I remember cycling down to West Park in Wolverhampton to see the launch
of their station. Beacon got me listening to Gallagher and Lyle,
some good songs from their Breakaway album. I can remember a instrumental track which had a Latin American feel to it but cannot remember who the artist was but was a very catchy little number… if any one has any idea’s please drop me a email I thought was Chico Arnez but not sure.
Beacon really was a fabulous station between 1976 and 1979. I read a recent Phd thesis that stated that Beacon was disliked by a percentage of the audience because it wasn't local enough. I know that the IBA was constantly berating Beacon for being different from the other ILR stations and didn't have a sufficiently local flavour. I was there in Wolves as a teenager in 1976 and I can confirm that Beacon felt every bit a part of the community. Bu it was different in sound and better for it.
Does anyone know if there's a copy of the extremely punchy TV advert for Beacon 303 based on the "You" jingle? If you search on YT for TM "You" Jingles - WFYR Chicago, the TV advert used the second jingle on that video with random stills of the West Midlands interspersed with the lyrics every couple of seconds.
It was 45 seconds long and aired in late 1978 to early 1979.
@Lairlimoges - oh yeah, Mike Baker dedicated a track during the first hour of Beacon by saying, "I play that for the Big Boss with the hot sauce". I presume he meant Jay Oliver.
