  • It's easy to forget that this was live TV with millions of viewers. The transition at 1:27 was totally unexpected and perfectly executed. In retrospect, you see Mike M. looking over his shoulder and Peter Buck walking over and facing the drum stand for the transition, but until they rip into Drive, it looks like they're just getting ready for a big finish. So amazing to watch again. I still get chills.

  • thanks for the post. a lot of people forget or never saw how gorgeous michael was, hair or no hair (i think he still is) but that goatee and his magnetic persona just knocked me out when i saw this for the first time. talk about changes.

  • Thanks for posting this version.... I had looked for it forever. I remember this performance on the VMA's. One of their best ever - IMHO.

  • @MistyG929 yeah I remember it was the '92 VMA's hosted by Christian Slater. I still have it recorded somewhere on VHS haha. I think it's def my fav VMA show ever. I remember Pearl Jam brough the actor from the Jeremy video to the show and I belive gave him the award...

  • i remember watching this when it first aired. this is the only version of Drive that I like

  • I've been looking for this. I remember it from back when MTV deserved to be called "music television". I don't even think they play videos anymore. If they do it's garbage. I gave up on them years ago. It's just all fond memories now...

I used to rush home from school to watch MTV.

  • The person playing (bass) guitar is of course not Lenny Kravitz, but Brian Harris from Athens, GA. He played in the Athens band Asa Nisi Masa and can also be seen in the Shiny Happy People video.

  • GREAT version. Nice hard edge. Lenny Kravitz backup snarling guitar. Mike is in good voice, and I love to watch as the music moves him.

  • @Haileysgramma Whoa! Saw this live when I was 17 and never realized that was Lenny on bass. I think that same year John Paul Jones played bass for Kravitz's band at the VMAs when HIS bass player quit days before!
