  • I read the comments of ARAUZ1625 and I couldn't agree more, but there was one thing you forgot to mention. The one thing that can't be created through musicianship. Sarah Vaughan had a depth and quality of tone that was a birthright. You can develop and improve your instrument, but at the end of the day, you can only work with what you've been given. Sarah had it all.

  • To ME, to even bring Barbara IN to comparrison (and for what?), is like syrup and Molasses, or like Sparkling cider and fine wine! The one is more light and fizzy, and the other is more rich and strong in influence! Sarah is the 'wine' of song interpretation, and the molasses of vocal expression, both of which are more influencial to the enire atmosphere they envelope! Loving them both is "what it is";. The impact, effect, depth and musical tenure is what 'this' is.

  • This was my first recording I recieved from Columbia Records, back in the day when you got 10 albums for 99cents Then you had to buy so many per month or year. This was the best investment I ever made. I didn't even know who Sarah Vaughan was, but after playing this recording, I fell in love for the first time in my life. And I have been in Love with Sarah ever since. Some 40+ years later.

  • I wish I could have gone to hear her perform live and have met the Great Sarah Lois Vaughan in person. That's my one big regret in life. :'(

  • I adore Sarah, but this particular song is hands down perfected by Streisand. She has more passion in her singing! To me, so many of Sarah's work has too much "vocal gymnastics" that it distracts from the piece of music. Streisand, is more expressive and is by far much more understanding of a songs lyrics. Guess its because she considers herself an actress who sings and can infuse the song as the character in it. I love Sarah, please do not misunderstand, but Barbra Streisand is genial!!!

  • @BarbraLovesYou "Streisand, is more expressive and is by far much more understanding of a songs lyrics." Don't agree. Just Apples and Oranges.

  • @BarbraLovesYou ahahah funny really funny....

  • @BarbraLovesYou what does Barbra Streisand have to do with Sarah Vaughan? Why compare them? It's like comparing Britney to Janis..

  • @BarbraLovesYou PLEASE. you must be an amateur or you would not say such things. Sass was the master. It was like hearing the best created voice God ever made. Barbra, and I like her, cannot even be put into the same category as a master of jazz such as Sarah Vaughan.

  • @ocnoreen Interesting. I meant no harm in my comment. And the reason Streisand comes into so many comments, is because she recorded this song too- and perhaps one of the more popular versions. As for you calling me an amateur - wonderful - thanks for insulting those who are just expressing their opinion on a song. Classy.

Its a song. Please. Get over it. There are people who do not think that Sarah is #1 you know. Deal with it.

But please... enough with the condescending tones.

  • From lowd D(third line in the bass clef to High G(first additional space above the fifth line in the treble clef gives you a two octaves plus on perfect fourth which is also the normal range of a bass or high baritone...a range of more than two octaves is a respectable range...however i also think you can develop e higher range if you can adduct the vocal chords by Singing rri sounds with the tongue(tongue Trills) I know that they´re falsetto, tongue trills will make them stronger in time

  • @ARAUZ1625 _YES! You are exactly RIGHT! Doing that CAN add and strengthen the vocal timbre as 'well' as the 'range'! Thank you for the mention! :-)

  • Sarah had a wider range than Barbara, but i don´t understand why make such a big deal ´bout range when what really matters is how you use your voice and of course is the way which Sarah sang (use of phonation, breath control, energy direction, musicianship, expression etc. is what makes her outstanding. Sarah sings a lot of notes which can be adapted by any intelligent singer with musicianship ...Billie Holiday had a one octave range only and she became a legend!

  • @ARAUZ1625 Of course you're right ! What makes an artist is not the high notes, or range

  • Words cannot describe!! The greatest of all! Also a wonderful song from Legrand!!!!

  • I LOVE THIS . ..

  • Nice, but i prefer Barbara's version of thing sing

  • @dreamcatcher2092 My apologies to both you and Barbra. (and it is Barbra, not Barbara)

I am an avid Barbra fan, but I don't see how you can even compare the two. Sarah Vaughan has something that, all too often, Barbra lacks - emotion. Barbra is forever seeking perfection therefore her recordings are often too clean and too technical. Sarah has a raw and earthy quality that has little surfaced in Barbra since her earliest work.

