@Dhoylandrules84 I sprayed it on with the gravity fed paint gun and an air compressor. Some of the detailing and hard to reach places were painted by my wife. I can't use a brush to save my life! lol
POR-15 is great but has no UV protection in it. You either have to paint the POR15 while it's still tacky with an oil based paint like Rustoleum or else use the Eastwood product that is similar but does contain UV protectants.
@gumpydoood You're exactly right. My job was just the underside, so luckily I didn't really need to do it. After almost 4 years, it still looks fresh!
@gallagher711 Brother - you better start saving now cause by the time you have a DL, there won't be any more buses left to buy. I bought mine about 20 years ago for 1600 bucks (and that was kind of a lot back then). Anyway, really just wrote to wish you luck and was impressed at how someone so young can appreciate the beauty of a VW split window bus. Good for you!
e d F o x here (bare metal turbo double cab owner with red int ) ANYWAY, thanks for sharing. Wish I did a video doc like yours when I did my bare metal project. I hear you .. a LOT of hours. I used acrylic enamel clear, when it was still legal in California, and it's held up pretty good-about 12 years now. I experimented with POR 15 clear a few years ago on the driver's door but noticed rust coming through about a year after.
@bradgotch I heard myself saying that too.. lol! Probably from sniffing paint. It's a radio that was put in at the factory for an old Porche. It's not from a dealership. I researched it more after I made this video. Currently it's in my friends sweet 53' ragtop beetle here in Japan.
nice VW btw i got a question i got Por 15 can and painted it on bare metal but i got carried away and new to this. i didn't know about it can it be painted on regular paint or only bare metal? am i safe if i accidentally put on paint?
i used por 15 on an entire vehicle. whole shell. strip disced to bare metal, and gave it 3 coates. lightl sanded my austin champ with 800, and primed with tie coat primer. then i used a polyurephane high build primer. looks great and just needs topcoat. por 15 sprays on nice n thin.
yeah, POR 15 is really great. so is metal ready. i decided to paint the bottom of my 74. i did the wheel wells and some of the engine compartment, but i'm not doing all of it.
@catchawave01 I can get it here in Japan too, so I'm sure they sell it in the UK. Even if it costs more there, get it anyways. You get what you pay for with this stuff. My bus looks fresh and clean on the underside even after almost 4 years!
how hard is it to put disc brakes on .i own a 59.mastercylinder cant you run four wheel by bending the extra tube then the break lite? why the zinc? how is the bullit thats advertised on samba/ nice work
@videowatchdog9 I have front CSP disc brakes and stock brake drums in the rear. You HAVE TO HAVE a dual master cylinder for that. The fluid pressures are different. If you have all four disc brakes, maybe a 59' MC would work... but you should double check on that one. You can buy new 67' Bus MC's. They're the only split bus year with a dual MC. Much much safer. My 67' MC fits a little funny around the pan that covers the bottom of the front end cause the MC is a little bigger.
@onehipdawg My video camera broke about 3 years ago. I still don't have a new one, but I'm hoping to get one soon. So many people want to see it! I didn't expect to get so many views on YouTube! Have patience with me, bro...
You could start now. Begin with a nice 1600 engine block, get some books and learn to rebuild it. By the time you are 16, you can have a nice fresh engine. Then you will have the option of buying one running (preferred) or without engine. But by simply rebuilding one, you will learn a lot of the skills you will need to keep one on the road.
@gumpydoood no way Gallagher. I'd say try to buy the bus now and worry about the motor later. Those are a dime a dozen. The longer you wait to get a bus, the harder it's going to be to be able to afford one. That's just my opinion but opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.
@edfoxdotcom I agree. I threw most of my money into the bus and good quality/original parts. I can always go back and restore the bus anytime. But parts are getting to be a pain to find. Too expensive. Heck, I have fiberglass bumpers cause I refuse to pay over $1000 for old crappy ones.
Hey could you make a video of your finished bus? I would love to see it! I mean because some day I will need those advices for taking care of my bug. You know what they say "there is nothing better than doing it yourself". Great video, great project.
I have a video kinda done. I have to figure a way to download it on my incompatable Japanese computer. Have patience, young Padawan, a video is coming soon......
Buy POR-15 in quarts too. If you buy a gallon, you will have to use the whole thing right away, or you will never be able to get through the hard skim covering again. I tried chisels and knives and finally had to o[en a hole in the bottom of the can.
I used sanding paper by hand and wood chisels. Yes! Wood chisels get rid of the gunk awesomely! Then I used POR-15`s Marine Clean, then Metal Ready, then painted it.
hey man,..your bus is coming out great,..you did a nice job spraying the belly with por-15. when you sprayed it, did you dilute it at all, or did you simply pour it strait from the can and spray??..also, instead of using marine clean and metal ready, im using ospho prior to por 15 my car...it does the same thing to prep the metal....lots of sanding and scraping to prep...lol!!
I have the bus completed! Everything is done and it drives so sweet through the mountains here in Gifu, Japan! Right now, we are putting in the custom camer kit in the back! I will post a new video very soon! Get ready ya'll!
They make a POR-15 primer, I believe. You should check out their website. It's pretty detailed with info. If you you use this stuff, don't even worry about how much it costs... it is totally worth it!
phew japan yeah you aint kiddin, im workin on my VW westie (bus camper) but im sure you knew that, lol its a 76,right now im sandblasting and body prep for body work and rust damage replacement and prep for paint, then come engine work we... but i think i might just get a mechanic.
Deadbeat mechanic...stupid mechanic, great work but why use such condescending language? Dont like mechanics? Japan is not DIY place due to lack of space. the lack of rust is great for the age.
Are you going to cut the windows in? I'm finishing my bus in Japan which is one of the most expensive countries in the world. I speak basic Japanese, it`s the rainy season, I don`t have a garage, and I`m currently unemployed. The money I made was on a low income lousy enlisted military paycheck..... and I`m married with two kids. I`m not in debt either. Beat that :D
Been working on it since last August, but technically I`ve only had it at my house for 3 months. It was sitting in a deadbeat mechanic`s shop for a while and it was on ship for a while.
hi you sure are determined is your project finished yet if not got any more vids of your progress cant wait to it finished judging by the work you have put in to the stuff you dont see it shold be pretty good plz reply
Thanks for the support! I'm almost done with the underside paint. This weekend I'm gonna put on the front disc brakes, new brake lines, transaxle, and the engine. Busy is the word. I have to get it ready to ship to Japan cause I'm moving there with my wife in 3 weeks! I had delays with a stupid mechanic for 4 months who didn't do anything for me. If you want something done, do it yourself. I'll make another video early next week. Talk to you soon,
how many quarts did it take to coat the entire bottom? I'm getting ready to do this myself
