Classic! Miles always kept up with the times, and he was decades before his time! Not many folks was into the Miles Davis of the 70s-according to history, that is-but almost two decades after his death (I was in high school when that occurred), cats my age are hearing these mixes and then some on public radio, in the clubs, the movies, coffee shops, bars, satellite, you name it.
Come to think of it, I'm waiting on the 40th Anniversary of Bitches Brew to come out. Again, CLASS-IC!
The guitarists soloing style is a bit annoying but you can't deny that he has some skill playing atonal alien-sounding phrases like that. sounds like a lot of wankery though. prefer the rythm guitarists sound.
try JOOKLO... but there a lot of people in the underground keeping this kind of energy alive, in other forms, but powerful almost... yes almost like this :) yo
Yeh, it was at Yoshi's and was awesome. It might have been better described as a tribute band, but it did have a couple of the original members. Sonny Fortune played sax and flute. Here's a review of the show with more info about the band:
@fusionfreak2009 ...dude, despite being a guitarist, Henderson is my favorite of Miles' sidemen during this period, and I learned a lot from listening to him, too.......! =)
I love the fact that Pete Cosey wasn't afraid to just go for it and take chances. Same thing I love about John McLaughlin - back when he was making this type of music (with Miles, then Tony Williams, then Mahavishnu) he had such a wonderfully reckless soloing style. I live and die by the mindset that feeling trumps technical accuracy. Brilliant clip! Gotta love Al Foster too! With the nice hat!
If anyone knows where I can get live recordings of this specificband, please contact me. I can't find anything but Dark Magus and I could do without the extra sax and guitar players. Thanks. :)
If you mean the band with Miles Davis - Liebman - Cosey - Lucas - Mtume - Foster, then you may have to go to bootlegs. There's a widely available concert from Olympia in Paris which is moderately good.
This was such an interesting band, it always seemed to take them a little time to gel each gig, but when they did, well, it sounded like this. Brilliant

Nowhere. Although I saw a reunion of this band about a year ago in Oakland. Henderson headed it I believe and they sounded great.
