What business is it of yours? They are living quietly according to their beliefs and not bothering you. For you to dictate how they should live and dress is as ridiculous as them telling you how to live and dress.

It's because of your way of thinking that peace is often difficult to achieve on this earth.
Why should the year 2011 dictate to any of us how we should lead our lives? and what who gave you the right to judge others on their external appearance?
@123VivaDjazair I gave me the right. It´s that simple. If they think they have the right to abuse animals (and yes, they do, they're known for their horrible puppy mills) then I have the right to say something about them. And I judge if I want to.
I love animals and I wouldn't tolerate any cruelty towards them but let's be serious here, are you suggesting that puppy mills are typical Amish activity?
I am not saying that there aren't some unscrupulous individuals amongst them who do that sort of thing but we must be balanced in our judgment of others and we can't condemn the majority for the acts of a minority.
@123VivaDjazair I´m not saying they´re the only ones, but they´re even known for it where I live, and that´s far from the US. They´ve huge puppy mills with cages on top of eachother. Dogs have to pee and poop on top of the other. It´s disgusting, it´s abuse and it´s beyond me why this isn´t forbidden. Also for a group of people who claim to be so ´good and loving´ this is a weird way to deal with ´god´s´ creatures. Their god, I´m an atheist.
That's very neat! Usually the Amish are very closed in their own world. For example, tree was an Amish family at a zoo, and I held the door for them, and they didn't even make eye contact with me. And another time, I said hello to an Amish and they looked at me for a second, but didn't reply.

