Knowing that Peter Gabriel likes to write spiritual songs (I believe he wrote the soundtrack for Passion?), I think this song is really about his relationship with God. Being the amazing songwriter he is, however, he made it ambiguous enough to be interpreted as a love song. And even if it is a love song, I seriously don't feel the pain in it.. I interpret it to be a confession or a surrender to the undeniable feelings of love [he] gets when he looks into [her] eyes.. (grand facade = his denial)

It wasn't passion, it was "The Last Temptation of Christ". And it was seriously disowned by most christian religions. I actually enjoyed the movie, however it protrays jesus as bisexual and hints that he and mary had a thing, kind of frowned upon by the religious sector. Anyway "Passion" was scored by John Debney and Mel Gibson.

I kind of saw it as faith-affirming because He saw everything he could be as a "normal" guy and stuck to it anyway because He realized his larger importance.
