  • Terrific version but I am stil partial to Richard Barrett and the Chantels.

  • This is such an amazing find. Harry Jerolman was my next door neighbor. I remember going to many practices and following them to local gigs on the weekend. They often played at the Sherri Shack in Branford. I will never forget the day that Harry got his Hammond B-12. What a flood of great memories.

  • My favorite versions: Richard Barrett & the Chantels and Tony Rice on Princeton (with both a male and female vocal group). I find this a bit "overheated."

  • I like the version that Richard Barrett sings with the Shirelles.

  • @DickAllen4HOF Richard Barrett and the Chantels. Richie did three different versions, two w/ the Chantels & one w/ the Chantels with a male group added, that's the best version besides the Chosen few.

  • richard, it just keeps getting better

  • Very nice job and I can see the Rascals take on Barrets tune-truthfully the Rascals were a "bridge" group too in many ways-Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore is one of those songs that bridged the old sound with the (then) new sound(soul/garage) which the Rascals became famous for.

  • This group was by far such an under rated band.I mean, they didn't get all the promo + most of all the $ backing that they deserved. We all know Freddy Paris & the FIVE Satins were the kings of that genre`. Yes,my dream came true. I wish there was a way to THANK the CHOSEN FEW. WHERE R THEY NOW?

  • Hi, I can't believe I'm hearing this-it's a great. I remember them playing on SUN. nights @St. Mary's C.Y.O. in NEW HAVEN.I was at Notre Dame then-I admired them & dreamed of doing what they were doing.

  • ahhhhh, Brilliant !!!!

  • @kjboogie Thank you Ken!

  • DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHO THE DRUMMER IS ?

  • @wilkiehouse1

The drummer and lead singer is Bobby White

  • Ret Chief and old friend Jim Criscola told me about this posting which blew me away. I was in the Chosen Few and also played with Bobby White in the Sonics, New Haven, CT. It was very cool to read Harry's brother Dwight's comments he was always at rehersals.

Thanks dowopper51 for finding and posting Summer's Love. If it helps, we never considered ourselves a doowop band but rather tried to put a "Rascal" sound to a Richie Barrets classic. Thanks again.

  • Saw them play this at a prom in New Haven way back when - they were good

  • GREAT!

  • I like this version. But I love Richard Barretts more.

  • Are you aware there are 3 different versions of Richie Barrett's? I like the one on Cracker Jack label, that's the good version, the one on GONE not so good, I like this version by the Chosen Few better. Then again it's in the ears of the beholder!

  • @dowopper51 Yes I heard them all. But I love Richard Barretts more. Cause his voice is beautiful and I love the ending of Summers Love when he sings "ohh ohhh" i love that part. But everyone has different opinons. Do you have the song "some other guy" by Richard Barrett?

  • "Some Other Guy" is too much like a Ray Charles tune, just my opinion, If you want it I can send it, let me know. "I'm Yours" is another one of my Barrett FAVs, I posted that a year or so ago, check it out if you never heard it.

  • @dowopper51 yeah cool!!! that would be so awesome if you could send me that song. I love that song. My favorite Richard Barrett song is "All Is Forgiven" I can listen to that song all day. He just has that beautiful voice. This year I been finding so many Richard Barrett songs. I been listening to Doo Wop for about 2 years now. And I love it. I love Rare Doo Wop more though. And Richard Barrett is my favorite singer. I'm more into Rare Doo Wop.

  • No problem, send me a private message with your email. I tried to post the Craker Jack of Summer's Love version many times many different ways, it keeps getting blocked. At least they allowed me to post the label on the last attempt I made & just block the sound.

  • cool!! I'll do that.yeah i looked through you videos and saw that that song had no audio.

  • While producing one of our East Haven Police Oldies Shows, I had the good fortune of listening to the Few practice for their reunion in a garage in Guilford. They played later that year at the show and it was like being a teenager all over again. What a show they put on thanks to Chief James Criscuolo who was a close friend of one of the groups members. Glad the music is still around.

  • Thank you my friend for your input! What year was that, do you know if they are still performing?

  • Wow, ahhhhhh, I love this one. I think Richard Barrett did this also. They are both nice.

    Thanks,

    ken

  • Hi Ken, Barrett did do a version with the Chantels. I did post it over a year ago but they knocked it off. I'm going to try again next time I post. Sorry for the loooong delayed response!

