew up or would blow up while we were removing them from the traffic head.
I love my mother earth as much as the next guy I just don't need the gov't telling me what kind of car I can drive, what kind of bag I can put my groceries in, and now what kind of light bulb I have to buy.
Actually I do know about the mercury in CFLs, although I only recently found out about it. Most likely the German Government doesn't like to publicize that. What I really don't get is that you can throw away batteries that are caustic but you can't throw away a light bulb that contains little mercury in relativity to the acid in batteries..BTW I just checked our CFL light bulb and you can't throw them into your house trash. But where then then? usually things like that are well publicized.
we need to switch to LEDs - no warm up time, no electrical interference, no mercury, solid state, hard to break, more energy efficient - let the EU and the US cut the prices - incandescent bulbs cause electrical interference as well... just like cell phones, these things give you cancer if you get too close!
CFL bulbs contain mercury, so mercury vapor WILL fill the room upon breakage. So, any broken bulb WILL require a specialized EPA-moon-suit type cleanup costing thousands of dollars.
Of course, people won't do that, so you WILL suck mercury regularly. Also, when selling your house you WILL have to lie about it, so home sellers become felons.
Oh, and such bulbs WILL break when you dispose of them, so landfills and such WILL be saturated with mercury too.
He's a producer. That means he hears about a story, "produces" a video about it based upon nothing more than his own uninformed opinion, and passes it off as reason. Notice how not one expert was interviewed who explained the reason for the change.

As opposed to the tons of toxic chemicals released from coal-fired power plants.

Quit being a little busy body and worry about the energy YOU use. When u start paying my rent and light bill, then perhaps u can tell me how to light my house.

