I was curious, what the chain was for and looked at a few videos about oil drilling. After two or three vids I wondered, why they use that primitive chain instead of using smart technology.
At last I got to this video and thank god, someone was intelligent enough, to use smart machinery.
The machine is there so even a dumb ass can run the well. Just push some buttons pull a lever....... That way the can hire a dumb ass for half the pay. Hell even a fat guy can do it.
I suspect they work so slowly because of the enormous oil reserves they have there, no reason to hurry. I do like the fact that they're using automation for connections, seems a bit safer to me. I've never worked in the oil field but have 2 bro-in-laws that drill.
After spending over 10 years on rigs that cant produce the torque to propely make a thread, I recon machines are gods gift to the drilling industry. It sure beats fishing for busted strings after the thread breaks because it wasnt shouldered propely.

I have to agree with you it's a great job. In the early 80'S i worked for Arapahoe out of Farmington NM. In 1981 we went up to Moab on a wildcatting adventure to drill 2 holes.Both locations were at dead-horse point area. Our 1st hole TD was 13.000 a bust 2nd hole we last all circulation, pumps were fine. They had us dump materials in the hole 24-7 the water trucks couldn't keep up. It turned out a mile down the canyon our fluids where coming up out of the ground DNR put a end to that hole.

I still have all my fingers and toes, and know for a fact that most old roughnecks do too. it is all about skill and experience. I work 7 days a week, 8hrs a day. Its all about perseverance.

Man, u wanna see real drilling? come to Australia man in the desert with us boys, i aint got no casing spinners no rod spinners no fucken nuthin, everything, every single joint is done up by hand then u gotta get under the rigs and shovel an scrape all the cuttings away, mind u ur also workin in 45-50celcius with no wind and 100% humidity, and the rig i work on is model of 1967 man, so u wanna talk about riggin cunt? last a hitch on our rigs.
