  • how many sounds are you using?.. i mean how many layers can you use from the tenori one with the virus? did u set every sound like channel 1 another to channel 2.. etc?

  • @rolilla tenori on*

  • @rolilla The Tenori On always sends 1 channel for each layer. So layer 1 gets sent on MIDI channel 1, layer 2 on MIDI channel 2, etc. for a total of 16 layers / channels. In this case, the Virus Snow is limited to 4 channels so everything you are hearing in this video is made using the first 4 layers of the Tenori On sending to the Snow. See a similar question from fender207. Does that make sense?

  • @polishbroadcast thanks.. i asked because I have both of them.. the tenori on.. and the virus ti snow.. and i knew you could use just 4 channels... what a shame.... i would liked to use more layers with the virus ti snow.. ive heard u can use more with other virus devices...

  • @rolilla You could still send the remaining channels 5-16 to other synths if you have them. Yes: all the other Virii are 16 part mulitimbral. You can still make a big racket with the Snow.

  • Beautiful i cant wait to get my acces virus snow

  • dude, can I ask you a thing?

I accept your silence as a yes. :) how can you control different sounds from the sinth in each tenori on layer? I own a tenori since 2007 but still didn't get how to do it...it appears I can use it only on a single midi channel.

  • @fender207 Each layer on the Tenori-On is sent on a different MIDI channel. You need a synth capable of having multiple different sounds at the same time. This is called multitimbrality. So if you have a synth that is multitimbral, in my case the Virus Snow, you can make each MIDI channel on the synth play a different patch / sound. Some examples of multitimbral synths are the Virus, Blofeld, most DSI synths, etc. Message me if that doesn't make sense.

  • @polishbroadcast I've got a monomachine, and yes it's multitimbral.. I broke my midi adapter so I haven't got the possibility to try it on the mono yet, but I also neva succeed to use it on the computer, I use logic and I couldn't set properly any midi channel on it, even the mono has a midi controller set on different midi channels, but it appears logic put everything on the ame midi channel even if I set different midi channels on each midi track on the mono & logic... any suggestions?

  • @fender207 Ah yes. MIDI channels and Logic. I tried that years ago and gave up out of frustration. Now it looks like it is much easier. Google "Logic different midi channels" and you should get a message board post with step by step instructions. PM me if you get stuck. Looks pretty simple now!

  • awesome - like Aphex ambient

  • @intrsoul say... are the sounds getting cut-off by the voice limitation in some places? If so, that's too bad, but I suppose you could just dump the audio tracks to your computer and keep layering

  • @intrsoul Yeah there is some note stealing going on. It is worse in other videos. The Snow gets overloaded pretty easily with all the effects and everything going on. It is still a powerful little bugger though. I kinda like how it forces me to be economical. I just re-bought a Virus Polar so expect some more tracks (with less note-stealing) soon.

  • could you do the same thing with the larger desktop Virus TI?

  • @23Henrich See my video "Tenori-On w/ Virus TI Desktop - 1A"

  • great video.. can I ask something of you to do for your next clip?

Can you use the atomiser on your tenorion, while doing a live performance?

That would be a mad act!! :-)

  • Crazy. I was just reading about what could be done with the atomizer. I don't think You can use the synth engine and atomizer at the same time. Since I am using the Snow as the synth here I would have to run another source into it, but I have an idea i've been wanting to try for awhile in the same vein, so stay tuned.

  • @polishbroadcast i second the atomizer with tenori. on problem i could see if the pitch and mod wheel feature on the atomizer. either way im excited to see it. could help me make my decision.

  • Brilliant. Great sounds

  • Yo, I really like that man. The quality is really good for the isight and 1/8" input... Keep it up..

  • EXTRA 5/5 *****

  • Man, this video is just so awesome. I think i gonna buy the tenori-on. Just to cool.

    Thanks alot!

  • The beginning sounds like a pissed off camel..

    BUT I LIKE IT :P

  • I think you just titled the song. :)

  • wow no way !!! dude that would be awesome .. Track 3 : Pissed Off Camel...

hahahaha thats bomb dude ... let me know if you upload these :D

  • Pissed off Camel vs Keyboard Cat? (in the second section, note meow and 80's keys)

I wish upon an LED star for a Tenori. :-)

  • @polishbroadcast hahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Wow what a team!

  • Wonderfull!

  • beatiful

I'm still waiting for my snow, I will try it with emx-1 and/or my laptop I think

  • I just uploaded a basic demo of using it with ESX... seems good so far!

  • thats exactly what i search, but i don't want any Yamaha device in my studio....and yeah finaly someone who make good music!

  • What exactly did you search for? I'm not a huge Yamaha fan or anything but the Tenori On is really from Toshio Iwai. He developed it with some help with Yamaha engineers but it was mostly him and Yu Nishibori (or so i've read). I don't think it resembles any Yamaha intrument except maybe in some of the ROM sounds, but if you are sequencing external gear, that isn't an issue. Even so, the internal sounds are really nice and come alive through a good delay or reverb.

  • thanx 4 the answer...i want a matrix like sequencer,to quick programm some midi-patterns...i think the tenori-on do this job but It's only because i don't like the name Yamaha shown under my gear :-) i will wait for some new device meanwhile i will Step-Sequencing with Ableton and NI Maschine............I have a TI SNOW too!

    greetings from Snowy Switzerland ;--)

  • As a stand-alone, the tenori on is about your only option. The Yamaha name is on the bottom back of the instrument and is engraved small. you would never see it and neither would your audience.

You'll wait for a very long time if you want something like the TO but not the TO. The APC40 or the Monome are similar but you need a computer to use them, and that defeats the purpose of using stand-alone hardware in the first place. Good luck on your quest and make good tunes in the meantime.

  • Genius.

So - why doesn't someone invent a purely midi-sequencing Tenorion with no sounds for exactly this purpose?

  • Thanks very much. I think that pretty much exists in the monome, but it does require a PC still. The TO is such a niche product, no sounds would make it an even smaller niche. Since the sequencer is so limited, i can't imagine power users loving it too much if that is all it did. That being said, i wouldn't not buy it.

  • Man, this is where the rubber meets the road. Five stars for:

    a) showing off some cool gear

    b) thinking a little further outside the box with the setup

    c) coming up with something entertaining to listen to, beyond just noodling.

  • Thanks so much for the kind words. I hate noodling as well! I'm a big fan of patterns and melody ... aka music. :)

The virus is so dynamic it works really well with something as rigid as the Tenori-On.

    Thanks again.

  • Wow! Really great work combining these two instruments! :D

I'm loving my new Virus Snow, it's getting alot of live use these days.

  • thanks! The Virus TI does sound pretty great but i really wish it had just a few more voices of polyphony. Some of the cool effects on this example are because of note stealing though. Send me a message if you have examples of stuff you are doing.
