w.e man its just a starter but u do wana fix ur mounts i prefer aftermarket performance mounts they are allmost garentee not to fail if u find a good one for ur car,, if u have an engine lift.. like it remove old mount and replace! there should b 3 mounts on ur car cause i have done this on myne but its a mazda 3 I LOVE LITTLE ENGINS! 4 bangers:)
You probably found out by now but that starter noise is very common. It will not fail, just annoying. You can remove it and grease the bearings inside the starter to provide a temp fix. Should take a few hours if you have not done it before.
@melyssa217 I have thought about it some more... To be more thorough, if it happens only on start-up(just after you finish turning the key) and not when you shut the car down after; than its the bearing in the starter motor thats lost grease. I would leave this until the starter eventually does go bad as the bearings only running for starting up the car. If it does it when shutting down too, than its an idler pulley bearing which my previous post was correct. Rockauto.com is great 4 cheap parts
@andyass3 it only does it at start up, and there's times when it doesnt even make the noise. i love my beetle but its so hard to work on, every i fix it something else goes wrong. :/
@melyssa217 Nothing to worry about than, i would just leave the noise until your starter eventually does go out. Beetles are somewhat hard to work on because of the small engine compartment and because German cars are usually very advanced in design. The part about something else going wrong is like any car I have ever heard of though, so just bear with it as thats the way they go. In kung foo movies im starting to understand how possessions weigh us down, at least with money to back them up.
@UtubeHyperboleGuy I've never in my life seen an engine that moved "just an inch"...even new cars I've seen move about 3...just depends on the mount and how much give it has, how soft it is...some are made with inch size gaps IN the rubber...
engine mounts are known to go bad on VW, BUT your mounts seem solid. If you haven't seen a bad motor mount I would youtube how to check bad engine mounts and the first one is what it should look like. Yours are just fine, you don't hear any clunking and the engine isn't lifting up. Of coarse your engine will move, you have the brake engaged...
Those mounts (two of them + one dogbone one for torsion) have hydraulic fluid in them. If the mounts are old, they will crack and let the fluid out. They may be good, but also check the one linking by the oil plug-ish area, the dogbone one. All the mounts tend to go bad on V-dubs. Upgrade mounts you must!
Oh, and yeah, that's way too much rocking. Either your dogbone is done, or it's holding but the top two holding the engine and trans are done. Worst case is they're all shot.

@melyssa217 you have a sealed bearing thats low on grease and is going to need replacement in the next 10,000 km. Its only a $20 part so no big deal.

I would check your mounts to see if they are leaking fluids or if they are cracked. Your engine shouldn't move that much, only around an inch.