Oil lamps for the win.
GunsOfThePhoenix 8 months ago
They did this exact thing years ago in Australia and we have moved to being in a better place financially than we were before. We didn't collapse because of the change. LED lighting will soon overtake fluorescent lighting as it is even more efficient and lasts way longer and the lights are dimmable. People need to be told to move from wasteful systems like incandescent lighting to more efficient methods as many people are either too ignorant or too lazy to change their habits for the better.
Martian74 8 months ago
@Martian74 I bought 4 floor lamps for our livingroom with two sockets each and installed the brightest CFL bulbs that I could buy and would fit. In Texas and South Carolina 100 watt bulbs can still be purchased after the nanny-state legislation is enacted. If I wanted to follow nonsensical, electricity rationing edicts, I'd move to Europe or worse, I could become a subject of the crown. My Austin Texas home used 866 kilowatt hours of electricity last month and cost me $80.77 USD.
order9066 8 months ago
@order9066 This is exactly why governments have to enact laws like this. People that are too stubborn to change to something more efficient have to be forced to change for their own good. I changed all my light bulbs years before it became law because I saw it would be a benefit to me if I did. As soon as LED lighting becomes more economical I will change to that without needing to be told by government. Eventually they will outlaw fluorescent bulbs to make slow people move to LEDS as well.
Martian74 8 months ago
@Martian74 its not because ppl are too stubborn for change. Its that the light qualitys of "EFFICIENT BULBS" look like shit. I keep hearing over and over again that cfls and LEDs are improving. If that was really the case, government would back off and let consumers choose for themselves. As long as im paying for my light bill, NOBODY is gona determine how much energy can save or waste but me. i dont care how "efficient" cfls and leds are. if they look like shit, im not using them. Period!
noreaga12326 8 months ago
@Martian74 if the world thought like you, then we'd have to report to the government just to breathe. its like government coming into your house and telling you how to live your life.Wake up and smell the coffee! If u wana be the governments pet and do whatever it wants u to do, thats YOUR business. But i think its safe to say that most Americans are capable of saving energy on their own without being told what to do by "big brother government". seems to me like you dont appreciate freedom.
noreaga12326 8 months ago
@Martian74 This is the scariest thing I've read in a while. Government FORCE is for our own good. Yikes! How do people like this have any self respect? They really LIKE having people like Pelosi, Waxman, and Obama telling us how to illuminate our homes, telling us what to eat by levying taxes on foods, drinks (and smokes), they don't approve of, and making nuisances of themselves by butting into our lives. This submissive, unimaginative, herd mentality is for losers.
MrDoubtfulguest 3 months ago
@Martian74 Are you my mother or father. No, you have no right to tell me how to use electricity in my own house or in my daily life, how am I affecting you by deciding to spend more money, I'm not and you know it.
ravensnaketotem 7 months ago
@ravensnaketotem If you are creating your own electricity from solar or wind power then use it how ever you want. If you are using a public utility that is on public land (power poles) and is regulated by the government for the people (just like you can't drive unroadworthy cars on public roads even if you think it is fine) then the government can say that you shouldn't waste it unnecessarily. If it means we don't have to make more power stations to keep on wasting more electricity, it is good.
Martian74 7 months ago
@Martian74 If the world thought like u, we'd have to report to government to how and when we should spend our own money. incandescents have been around for over 100 years and nobody has complained about them except for you moron leaf eaters. People like u are a bunch of busy bodies worrying about how other ppl live their lives. How is me using incandescents affecting your way of living?? People like you dont deserve any kind of freedom. You and the government and kiss my ass.
noreaga12326 7 months ago
@noreaga12326 Read my prior comment. We won't have to make more polluting power stations if we can just make things more efficient. I am not saying you have to sit in the dark, you can have exactly as much light as you use now but do it more efficiently. It affects other people when you waste something unnecessarily that is a public utility as there is only a certain amount of it available. Banning incandescent bulbs means you don't have to even think how to save power, it is done for you.
Martian74 7 months ago
@Martian74 I think its safe to say that most ppl in this country are capable of saving energy on their own. We dont need "big brother government" telling us how to save energy and what to spend our money on. There are vast amounts of cfls being sold everywhere and MANY people dont use them simply because they dont like them. The reason they dont like them is because many of them dont last any longer than a standard bulb and their light quality looks like shit.
noreaga12326 7 months ago
@Martian74 I dont care if cfls or leds are 110% efficient. If their light quality looks like shit, I'm not using them. ur thing is energy efficiency and my thing is the looks. Sorry buddy but im not using dim, ugly lights in my house just cuz of a bunch of greenie mental cases claim that it will save the planet. You and your green friends need to worry about how much energy YOU'RE using or saving. You greenies need to mind your business instead of worrying about how others live their lives.
noreaga12326 7 months ago
@noreaga12326 Think what you want, the law is coming into effect in all US states in January 2012 so 100 watt incandescent bulbs will be banned then. In subsequent years the wattage decreases so your 60 watt bulbs will be banned and then 40 watt. You will need to buy a lot of bulbs to keep a supply once they are off the shelves forever as the incandescent bulbs don't last very long before they blow. One way or another everyone will eventually be using efficient bulbs for lighting, even you.
Martian74 7 months ago
@Martian74 i have roughly about 700 boxes of incandescent bulbs stocked up and i will keep on stocking up until they're banned. many of them being between 100-60 watts. i actually have incandescent bulbs that havent burnt out in years. with that being said, i'l be using incandescents forever and u can stick with ur toxic cfl bulbs. People like u who enjoy government up your pants 24/7 dont deserve any kind of freedom. i think cuba would be a great place for u.
noreaga12326 7 months ago 5
@Martian74 look at all the millions of ppl like me around the globe who have stocked up on incandescents. The only way this ban will be effective is if government make incandescent bulbs illegal. Thankfully, MOST people around the world are smart enough to think for themselves. Even if incandescents are no longer on store shelves, its gona wind up in our homes either way. If ur not proud of ur home and would rather make it look like the inside of a hospital waiting room, knock urself out.

2) there are incand that are exempt from the ban. we can still use the exempt bulbs

emantabrizi 10 months ago

I had to laugh at the inferior light statement.
I use these bulbs and see no problem with them thus far in my life. I actually preferred using them in one of my lamps that kept getting knocked down, as the Incandescent bulbs kept having their filaments broken. That doesn't mean everyone should be forced by law to use them, however. That is an entirely different issue.

I am an electrician in the UK and much of my work now involves installing halogen downlights into houses that previously had incandescent bulbs.
Rooms that were once lit by a 60w bulb are now illuminated by six 50w bulbs(5 x carbon emissions).
Is this another case of EU unintended consequences or vested interest?
arthur1411 1 year ago 9
@arthur1411 I am also an electrician in the UK and am in complete agreement. People keep talking about brightness ie.lux levels without ever discussing colour rendering.Colour rendering is essential for task lighting ie.reading, drawing, sewing etc.It rates how close the lamp's(bulbs) output is to actual daylight therefore enabling our eyes to define detail and colour.Incandescent lamps win hands down on this.I'm also not a big fan of LED lighting(except for mood lighting) for the same reason.