Besides, Barbra never has had, nor ever will have Sarah's range.

  • @CelticBeader Perhaps we can assume too much about how individual singers perform when we have such limited video examples of performers as Sarah, Billie, Peggy Lee and others as opposed to living artists. I suspect Barbra probably does actually have a wider range than Sarah. I don't think your claim is a given. That said, I agree that the earthy, emotive qualities of singers has diminished as making money to keep performing has overtaken many artists in their creative endeavors. Sad but true.

  • @bobbgeez I think Sarah's range was be a bit larger. She could sing the low baritone-bass F and the high soprano D.

  • with love from Azerbaijan great music

  • The class of the lady singers.

    A song writers dream.

    A listeners delight

  • The class of female singers.

If you need proof this should do it.

  • Sublime!!!

  • This gifted woman is my favorite singer of all time and she's exceptional on this tune. OMG!!!

  • This gifted woman is my favorite singer of all time and she's exceptional on this tune. OMG!!!

  • Profound

  • Ok, this is my first post ever...I had to chime in on the comment about Sarah's name being mentioned along side the Stradivarius, and the Steinway. He got it right! I absolute love Barbra, but Sarah's in a class All by herself!

  • Exceptionally Beautiful! I love her on this song!!!

  • Yes! avesraggiana your remarks about the maginficent Sarah are splendid.

  • i found another version: search for: xvid what are you doing the rest of your life

  • Like being wrapped in a warm and gently vibrating blanket. Simply the best. Someone please post Sarah doing "Pieces of Dreams."

  • sublime!

  • I first heard this song way more than 20 plus years ago. An amazingly unique performance, especially the last bit......I bought the CD the other day just because of this song. Sarah is magnificent here.

  • beautiful version!!!!!!!!!

  • Simply THE BEST SINGER EVER i agree 100% with avesraggiana, and the Le Grand arrangement is great..this is a beautiful album which Sarah recorded in France with M. Legrand in which every tune she sang merited an applause from every teary eyed musician in the recording session!

  • It sounds like someone is playing the real song in slow motion.

  • f...! a sarah realmente era muito f...!

  • Great composition, but I have to say Carmen Mcrae's version is better (check her live album The Great American Songbook). Sarah has range, timbre & vocal acrobatics, but Mcrae's rhythmic sensibility, phrasing and intensity make for a better version, in my opinion.

  • Love love love Sarah...no one ever compares.

What a range, what a thrill...got shivers on my spine each time.

  • She has such a haunting voice...I can never get enough of it!

  • Wow... Undenyably beautiful!!! Thanks Angel for sharing with me this video!

  • Sarah is definitely the best female singer ever.. Every song she sang was a vocal masterpiece..And a clinic on phonation, expression , style, vocal range and expression..

  • Thank you. I miss Sass so much. American music needs to get back to this level of artistic and emotional achievement.

  • @Ladyrants You are so correct about what you say. I miss Sass, too. She was the best.

  • Sarah is the best vocalist to have ever lived!!

  • Nobody had a set of Pipes like Sassy.

    NO ONE!

  • I have to agree with aversraggiana! Not only does she have a range that no one can touch, but she has such respect for the lyrics and I love her messing with the melody, always to a glorious effect!

  • Pure velvet silk

  • what an arrangement! Tears in my eyes.

  • @iwantahat .....Me Too! Me TOO!

  • priceless.....her voice with this orchestra is divine!!!

  • She possesses such a rare talent! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL

  • Comment removed

  • It's called a contralto voice - which means a woman's voice with a range so wide that she can sing the really, really low notes as well as the really, really high ones, and all the ones in between. Let her voice on grow you and maybe you'll find that you'll appreciate what a superb vocalist and musician Sarah Vaughan was. Certainly no pop singer today could compare to Sarah Vaughan's heavenly voice, no matter how much belting, hollering, shrieking and shrilling they do.

  • @avesraggiana That's RIGHT! I was blessed to spend some time with Sass back in the 70's and she was a dame to be sure, and a superb musician and vocalist of amazing depth. She is timeless, I do miss her. Thanks for a great post. Let these kids know what a real SINGER is all about!

  • what a luck had you to know her. what a envy!!!

  • @avesraggiana don't forget screeching and squeeking, too!

