This is disappointing , I always understood German engineering was much better than this, I'm considering the E46 M3 myself....now I'm having second thoughts.
I know the settlement has expired, but will BMW still fix this problem for free under any circumstances? Had anyone ever gotten it fixed by BMW after the settlement ended? Any response will be very helpful, thank you
@chiperta In this video reinforcements are being done to an e46 M3. I'm guessing since it's being done to it now, it was not done to it in the factory.
Looks decent I think that I would of spot drilled with a 1/8 or 1/16 drill to stop the cracking I had a car that I cracked the strut towers yes due to abuse and spot drilling right at the end of the crack stopped it. Cracks can continue even after welding if they aren't spot drilled. Nice Vid though
this is an extreme case involving abuse and neglect, the owner would have been driving it for months after it broke and was obviously doing a lot of burnouts when he knew about the problem.
Poor engineering, for sure. Class action benefits have run out Sept 2010. Now consumers must pay for company's shortcomings and fear buying these cars.
You all do realize the issue was recalled and you can have it fixed for free by any BMW dealership...? Why go do a second or third rate job at some mechanic shop lol... Mine had no problems w/ its subframe after having it checked out. E46 ftw

Stress cracks can't just be welded as other cracks will develop around the welds. Whole new plating should be applied over the area to strengthen, just when you think you've fixed this car the cracks will re emerge, trust me I know it will happen.
Only if your car has never had aftermarket wheels, suspension, raced and never been in a wreck. If any of this has happened your fuc*ed and then BMW will just send ya packin empty handed.
Also, its not a recall its a settlement that expires in a few months. if your cars not fixed here soon it will never be fixed free from them.
I suggest and 3 series owner (e36 or e46), specially M3 owners. Get the reinforcement kit installed BEFORE this happens. I am doing it in my E46 M3 now.
hey I'm having the same problems with my 2000 323ci one of the mounts came off from the chassis. do you think the BMW dealership would take care of this problem if I have aftermarket wheels on my car??
You are a retard, you are more retarded than that. Cheet metal what is that you fucking tard. damn you cant even spell right, or make a dis that is clever. Just shoot yourself in the face with a shotgun.
Other wise decent video with absolutely stupid music. What is on people's minds that they would just throw their efforts out the window with trash music. No thanks!
(previous message continued) ...the owner of this M3 should really just contact BMW and have them take care of the repairs. A proper repair as per the official bulletin consists of whole new "frame" (for lack of the exact technical word) that is improved structurally. This patch up work you have done I'm afraid will only last so long just as it did on my car, as the real issue is the weak design of the original sheet metal. Good luck to the owner of this M3.
Ok, I just finished watching the video and I feel compelled to comment. I have a 01 suffering from the very same issue. BMW is actually taking care of the repairs as we speak. The dealer might say no but if you contact BMW NA they WILL take care of it (there is a bulletin). Furthermore, when my car up on the lift with everything removed my car looked EXACTLY like the work you did. Old cracks had already been welded up but failed nontheless. IMO this is just temporary patch work and the ownder of
In my opinion welding the Cracks won't help improve the stability of the subframe. Strengthening on one some points will only move the stresses and strains to the next weak spot. This action was a waste of time and money.
Because of the known Problems there is an improved subframe available at BMW (fittet since 2002 I think), which should be fitted for free by a BMW-Dealer.
There is a class action lawsuit filed with the United States District Court Central District of California against BMW NA. The litigation alleges that the sub-frame on the E46 1999 to 2006 model are affected in that the rear axle support weaken from the constant loading and unloading associated normal driving eventually fracturing and ripping away from the chassis sheet metal. If your car is experiencing this, Man I suggest you add your self to the class cation lawsuit, like I did..
Man!!!! I thought my e36 rear shock mounts were bad! My m3 looks pretty damn good compared to the e46 in the video. Good up on the video though, love to see a repair on the e36 rear hopefully soon. My car sucks too!
We just started to get into this kind of work, so I personally havne't seen very many, however I heard that E36 body style is even worse than the E46.
Depending on how bad it is, You might want to try welding plates on the top and bottom, cover as much of the area as possible, then find some frame rail supports to weld those plates to and use plenty of gussets.
nice vid dude.. informative. Lemme ask ur opinion.. I have an e36 325i the damage has been done to the subframe mounts. so much so that the reinforcement plates i bought and installed just patched the problem, so its fixed technically but its no stronger than stock. I have access to a garage, lift, tig/mig welding, unlimited amounts of steel/aluminum, and an automated plasma cutter. it there a way to fix this problem, so it can be track worthy again. suggestions? thanx.
Just got a reinforcement kit for my 325i for £147. Any idea on labour costs?

DO NOT BUY A USED E46 - THIS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU.
(the lawsuit is over, so its all out of pocket for the owner)

If you have an e36 m3 this reinforcement is done in the factory so there is no need to be done.

Hi there.
How old is the car, they fitted the stronger subframe on cars fabricated from march2000 in Europe.
Contack your BMW dealer instead of welding it that way, as said it will be money wasted.
Hope you find a solution on the problem