So this is progress? How Orwellian.
aprilbaby64 1 year ago
Halogens are a little better than incandescents , that is not saying much though. CFLs and LED are far far more efficient. Also they have a much longer life. There really is no comparison. Saying halogen bulbs are superior is humorous, that is like saying a cheeseburger is the much healthier choice over a double cheeseburger. In the end they are both bad one is just a little less bad.
stickedU 1 year ago
@stickedU there are halogens in the market that are as much as 50% energy efficient and they're still building more efficiency into them AND they last a long time. I have incandescent bulbs that havent burned out in 5 years. So all this non sense that ppl say about all incandescents not lasting long is another false statement. And i'm sure ur aware that not all cfls last as long as ppl claim they do. a few months back, my cousin bought 6 cfls and 4 of them burnt out in 9 or 10 months.

Its quite sad america is so far behind. This old dirty light bulb should be illegal right now and not in 2012. There better be very harsh sentences for those that hoard these old dirty bulbs. stickedU 1 year ago
@stickedU you need to start thinking for yourself and not listen to what the government and the Disney Channel is telling you. noreaga12326 1 year ago
Also when energy companies have to raise their rates when everyone starts using efficient bulbs, your type will pay dearly for it with your old bulbs making your energy insanely high. haha.
stickedU 1 year ago
@stickedU ever think that the reason why all this "ENERGY" is wasted is because ppl forget to turn off the lights when leaving the room? Or perhaps u didnt know that other electrical things in ur house is also wasteful energy. Mayb we outa go back to not having electricity cuz its a "WASTE OF ENERGY"the fact that u wana be the governements bitch proves that u dont have a mind of ur own. let me put it this way, I pay for my light bill so i'l "waste" as much energy i want.
noreaga12326 1 year ago
@stickedU the fact that MOST people disagree with ur communists and liberal thoughts is getting u mad. Well too bad because most of us dont want us telling us how to live our lives. There, Fidel Castro will tell u when to eat, when to shit and when to sleep.
noreaga12326 1 year ago
@stickedU CFLs also waste energy when u leave the light on for a long time and also because they take a while to come to its full brightness. the fact that u believe that cfls will save the planet from global warming shows how tiny your brain is. get mad all u want cuz i have AT LEAST 10 years worth of boxes of incandescents and i will continue to stock up. i also have incandescents that havent burnt out in 5 years. where many cfls dont even last a year.
noreaga12326 1 year ago
@stickedU so since i have incandescents that last for years, they will not burn out quickly. i bet u didnt know that cfls dont last as long as ppl claim they do. Light bulbs are inferior plain and simple, they waste energy and your money.
stickedU 1 year ago
@stickedU no buddy, YOU ARE in denial... u say that cfls have good light quality and again, thats your opinion, and i am willing to bet my life that MOST people would disagree with u. i have a lot of light bulbs in my house. u cant tell me that cfls have the same and nice quality as edison bulbs.

@noreaga12326
Meaning that 100w bulb, actually wastes 180+w of power.
whiskers123 1 year ago
the new bulbs actually emit radiation while being used aswell, which over time, is harmful.
arigosethrin 1 year ago
@arigosethrin "the new bulbs actually emit radiation while being used aswell, which over time, is harmful." not all radiation is harmful. And what kind of radiation are you referring to? radiowaves, light, infrared, x-rays, microwaves, gamma rays, beta rays alpha radiation etc.?
GeneralCalculus 1 year ago

Fight for the freedom to be under the bootheel of "big coal" and the utilities!
rallingsaabs 1 year ago
@rallingsaabs Meanwhile, in the real world...
Md2802 1 year ago
@rallingsaabs I'm pleased to see you are taking a principled stand against the mandatory use of CFL's. Far too many people in your position would say it doesn't matter if some people still want to use incandescent since CFL's are better. Clearly you understand the importance of tolerance and allowing people to make their own decisions, even if you disagree with them.