The Amish have a TERRIBLE reputation for mistreating and outright ABUSING their hard working animals,..treating them more like farm machinery than living beings. I have deep respect for the Amish and in these videos have always tried to do my best to present the Amish as they really are. We stayed in their home, ate with them and weren't treated as outsiders. Yes their lifestyle takes a little time to get used to if you have lived in a city most of your life. Fresh food from their gardens beats our grocery store any day in freshness and flavor. I found it a thoruoughly enjoyable experience. .
@jes61356 yes Drove a Amish family to there family Reuin and I stayd in the amish home for weekend I really enjoy myself they treated me really good. I watch and learned what family really is all about. thats faith praying. they treated me just like there family. and their floors so shinny and clean. yes they are true friends of mind the sharzet family at finger lakes N>Y good family to know
@rascistgayclown - thats what all animals were used for! with new technology and machinary comes environmental issue - animals can be replaced the environment cant - u call me what to do with a horse if u dont use it for work?? look at it? ride it? then what?? - u use the word craic so ure irish like myself then u shud no what use animals have n no animal gets work to death in this environment
There is good and bad in everybody, but I want to say this about the Amish that I have met, and I have met plenty over the years: The serene Christianity of these peace-loving folks I can only compare with the "living saints" I have met, for example, men or women, usually old folks, who are so kind, so good, that you can feel the Love of God beaming off of them. I feel this many times when visiting monasteries, esp. the strichter and contemplative orders, although holiness is actually not rare.
That's ridiculous. I and the author I worked with on these films stayed with the Amish for 2 weeks. We were not ripped off by them as you put it. But we did have to stay in the attic surrounded by books, no radio, no tv, no newspapers except local Amish news. The food was great though. Your just prejudice about the Amish. I doubt if anything would change that anyway.
@jes61356 i liked ure video i thought it was subtle and not at all intrusive, its true the only way to experience this kind of lifestyle is to live it for awhile - and it was certainly not boring - it was a nice insight that even if someone is different in dress and lifestyle there is still a sense of humour and a willingness to share it -
This is a very boring (to me) video. I am looking for info about the Amish because I want to know more about how they live without electricity and other modern conveniences. The*do* live without them. They have practical, daily knowledge about how to do so. This video does not offer any information about this kind of thing.
Sorry the film bored you. My advice to you is to go live with the Amish and see how it really is for yourself. I lived with them for 2 weeks. Then you will know first had how it is to be without all the modern conveniences that we take for granted.
actually.. living lyk how they do is quite nice... when u think about it.. i'd rather live lyk that than live in a world where everything around you is corrupt and sets a bad influence to people..
whats the craic with these guys i really want to no..
all i can see is hypocrisy..
they live in a modern world, in fact some of the nutters actually own and drive cars and have electricty in there homes, that means they are well and truly part of the modern world, they are living the capitalist american dream.
Then they see themselves as caring yet use animals to do the hard work for them.
so they belive they can work animals to death and justify this by saying it makes life easier for them...
I'm not amish, but let me give everyone here something to think about. There has been a lot of talk lately about a possible terrorist EMP attack, which would instantly knock out all electronic devices & power grids.
Think about it. A couple of government research groups have estimated that up to 85% of our country could be dead within a year of that happening. Not the amish! They would go on without a problem.
In response to the folks who seem to think that the Amish are living a "backwards" or "inferior" lifestyle...
You think that our technological conveniences somehow make our lives superior to the lives of the Amish? When's the last time you saw an Amish guy shoot up a school with an AK? How often do you hear about a drunk Amish person slamming a car into a telephone pole and killing him or herself?
There are upsides and downsides to most lifestyles. "Different" does not mean "inferior."
bein Amish in my perspective is backwards from where we want to go you can worship God but don't live like it's the early 1800's you would just be hurting yourself I feel you can be religious and not use medicine until a point where it is life threatening and you
Have to ask myself am I going to cure myself. Or am I gonna wait around till I just fall over and die? It is not a smart idea to do this or the most pleasing road to take.
amish are lame. they annoy me and their stupid non-rubber wheels tear up the roads tht us taxpayers have to pay for. tht really pisses me off cus their the ones fucking the road up but we have to pay for it. asshole amish.
It's no wonder this country is in such sad shape when such prejudices anainst a specific type of people still exist in the 21st century. I suggest that you get to know the Amish and spend some time with them as I did before you criticize them. You may just find out that they are people just like us.
r u serious?!?! spend some time with them?? ive lived in a fucking amish community all my life. i hang out with amish kids and my opinion of them is still tht their lame. BUY A FUCKING VEHICLE ITS 2010!!!!
I was living with the Amish for about 2 weeks while researching and filming. That was about as much as I could take with no tv or radio. The food was great. But it took a while to get used to going to bed so early and getting up before the sun is up. The people I stayed with were very nice. I have my own car. If you hang out with Amish kids what do they think about it? Are they going to stay Amish after they reach the age to decide?
ok. well the thing im pissed about is that their stupid ass non rubber wheels (because apparently rubber is the devil?) and their metal horseshoes majorly fuck up the roads. and the ppl who drive cars are the ones paying to fix wht the amish fuck up. thank u i know wht im talking about.
Hey tard-o...did you ever think that they pay taxes for schools that they don't use too. They could say the same thing for public schools, and a host of other taxes as well.
You didn't really think that one through too much did you?
@scienceman030 dude u dont even know wht the hell u are talking about i live in an amish community. i went to public elementary school and over half my class was amish.
@benjammin8807 Not all Amish or Mennonites go to public schools. Most prefer their own schools where they can focus on both the basics, and community. That aside, there is much we pay taxes for, yet do not partake in.
@benjammin8807 Gee you must live in Mitchell County, Iowa. You have a problem my friend, and that is the Amish do pay taxes. And, like it or not, our Constitution allows them freedom to practice their religion.
Personally, I have a problem with communities who demand groups to conform to their beliefs. Ask yourself, why did you allow the road to be paved in the first place, knowing Amish and Mennonites do not use rubber tires.
In the first place I didn't interview these people the Author on the Amish did the interviewing. I produced the video. In the second place get over it! The Amish were interviewed with their permission so what is it of your business?
Over the years we have all been lied to by many false Religous Leaders and so called prophets. Many things we have been taught are not even in Scripture and millions have swallowed so many lies by these false leaders. If you are a truth seeker please visit the web site which is displayed in our user name and take the time to read some of the articles... You will be very shocked.
There is a great audio there for you to listen to. You will come away asking many questions.
Islam is the belief that there is only One God, whose proper name is Allah, which means the God. Islam is the same message given to all the prophets, from Adam, Noah, Moses, Abraham, Jesus, and finally to the Prophet Muhammad, the last messenger (peace and blessings be upon them). They all brought the same message: worship only God, and stop worshipping human beings and their ideas.Read the Quran please!

