Some people don't realize that most fireballs make a mushroom cloud.

I've seen a mushroom cloud in firecracker smoke.

However, in a nuke there's a different reason that it makes a mushroom cloud. In other stuff, it draws air in the center and makes a donut. In a nuke, the cloud hits a change in the atmosphere and moves outward.

The heat increased the pressure in the tank, so eventually the weakened steel failed, the liquid flash boiled and vented from the tank. Then the surface fire ignited the vapor (the drop in pressure and boiling actually cooled it below the ignition point). At that point, mushroom cloud, break out the marshmallows.