  • @avesraggiana : I agree.

  • @avesraggiana Amen.

  • @avesraggiana I beg to differ. There is one singer who could be called 'comparable', and that is Shaka Kahn. She not only has a four-octave range but is one of the few modern singers who doesn't yell, but actually sings. Phoebe Snow is good but she tends to shout her high notes, which is a little disappointing when she is so very talented. I mean no disrespect by this reply, I merely wanted to suggest Shaka Kahn to you. :-)

  • @mahthah I agree with you. Fyo the spelling is Chaka Khan :)

  • @mahthah Surely u jest.... khan had a great voice in her prime but she was a screamer..... Houston and Carey in their primes are comparable to sarah range and powerwise

  • @mahthah Not even close.

  • @mahthah No, beg to differ. Not even close.

  • @avesraggiana totalmente real tu comentario.......de un toque..sensitivo notabilisimo

  • @avesraggiana NO ONE compares to this great woman!

  • @avesraggiana Well said ;-)

  • @avesraggiana Does Anita Baker also have a contralto voice? The range sounds similar.

  • @quirpco In my layman’s opinion, yes. And please anybody else, feel free to correct me. When Anita Baker first became popular in the late ’80s, during interviews, she cited Sarah Vaughan as one of the influences on her singing.

  • @avesraggiana I can definitley see Sarah Vaughan being an influence for Anita!

  • @quirpco Could she have also influenced Nina Simone . . . sometimes I hear Nina, lol.

  • @mreunome I don't know if she was an influence, but I definitlely hear similarities.

  • Don't you Love the heaviness of her voice?!

  • One of the most perfectly constructed songs of all time. The Bergmans did these wonderful lyrics:)

  • @damone77

    Hear, hear !!!...

  • listen to how she maneuvres that melody... wow!

  • Awesome classic from amazing LP masterpiece from Sarah & Michel and actually got to see the two with huge orch at The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in LA & what a night that was...pure magic!!!

  • Sarah was the perfect singer.

  • The entire album needs to be rereleased! Please...Please...Please. My fave track from the album is "Once you've been in love." Legrand through Sassy's weed out the window while they were going to the recording studio. Classic stuff from another great singer of songs.

  • Sass. The best. Thank you.

  • the chord and the break at 2:15.......... sigh

  • wunderschön!!!

  • just magic!

  • Sassy was the best that there is,the best that there was,and the best that there will ever be.

    Brava!

  • Love Sara Vaughan, but for this particular song, Streisand is my favorite.

  • So happy for YouTube. Thought I had lost this gorgeous voice. Always have been my favorite female artist. She and Mel Torme...sublime!

  • Fantasia is not even in her league...

  • whatever...

  • very true

  • @reduxmisc So true . . .

  • @reduxmisc Fantasia sang this on Idol when she was a teenager , she learned it a few days before. She even she was worried about forgetting the words. How can you compare her live version in a singing contest to a studio version

  • @lenr112 I'm not comparing her to fantasia. This is a response to someone who did. that's the point

  • This song was the opening number in the PBS American Masters documentary about Sarah Vaughan. In it, the narrator mentioned that it someday, someone were to write the history of music he or she would have to mention three names: the Stradivarius violin, the Steinway piano and at least one voice: Sarah Vaughan!

  • I once had a sassy rottweiler, who would reliably fall into a trance whenever Sarah was singing...BLISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • "This has to be the most gorgeous performance and arrangement of a song ever."

Have you heard Fantasia's performance of this on American Idol? Gorgeous.

  • I have no words except PURE beauty....especially when she gets really low at the end.

  • AMAZING! Her version is so beautiful. Fantastic technique

  • pure artistry

  • And here come the tears...Only she can make me cry of pure amazement from the first note. Love Ms Vaughan!

  • Sarah Vaughn, the greatest.

  • Marvelous!

  • I am crying.

  • It was also my daughter's wedding song 9/20/08 and I sang this song at her wedding!!!

  • This was my wedding dance.

  • God. There you are again. This has to be the most gorgeous performance and arrangement of a song ever. I stil, and will always love it. Sarah, I'm just so glad my baby will hear you on my recordings.

  • I adore this album. Actually all of the mainstream years.

  • Her voice is like velvet...thanks for posting! 5*