If your post was removed it was due to the bad langauge used. There are many younger people who read this web site and I have a responsibility to them and youtube not to allow such language. if you wish to discuss your life as Amish I have no problem with that but please do not use bad language or the post will be removed.
I did these films with full permission of those in it. They wanted someone who would tell their story as it is. I have done that. The Amish are not actors and I did not tell them to do anything. We documented their daily life.
You make money on these films? What do the actors (the Amish) get in return? Exploit? I deal with them all the time and have never and will never go against their religion, such as taking pictures or videos.
In public, everyone is fair game. If they held their hand up and objected, I would respect that. I have had people take pictures of me on my mule alot of times. I am in public and fair game.
They are completely fine with English folks. i have relatives in Lancaster County PA and when I visit I also stop by and chat to a couple amish farmers about chickens and what not and never are they even distant; they are very kind.
I remember talking to some Amish about the movie "The Village" at a train station...... obviouslt the Amish are not as secluded as the folk in that film. lol
Hi, I don't think that I am copying you as I did the principal pphotography for those Amish programs 14 years ago back in 1995 and own the copyrights to them. I also did a horror feature film. I think that there is room for all kinds of programs as long as they are true to the Amish heritage and culture.
Thank you for posting this - i'm trying to see more about the Amish culture. Yesterday in one of my classes my professor showed us a negatively biased movie about rumspringa (the devil's playground) and she continued with calling it a cult. I feel like i should have said something - while i dont agree with all of their customs and cultural pressures I have a deep respect for their dedication & rich culture. If you have any more vids, especially about rumspringa - i would be very appreciative :)
You could anonymously ask your Professor what she thought the secrete ulterior agenda of Amish are. Cults are deceptive assemblies that recruit. (The Amish do not do this at all to my knowledge.) Please ask her to defend her definition. Look up Cult & Look up Amish & challenge her respectfully, even if you do it anonymously. If you are offensive you will lose the higher ground. She sounds like an Atheist who is trying to subtly play on rebellion & ignorance to equate religion with repression
Amish is a class of people which reside in U.K & USA & are around 350000 in no. They are bearded with no moustache. They dont use any advancement of modern age like electricity, computers T.V or refrigerators etc. Amish plough their fields with bulls & take water for drinking & irrigation from the wells. They pay taxes but dont utilize any advancement in science. No one objects to their life style but why do we object the simple life style of people of Northern areas of Pakistan & Afghanistan?
YV, I don't like to say we're inherently racist, so I'll assume it's because we share our homeland with the Amish, not the inhabitants of the areas of the countries you mention.
No offense taken. You are right they don't like their picture taken but since I worked with an Author they knew who has done many books on them in the past they permitted us to photograph them to tell their story truthfully. I believe that I did that as many Amish have purchased my dvd and watch it at their non Amish friends house.
Wow i can't believe they let you video tape them. I went to Lacaster County and they don't don't like it when people take pictures or video tape them.they don't believe in pictures or recordings of their image. They simply live to serve God. They don't believe in living in the modern world. They like living very simple.
/they don't don't like it when people take pictures or video tape them./
well show me a person who likes being videotaped because of their 'strange' appearance or something like that. no one likes being treated as a zoo inhabitant, IMHO lol
Over 90% of the Amish who leave their communities to explore the world return back to their church. I have total respect for the Amish and their lifestyle although I myself could not live that way. The Amish know how to work together and get things done. This is a skill that our Government including Congress could use.
Well, as for the Amish in PA and OH, I can tell you that their disrespect for animals by mass-producing puppies and not caring for livestock does not earn them any respect in my book. Do you really know the Amish? I grew up around them in DE and many are "tolerant" of the English and some of them hate us. So, before you go giving your respect to an entire group of people, maybe you should look into what they really are.
Such bitterness in your mesaage. The main Amish who don't like the English as we are called are those who have had bad experiences with them and were treated dis-respectfully. Have you really taken the time to speak with them?
Well, I certainly will not say that all of any type of people or relion are bad, but the experience I have had has left me very jaded when it comes to Amish. Since many of them would be just fine without us "bothering" them, oh, except when they want to sell something, I'm fine with ignoring the majority. But, when it comes to puppy mills in the northeast here, I think something like 80% of mills are owns by Amish/menonites. So, I don't care to have a chat with them any time soon.
Yes many of the Amish would be just fine without us. They let me in becasue they knew I would tell their story truthfully. I worked with an Author who has written several books on the Amish. At the time I was doing my films there were no puppy mills I heard of.
I'm in total agreement. I have no respect for people who cruelly abuse animals. To me, that's like abusing children. The work of evil rather than ignorant people.
OK clear this up, Amish are smart, they probably have more money than you or I, and sure as hell when rumspringa they all go back to the church, so I guess they like their way of life.
i guess everything is debatable. There is nothing wrong with hard work. Nor is there with technology. The more you know the better. These people are not dumb by the way. They are very aware of everything that is going on a round them on the outside. But for some reason i just find there life style boring and suppressing. But i guess if your in there shoes you don't feel the same. It all depends upon what you are interested in.
not to be mean every1 i think amish is just bull shit

