Note to fat bloke with the beard: Jessica Hynes and Simon Pegg were the co-creators. Edgar Wright was the director. I know she's only a woman but pay her some respect you ignorant arse.
Spaced went the way of one of the other great british sitcom Fawlty Towers, only 2 series but left it on a high. Thats always the best time to leave something rather than 8 series later with repeating gags and jokes.
I'm not gonna slag off the USA here. There's too much of it on YouTube (anti-British too). But i do want to know why American tv/movie execs always have to (or would like to) remake foreign tv shows and movies? Why not just show the originals? They are invariably better anyway. Can you imagine if we remade Friends to suit out tastes? Or Seinfeld? Anyway, it's not just the humour that makes a show, it's the cast. The cast of Friends (the chemistry between them) make the show. Same for Spaced.
@TKMSeznam12 - I don't necessary agree with you, and I have to say that you should not compare the two. English /European have a totally different sense of humour. For eg Arrested Development and Two and a Half Man started at the same time AD got cancelled whereas 2&aHM is still on. For me its a shocking mistery but presume it was the victim of viewing statistics. And that has nothing to do with what you have commented :D just wanted to say it.
Woooah! 1999 Jessica Stevenson was cute but 2008 Jessica Hines is fucking stunning, damn the years have been good to her :) She can make me cannabis stew any time :)
Spaced will never be as appreciated in America as it is in Britain, same as Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. The humour is British, the cast are predominately British comedians. They have a right to like it of course, but it won't be as appreciated.
America is one of the most comedic nations on earth. Their comedy is different- both of our nations are capable of creating different things: we're just lucky enough to understand each others' humour.
If you're talking about the scrapped Spaced US remake, then I totally agree- it would've been shit. :D
@MrSunnyp45 As an american, I just wanna thank you for your honesty. Now, all we got is Katt Williams.. my FUCKING god!!! Where are you, Chappelle?!?!?!
Is it just me, or do Jess and Simon look great together standing side by side? I know they're both married to other people, but they just look like they have great chemistry together. Brilliant show, I love it soo much! and Edgar seems to be getting hotter and hotter!! :D
Indeed, there is a strong on-screen chemistry b'twn Pegg and Stevenson-Hynes. Actually, I wish Daisy and Tim would have gotten together in the final episode! I enjoyed the flirtation and sexual tension throughout the two seasons but would have enjoyed a "happier" ending for them together since they were so accepting and fond of each other, and well, compatible. : )
@castratephilanderers Type 'Spaced - the end?' into youtube, check the video that has the crew out side the house it was based around. At the end Tim and Daisy come to the door in charactor as a couple with a kid. It was part of a documentary together and great ending.
Am i the only one that thinks Jessica (Daisy) looks radically different then she did in the show? I mean, I know its been 10 years but she's almost unrecognizable.
Dont you dare remake space for America! It's far too good to ever be remade & if America dont get it, that's their loss....
Why does everything have to be remade for America, it's kind of patronizing American people is'nt it? In Britain we dont need everything to be remade for us. We either like it or we dont.....
This annoys me so much! "Co-creators Pegg & Wright", and "co-star Hynes"? WTF?? Jess co-created it with Simon! The two of them wrote the freaking thing together. Not Edgar. She gets pushed out of the picture so often, it really bugs the crap out of me.
Listened to the Shaun of the Dead commentary, when the gorgeous Jess appears in her cameo they gloss over it, making no reference to their previous co-opertive work. Methinks they've fallen out. Spaced was only directed by EW. SP and JH wrote the bloody lines!
@debzbuzz It just goes to show... Research doesn't get in the way of just making up facts... Jess rocks. I wish she had a bigger role in Shaun of the Dead, but then again she did save them all by bringing the army back to the pub.
Oi, Jessica Stevenson-Hynes was PREGNANT during the shooting of the first season. Did that make her not "as nice"?!? I agree with a couple posters above, Jessica does NOT receive the credit she is due for co-creating and co-writing the storylines and scripts for the entire two seasons of Spaced. : (
There is no way that this show would be any good without the original cast. I love British humor! As an American, I agree that Americanizing it would be WRONG. The people controlling our entertainment industry are not that sharp...
I don't understand why they feel the need to make remakes of everything into low-quality American rubbish. What's wrong with the original versions? Are they too moronic to understand a non-American accent or something?
Oh, brilliant way to get your bitter, ignorant little opinion out regarding Americans and their ability to "understand" a foreign accent, dipshit. You see, we DO understand it, as ridiculous as you sound; remakes of any kind aren't up to us, the American public, but to high-ups who have an extreme want of money and no sense of originality.
yes i really do wish that the few british people who do it would stop bitching about our u.s. brothers, they obviously dont know any, i know plenty, and there fucking good people!

I always thought they should have done an Amber spin-off of this. just lots of shots of her stamping off screen without saying anything. would've been great.
I've seen every episode many times and still come back for more...absolute genious!! The other characters are really funny too especially Brian. My favourite episode is when they all go Raving (season one).......

ahh this dvd had commentaries by kevin smith, quentin tarantino AND diablo cody. I would love to stick those overrated, hack bastards in an air-tight room and pump in Zyklon B. Death to quirk.
Yeah, well I would argue that the Office couldn't have been replicated, either. I'm American and I think the US version SUCKS compared to the original. "Absolute rubbish" as the British would say. The US version reminds me of that kid in the class who tries to be funny by just repeating the jokes already made by the genuinely funny kid!
yeah, but it's just not right. i mean, WE'RE the ones who made the show popular. Edgar Wright is just becoming an American-whore. Hot Fuzz got a better DVD aswell.
Not all Americans. But I get your meaning. I am a huge fan of Jessica Hynes. She is one of my favorite writers. She doesn't get enough credit for her talent.
All I can figure is these people who think it's the Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright show haven't actually seen it yet. They'll learn! Oh yes, they'll learn!

ahh this dvd had commentaries by kevin smith, quentin tarantino AND diablo cody.

I got my DVD when it became available on July 21st. I really enjoy watching it without the graininess of youtube. Thanks Simon, Jessica, and Edgar!

i don't think it's fair that America got a better DVD boxset that the UK got
Hughezy 3 years ago
perhaps, but we've been waiting for years to get a copy. We could have gotten it in another region, but then again, so can you.
JadesFire77 3 years ago
yeah, but it's just not right. i mean, WE'RE the ones who made the show popular. Edgar Wright is just becoming an American-whore. Hot Fuzz got a better DVD aswell.
Hughezy 3 years ago
Hey man, if I can watch the region 2 DVDs on a region free player and be grateful, you can always do the same with the region 1 discs.
Plus, it's our job as Americans to take everything cool from the UK and Europe and give it a high-budget repackaging. It's just what we do.

Don't complain they are not even out in Canada and I doubt they will be anytime soon.

What gets me is American's never credit Jessica as the co-creator/writer, she's always "co-star"
marthavell 3 years ago 15
Not all Americans. But I get your meaning. I am a huge fan of Jessica Hynes. She is one of my favorite writers. She doesn't get enough credit for her talent.

Tim: ...I'd end up looking like a twat in a jumpsuit
Daisy: Don't say that word, Tim. It's a word that hates women.
Tim: What, twat?
Daisy: No, jumpsuit.

All I can figure is these people who think it's the Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright show haven't actually seen it yet. They'll learn! Oh yes, they'll learn!
