When she collapses you can still hear her voice. Its all a dream that Betty is having, and now that she knows this, the illusion will be impossibe to maintain. Being a David lynch fim though, its completely open to interpretation.
this movie is one of the best... this scene is one of the best in the movie, and it has all the sense in the hole damn world... lynch is a genius and this is pure art pure art intelligent commited and over the edge art... and because of that... Lynch obviously knows what he has done! and obviously theres a plot in this movie... and more than that... theres a break of common plot stories, theres a new way of telling and making a plot... which is one of the good things in this movie...
I find it hilarious how people complain 'It makes no sense!' and assert that anyone who finds anything of worth in the film is pretentious, making it up, or both. Well guess what: I find this an exceedingly, almost excruciatingly resonant and profound film. I have watched it about 10 times. I never tire of it. Do I get from it what David Lynch intended? Probably not. Am I 'missing the point?' No. David Lynch himself will say that whatever a viewer gets from one of his films is what is important.
For all you people trying to make 'sense' of this film...just stop. There is no plot! Its a mobius strip..nothing leads to more nothing! Lynch is the only person who will ever know what it means.. and most likely it doesnt have any meaning..even to Lynch!! If it had any concret truths somebody would have figured it out by now..you guys act like Lynch created the universe or something.
The best thing about this scene is that you DON'T need to read Freud, Jung, Hemingway, Keats, Lennon, or Hustler to know what is going on. It Is different for each viewer. The ONE underlying theme is that once it gets into your head, (whoever YOU may be), it will haunt you, excite you, and delight you like nothing else. I stand by those words, and the fact that this is the spookiest, most wonderful scene EVER.
SPOILER: Whether or not Lynch pretends to know what he's created, read between the lines. This is the scene where Betty/Diane's soul is taken and she understands - after she's already dead - how she's betrayed "Rita." The scenes following Club Silencio reveal the reality of Betty/Diane's homicide, suicide and other choices.
for all the haters of this movie who insist it is confusing nonsense : this scene is the key to the mystery. Between an innocent dream and harsh reality is Crying (in spanish). ...there is no band...
Whats so utterly incredible about this movie is how we the audience think its building towards its conclusion, to resolution.
But David Lynch literally flips the entire film on its head. Everything we thought was going on is reversed. We are left dazzed and totally at the mercy of Lynch as he submits us to one of the most powerful and chilling final sequences of all time.
I remember watching this movie and at the end I had no idea what was going on. It confused the hell out of me. I hope I'm not the only one who felt that way :)
Interestingly when I first watched with a friend of mine, we almost directly jumped to the right solution. Many people who watched that movie many times told me that´s very unusual and the film normally confuses the shit out of the most watchers. ^^ I really dont know why we got it that fast (Well, it was the only Lynch movie I understood the first time. ^^
Put that ego back in it's box you douche. Lynch had never even stated what the film is about in it's entirety. There are so many interpretations out there. What exactly do you 'get'. And how did you 'understand it'?
You don´t need to flame me. And I wasn´t stating that because I´m proud of myself because of that. I was just surprised myself, that that happened.
And I think the solution is:
SPOILER
The first two hours are only the dream of Betty/Diane, only the last part is real. I´m pretty positive this is the "right" solution" (Of course Lynch never stated what is right, he never does). Lynch also gave 10 hints, for example (Imho the most important) that it´s important what happens in Club Silencio. .
There it is shown that even if something looks real, it doesn´t have to be. That also goes for the first two hours of the film.
And I didn´t say I got the film in it´s entirety, I only got the dream-thing. Of course I would never be so arrogant to say I got all the symbolism in the film. And although there are many different interpretations, most of Lynch´s films have one solution that fits pretty perfectly.
And I think the dream-solution is the one for Mulholland Dr. I wasn´t intending to picture myself as superior to other watchers, I merely wanted to express my own amazement about pretty much "getting" a Lynch-movie on the first watch. Sorry if you got it that way
Someone mentioned that it looked like Annie, Laura and James from the Twin Peaks series and the Fire Walk With Me movie, more brilliance from David Lynch. :)
Best scene in the film, hands down.

The film isn't so hard to understand on a basic level if you've read some Freud.