Have you ever seen malnourished or neglected Amish animals? or perhaps to you animals shouldn't do any work?
Has it occurred to you that Animals like Humans are actually happier and healthier when they are doing physical work?
I'm sorry it's you that I find abnormal and not a community like the Amish who enjoy a style of living that is simple but rewarding and joyful

There are a lot of Amish in Kentucky and it's always nice to learn more about their lifestyles. --The Great American Dollhouse Museum
TheDollhouseMuseum 2 years ago
Firstly you are not welcomed in their town. they don't mix up with you.
Secondly it costs a fortune to stay there for a couple of weeks as they rip you off, for being an outsider. So whats the point? Why bother.
I would rather call them an American version of Taliban.
tp3500 2 years ago
That's ridiculous. I and the author I worked with on these films stayed with the Amish for 2 weeks. We were not ripped off by them as you put it. But we did have to stay in the attic surrounded by books, no radio, no tv, no newspapers except local Amish news. The food was great though. Your just prejudice about the Amish. I doubt if anything would change that anyway.
jes61356 2 years ago 2
@jes61356 i liked ure video i thought it was subtle and not at all intrusive, its true the only way to experience this kind of lifestyle is to live it for awhile - and it was certainly not boring - it was a nice insight that even if someone is different in dress and lifestyle there is still a sense of humour and a willingness to share it -
Kimimus 1 year ago
This is a very boring (to me) video. I am looking for info about the Amish because I want to know more about how they live without electricity and other modern conveniences. The*do* live without them. They have practical, daily knowledge about how to do so. This video does not offer any information about this kind of thing.
RainbowZen999 2 years ago
Sorry the film bored you. My advice to you is to go live with the Amish and see how it really is for yourself. I lived with them for 2 weeks. Then you will know first had how it is to be without all the modern conveniences that we take for granted.

@jes61356 How were you invited to stay with them?

Take the time to speak to the Amish and get to know them and you won't think they are as you put it "nut jobs".
jes61356 2 years ago
whats the craic with these guys i really want to no..
all i can see is hypocrisy..
they live in a modern world, in fact some of the nutters actually own and drive cars and have electricty in there homes, that means they are well and truly part of the modern world, they are living the capitalist american dream.
Then they see themselves as caring yet use animals to do the hard work for them.
so they belive they can work animals to death and justify this by saying it makes life easier for them...
racistgayclown 2 years ago
I'm not amish, but let me give everyone here something to think about. There has been a lot of talk lately about a possible terrorist EMP attack, which would instantly knock out all electronic devices & power grids.
Think about it. A couple of government research groups have estimated that up to 85% of our country could be dead within a year of that happening. Not the amish! They would go on without a problem.
Hardy, simple people. My hat's off to them.
scienceman030 2 years ago

It is not a smart idea to do this or the most pleasing road to take.

amish are lame. they annoy me and their stupid non-rubber wheels tear up the roads tht us taxpayers have to pay for. tht really pisses me off cus their the ones fucking the road up but we have to pay for it. asshole amish.
benjammin8807 2 years ago
It's no wonder this country is in such sad shape when such prejudices anainst a specific type of people still exist in the 21st century. I suggest that you get to know the Amish and spend some time with them as I did before you criticize them. You may just find out that they are people just like us.
jes61356 2 years ago
r u serious?!?! spend some time with them?? ive lived in a fucking amish community all my life. i hang out with amish kids and my opinion of them is still tht their lame. BUY A FUCKING VEHICLE ITS 2010!!!!
benjammin8807 2 years ago
I was living with the Amish for about 2 weeks while researching and filming. That was about as much as I could take with no tv or radio. The food was great. But it took a while to get used to going to bed so early and getting up before the sun is up. The people I stayed with were very nice. I have my own car. If you hang out with Amish kids what do they think about it? Are they going to stay Amish after they reach the age to decide?
jes61356 2 years ago
@benjammin8807 Hate to give you a news flash: The Amish DO pay taxes; property taxes, personal income tax, etc. Average IQ on YouTube: 26.

ok. well the thing im pissed about is that their stupid ass non rubber wheels (because apparently rubber is the devil?) and their metal horseshoes majorly fuck up the roads. and the ppl who drive cars are the ones paying to fix wht the amish fuck up. thank u i know wht im talking about.

