I think the basic explanation of her lobotomy is not that Joe was a saint and wanted to spare her trauma. People knew at the time it was a drastic step to calm an uncontrollable person, and it was to prevent her continuing down a road of being increasingly frustrated, acting-out, and probably pregnant. It was his way of removing a potentially damaging player from the family stage. I don't believe Rose Kennedy ever got over it, and I don't believe Joe Kennedy did not know what he was doing.

No, Rosemary was not lobotomized because she was artistic. By the beginning of WWII she was becoming violent and wandering out at night. Joe wanted to spare her the emotional trama that she was going through. The doctors told him that she could live without the violence and mental lapses and Joe went ahead with the surgery before really investigating it. They had not really ever done it on mentally challenged people like Rosemary, and it went bad. She was placed in St. Coletta's in Wisconsin.
