I don’t think he’s a “self-centred lunatic”; that implies character flaw when in truth he is self-assured – wholly different because it doesn’t insinuate that he is a bad person. He has a general idea as to what he wants and is quite confident in his own thoughts (even at this time of interview). He may have been (as in past) considered outrageous but much of what he says makes sense. So neither self-centred nor lunacy apply to Bowie. Well articulated artist is what he is.
If being in tune with your inner self at all cost and act upon your inner beliefs is waht you call being self centered...I personnaly think that calling a person lunatic based on your limited view is self centered itself..Come a point where taking care of oneself is taking care of others...Lets remember that a guy likeJesus himself was seen as a Lunaticmanipulator by the political element of his time..IFwe take the officialstory as golden..seewhat i mean?If thinking outside the box is lunatic...
Oh so you don't personally know him? You're just making a comment based seeing clips of interviews? I bet he has read plenty of "important" books. Just because he tried to make a small political comment via a music video, (something he rarely does), doesn't mean he doesn't know much about it the subject. I would say his efforts to highlight the poverty problem, suggest he is not as self centered a person as you seem to think.
It's not that he has made a statement but the nature or slant of his statement tells me a lot. You must remember that this was the 80s and many musicians were on the band wagon of various social causes. It was the thing to do if you were commercially inclined -- which he was at this point.

She's enamored of him, he's a self centered lunatic who doesn't read enough important books -- books that answer the harsh question of poverty -- and whole thing is a flattering up of Bowie during his worse musical period .
I said enough important books. It's not the quantity of books but the quality of books that matters. He is one of the most self centred people I know -- most artists are.
My point of view is that you can't say how he really is, because you have never met him. And I have never met him as well. So I can't know either. I find it rude that you call him a self centered lunatic.
If you follow somebodies career -- watch their interviews, see them live, buy their music, read lyrics, etc. -- you do get a sense of who they are. And, yes, he is a self-centered lunatic... and very charismatic and charming as far as lunatics go.
Why are you following his career and buying his music and seeing him live, if you think he's a self centered lunatic? That just seems hipocritical. So you like his work and admire him in some way but are prepared to make presumptuous comments about him personally?
Rarely do we like the totality of a person. There is always something, even parts our selves, that we don't care for. Bowie has made some great music & art but he is still a self centred lunatic -- as are most artists. It comes with the job.
OMG, you met Bowie and Zappa, the greatest artists on earth.
Does life still have a thrill to you - after these encounters ?

How presumptuous of you to think he may nt have read enough books about poverty. And how wrong to say he is self centered.

This is a very poor comment. Probably David Bowie has read more books than you. One shouldn't judge people without even knowing them!

You do get to know people by what they say and when and how they say it. Bowie is no different.
