@Ebrown506 Hello, I work for the Victoria & Albert museum in London, UK. I am working on a project relating to Black British Culture in conjunction with the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton. I have a photograph here by Charlie Phillips that I think has your Great-Grandmother in it but I would like some confirmation. I am sure you would enjoy seeing a photo from here (only?) UK tour so perhaps we can get in touch more privately if you are interested. Thanks, Gavin.
@gubmintcheeze I'm not that familiar with youtube but I will ask my grandfather to email his pics to me and try my best. The pics we have are few but most of them have never been seen before by the world so it should be nice :-)
@wiggidyc I don't know who wrote the bios, but they never mentioned her not having children either. My great grandmother (Big Maybelle) had one child when she was a young teen. That was before anyone knew who she was. She went her whole pregnancy unaware that she was pregnant. My granny was raised by her grandparents while her mother was out trying to make a name for herself. .
"Jazz On a Summer's Day" is, without doubt, the greatest jazz concert documentary ever filmed. Aside from the fantastic Big Maybelle, the roster included Gerry Mulligan, George Shearing, Thelonius Monk, Dinah Washington, Chuck Berry (!), Louis Armstrong, Anita O'Day and (closing the show after midnight on Sunday morning) Mahalia Jackson. The film is a joy to behold!
@TheTerryGene You're absolutely right, Terry. The director was a photographer by profession, not really a "film guy" and it is so evident in his beautiful camera work. Personally, my favorite is the opening performance, Jimmy Guiffre ... after seeing that I became obsessed with him and tried to find as much live stuff as possible by him, but none of it is even close to being as hot and great as that performance.
" Jumpin' Jéosophat ! " : heureusement que de tels films ont été préservés pour témoigner de l'etendue du talent de Big Maybelle; woaw ! comment elle te booste le classique de Chick Corea !

whoever love this lady you got to hear her song called Pitiful in my opinion one of the greatest vocal performances of all time. She is a killer who takes no prisoners.
Totally unbelievable. Two folks I wish I could have seen live. Big Maybelle and Big Joe Turner. She is phenomenal. Her track, You'll Be Sorry, cuts to the bone.
Love this! Used to hear her on the R&B stations in NYC in the '60s. Damn, what a great shouter AND she could rip you apart with a ballad. Long gone, but not forgotten!
@kyle41894 Yes, this is the only performance by Big Maybelle in 'Jazz on a Summer's Day'. I like to think whoever filmed this had enough sense to film her entire set, but so far nothing else from this show by her has surfaced.
@Ebrown814 your great grandmother seems to be quite a lovely lady, if u wanted to find more clips of her honey i would google/or youtube her name honey....
@Ebrown814 - Can you post some of those photos, perhaps as a collage with some of the music? Never been anyone like her. She deserves more exposure, and recognition.
@1wiggidyc can you post any of her pics on her fan site. Love this lady. she's one of those singers that cant be mimiced.....thats what separates good singers from great ones and she was truly great.

I just fainted from the fierceness. ....
Now that I"ve revived, I'd like to suggest that all other jazz/blues vocalists just throw in the towel after this performance.