imtc88 1 year ago 2
Yep lawmakers didnt consider northern homes or homes using evap coolers. By using CFL's you loose the heating effect from the Edisons light bulb thus increasing demand on the furnace. You save on electric $10 to $20usd on your electric bill but increase your Fuel oil bill by $50 to $60 a month. Not to mention a much more carbon footprint. The Lawmakers and the DOE are narrow minded liberals why cant find a better way to get rid of the stock piles of mercury in the US and EU than spread it out?
RU469NO 2 years ago
It`s a shame the EU is banning the incandescent light bulbs which has been around for 138 years the light you get from CFL`s is never the same as the incandescent lamps you get a nice soft pale yellowish white light from the incandescent bulbs which you don`t from the CFL`s it`s a pity the US is copying the EU if we`re not careful the US might join the EU & become a new communist dictatorship

PS:
I am perfectly aware that such a light bulb ban is not exactly what libertarians dream about and I can understand it from their point of view.
Franzjosefderzweite 2 years ago
Well I am not a big fan of that forced approach. I'd prefer a penalty taxation approach. That would create a thrust towards the more efficient bulbs while those who have good reasons to stick with the old ones still can by the old ones.
But I can perfectly well live the forced approach as well. I am confident that it will substantial speed up the progress in the more efficient technologies and also in the LED sector.
Franzjosefderzweite 2 years ago
I still can't believe the great US of A has a ban of incandescent bulbs to be implemented in 2012.
The chief argument for CFL bulbs [of course] is their efficiency. What you do not hear being discussed is the TOTALLY INFERIOR light they produce.
You hear so much about the efficiency, but not enough about the burden on the consumer who [come 2012] will be forced to play $5-$10 per CFL bulb, as opposed to the $.77 I pay for a four-pack of 100W incandescents at Target.
ryanjurek 2 years ago
I know CFL bulbs now already for years. From my own experience I can say that the up to date models are hardly a comparison to the older ones anymore. In regards to the light, most scare stories are simply BS. Yes the light is slightly different, but usually its more yellowish, rather than less. Only because many are used to light bulbs does not mean that their light is "better".
Studies have shown that CFLs are cheaper over the life span even when switched on/off frequently.
Franzjosefderzweite 2 years ago
Indeed, improvements have been made to the CFL bulb to make the light look "yellow" kind of like an incandescent, but c'mon... I know immediately whether the light in a room is being produced by incandescent or fluorescent bulb. For someone like me that greatly appreciates the gentle, soft light of a incandescent bulb - a CFL can never replace it.
ryanjurek 2 years ago 3
Anyway, enough of the quality discussion. The main issue here is the fact these bulbs [whether they be superior are not] are being FORCED down our throats. Maybe our nation would be better off if we switched, but do you really believe we should be forced to use them?
ryanjurek 2 years ago
"Maybe our nation would be better off..."
We could also debate the difference between the collective good vs. the individual good. =)

Lexduden 2 years ago
Lexduden--When you buy a CFL light bulb it comes with a 5 step procedure on what you should if it breaks. It includes surgical mask and a trip to your local HAZ MAT depository center.
It worries me for you to talk so proudly of the greeness of Germany and you didn't know that CFL's are filled with mercury. Maybe your landfills need to be tested.
dynamitemike65 2 years ago
Hundred CFLs contain as much mercury as 1 old fever thermometer. Thats not great, but its not that desaster either. There is only a critical aspect when a CFL breaks, while it is on. Now thats going to be interesting to see, in my whole life I have not heard of a single time when a light bulb broke while it was on. So obviously a huge risks lies ahead.
Franzjosefderzweite 2 years ago
Franz--I used to work for the city I live in and my job was for preventive maintenance on traffic signals changing light bulbs. There where numerous times that the bulbs had already blew up or would blow up while we were removing them from the traffic head.
I love my mother earth as much as the next guy I just don't need the gov't telling me what kind of car I can drive, what kind of bag I can put my groceries in, and now what kind of light bulb I have to buy.
dynamitemike65 2 years ago

I work in the lighting industry. CFL's can not be used in cold temperatures because the mercury must warm up for them to illuminate.
ALittleBitPregnant 2 years ago 3
CFL bulbs contain mercury, so mercury vapor WILL fill the room upon breakage. So, any broken bulb WILL require a specialized EPA-moon-suit type cleanup costing thousands of dollars.
Of course, people won't do that, so you WILL suck mercury regularly. Also, when selling your house you WILL have to lie about it, so home sellers become felons.
Oh, and such bulbs WILL break when you dispose of them, so landfills and such WILL be saturated with mercury too.
So-called Environmentalists are TOXIC.