  • @kjboogie Yeah this is Richard Barretts song.

  • wow!...thanks for this one!!!

  • Your very welcome my friend!

  • Brillant!!

  • Very much so, thank you!

  • Beautiful!!

  • OH YES! Thank you!

  • I actually have a copy of that book stashed away somewhere. I believe Bobby White was with The Sonics before the Few. Unless the Few recorded on Sonic label, insufficient brain cells functioning to remember now! Shocked and dismayed to hear Bobby is gone... we were friends a long time ago.

  • Book form only! I searched it & was hoping perhaps someone had a PDF of the book on the net. I have to check ebay, maybe I'll get lucky. I don't no of Bobby being with the Sonics, hmm? I did find the members were, Gerry Roslie, Andy & Larry Parypa, Rob Lind, & Bob Bennett.

  • How cool to find this! Harry Jerolmon was my big brother. He and Bobby White have passed on. This song got a lot of airplay on AM radio in New Haven. They released Hey Joe a short time later, those were good times!

  • So sorry for loss of your brother, I've lived outside CT since 1982, please tell me when Bobby passed, and anything else you can share. I have other friends (musicians) who would like to know, as well. Thks

  • most beautiful song ever...

  • Oh, not arguement from me, sure is pretty.

  • what a discovery, my day is complete. its gonna be in my head all day at work tomorrow, dowopper51.......you've done it again!!!!

  • Nice isn't it! Well, keep enjoying them! I also posted a nice version by Richard Barrett with the Chantels backing him, you may want to check it out?

  • really feeling this song heard it a few times on the radio loved it never knew who they were oldie but goodie real music

  • Ah, it's beautiful!

  • This is The Chosen Few out of New Haven Connecticut, c. 1968. Mike Helske (bass), Bobby White(drums). Other names escape me now. They were the innovators of the "New Haven Sound" (Freddie Paris & The Restless Hearts, The Five Satins, etc.); they were a wildly popular club band throughout CT. Only a few songs were ever recorded, tho.

Bobby White sings this song, he did most of the lead vocals, his voice was very similar to Eddie Brigati (Young Rascals).

More details when I can remember them!

  • FANTASTIC! Thanks so much for the info, I knew very little about it. I am sure others will also find yout info very interesting, I know I do! Thanks again.

  • Let me help your memory. Sumer's Love was recorded by Bobby White(Lead & Drums) Tony Maru (Guitar)Jimmy Oconner (guitar) Harry Jerolman (keyboards) and Ginter Schatz (bass) Mike Helske replaced Ginter on bass when he went in the military.Hope this helps. There's a book out there somewhere about new haven local bands during that time. the guy who wrote that did not even get the names right.

  • Hi bassbull0546, actually he did get the names correct. Bobby White, drums & lead, Mike Helske (bass). He couldn't remember the rest of the group names. Thank you for filling in the rest of the group members. I really have to look for the book you mentioned, thanks for the input!

  • Actually..The book is called "The New Haven Sound 1946-1976" by Paul Lepri

Its kind of a roster of all bands that played or recorded in the area with a number of photos

  • THANKS!!!!! I'm working on it now!!!!!

  • What a beautiful song. Who is, "The Chosen Few". The band members, the record label is unknown to me also?. Did this group have any more songs to hear?. Thank you for posting.

  • Less than 500? ,,,MAN!

    YOU'VE GOT A RARE ONE!

  • Dowopper51,

I believe this is the the record I e-mailed you about the other day. Remember, I said I was listening to Sirius radio and they were playing a slow dreamy song. However, I didn't catch the name or artist. Thank you for posting this song. Please take care and have a wonderful Tuesday.

  • Hi PJDooWop, I had a feeling it was, but couldn't find anything on. I had this on ebay less than a year ago and it didn't do anything which really surprised me. Also, I didn't have any info on it at the time. Collecting for 46 years it's the only copy I've ever seen and it's near mint to boot. I'm not sure which version I like the best though, Richard Barret's or this one. I'll post Barret's and let the crowd decide? Thanks 4 the heads up!

  • Nice!!

  • Thanks!

  • This is a VERY RARE record from New Haven, CT. I met the owner of the label... They pressed less than 500 of this.