Hey tard-o...did you ever think that they pay taxes for schools that they don't use too. They could say the same thing for public schools, and a host of other taxes as well.
You didn't really think that one through too much did you?
scienceman030 2 years ago
@scienceman030 dude u dont even know wht the hell u are talking about i live in an amish community. i went to public elementary school and over half my class was amish.
benjammin8807 2 years ago
@benjammin8807 Not all Amish or Mennonites go to public schools. Most prefer their own schools where they can focus on both the basics, and community. That aside, there is much we pay taxes for, yet do not partake in.
otef434 1 year ago
@benjammin8807 Gee you must live in Mitchell County, Iowa. You have a problem my friend, and that is the Amish do pay taxes. And, like it or not, our Constitution allows them freedom to practice their religion.
Personally, I have a problem with communities who demand groups to conform to their beliefs. Ask yourself, why did you allow the road to be paved in the first place, knowing Amish and Mennonites do not use rubber tires.
I agree Jes61365, quite predjudiced.
otef434 1 year ago
what an idiot and the fact you have no respect with your "interview skills" and to bother these people. You should be ashamed of yourself.
melmattandy 2 years ago
In the first place I didn't interview these people the Author on the Amish did the interviewing. I produced the video. In the second place get over it! The Amish were interviewed with their permission so what is it of your business?
jes61356 2 years ago

I did these films with full permission of those in it. They wanted someone who would tell their story as it is. I have done that. The Amish are not actors and I did not tell them to do anything. We documented their daily life.
jes61356 2 years ago
You make money on these films? What do the actors (the Amish) get in return? Exploit? I deal with them all the time and have never and will never go against their religion, such as taking pictures or videos.

That's too bad. What Professor was that? That's just plain ignorance (like the pun?)
doeeyedgirl 2 years ago

No one objects to their life style but why do we object the simple life style of people of Northern areas of Pakistan & Afghanistan?
yahoovisitor 3 years ago

No offense taken. You are right they don't like their picture taken but since I worked with an Author they knew who has done many books on them in the past they permitted us to photograph them to tell their story truthfully. I believe that I did that as many Amish have purchased my dvd and watch it at their non Amish friends house.

Wow i can't believe they let you video tape them. Over 90% of the Amish who leave their communities to explore the world return back to their church. I have total respect for the Amish and their lifestyle although I myself could not live that way. The Amish know how to work together and get things done. This is a skill that our Government including Congress could use.
jes61356 3 years ago
Well, as for the Amish in PA and OH, I can tell you that their disrespect for animals by mass-producing puppies and not caring for livestock does not earn them any respect in my book. Do you really know the Amish? I grew up around them in DE and many are "tolerant" of the English and some of them hate us. So, before you go giving your respect to an entire group of people, maybe you should look into what they really are.
riversmom333 3 years ago
Such bitterness in your mesaage. The main Amish who don't like the English as we are called are those who have had bad experiences with them and were treated dis-respectfully. Have you really taken the time to speak with them?
jes61356 3 years ago
Well, I certainly will not say that all of any type of people or relion are bad, but the experience I have had has left me very jaded when it comes to Amish. Since many of them would be just fine without us "bothering" them, oh, except when they want to sell something, I'm fine with ignoring the majority. But, when it comes to puppy mills in the northeast here, I think something like 80% of mills are owns by Amish/menonites. So, I don't care to have a chat with them any time soon.
riversmom333 3 years ago
Yes many of the Amish would be just fine without us. They let me in becasue they knew I would tell their story truthfully. I worked with an Author who has written several books on the Amish. At the time I was doing my films there were no puppy mills I heard of.
jes61356 3 years ago
I'm in total agreement. I have no respect for people who cruelly abuse animals. To me, that's like abusing children. The work of evil rather than ignorant people.
oldoz09 3 years ago
