HAHA, if it hadn't been for Arabs in the 7th century invading and conquering Persia, Eastern Rome, Egypt and later Greece, and were kept ignorant of modern civilizations advancements and achievements, the Bedouins would have remained in a culture devoid of all enlightenment and cultural progression.
Their "progression" was from outside cultures and people, very VERY few were Arabs...
oh wow. You really are an idiot for posting this. Ironic. Funny how a period of three hundred years where people were allowed to come into Baghdad with all kinds of ideas and religions, caused a scientific revolution. Let's see this happen today.
How Ironic. You replaced the most import part of the video with the same kind of nonsense that ended the period of scientific progress in the Islamic world.
Rational faith? There's no such thing. Faith, by definition OPPOSES rationality. It's belief without evidence. Btw, in this conference dr Tyson doesn't try to support islam or any other faithas a source of science, but quite the opposite, but to point out how the brightest minds resourced to faith when they couldn't explain stuff beyond their understanding. Not surprising to find this edit of the conference in a religious propaganda bullshit video.
@hellhammerz666 Actually... he was supporting religion. His point was that you shouldn't tell people to stop having a Faith just because of science. And this isn't much of an edit, just a quote.
@BeyCuber No he's not. The poster is totally disregarding the purpose of this argument. He used many scientists who, at the edge of their limits, turned to religion to try and find a solution for their questions. The whole point he tried to make was that religion limits further questioning, hence, preventing progress of investigation. There's a longer video containing this conference. Neil doesn't support religion, at least not when it meddles in science, where it does NOT belong.
@BeyCuber It is pretty much the same as quotemining, because he's deliberately extracting a small part of the video where he seems to support religion to try and back up a bogus argument about religion positively affecting scientific development, when nobody could be more opposed to this kind of dishonest rethoric than Neil himself. At some point, he mentioned 85% of the scientific elite didn't believe in gods. He then asked, why is the remaining number not 0%? That is what his point was.
@BeyCuber Btw, what i mean by "edit" is that he simply picked the short piece that was convenient for him, , while completely missing the point he tried to make by setting not only islam, but other religious beliefs as part of an argument against religion trying to get into science, where i repeat, it does NOT belong. It was a long argument against intelligent design, as a matter of fact.
lol @ the end part. Tyson will be offended by the crap you put at the end since it goes against the point he was making. way to edit videos in the narrative you want to present them. you should work for Fox news.
The help of god is axiomatic within the Islamic faith, its not an issue of muslims being lazy, its just an issue of not being able to have control over every single factor that could determine your succes. Our prophet taught us to trust in God, but tie the camel first, a reference to the fact that an untied camel would roam free in the desert, and the trust of God alone should not be solicited in stopping it from doing so. Natural law should be satisfied, then god shud be trusted. Peace
why can't you muslims just do things by yourselves? if you want help, that's just being lazy. after all, according to you guys, isn't this life a "test"?
Typical theist dishonesty ... If anyone cares to hear Tyson's true point, go watch the full presentation. In it, he nails Islam for the retardant on society that it is ...
most of the replies are based on a mix of ignorance and an irrational need to express hatred to other religion just because it is "other religion" and people can't comprehend the fact that they may be wrong.
so most of the comments revolved around blind denial and insults
GUYS >>>> READ BEFORE REPLYING PLEASE ... YOU EMBARRASS YOURSELVES
The country of Spain translates more of the world's literature every year than the entirety of the Arabic (read, Islamic) countries have since the ninth century.
Of the three monotheisms, Islam stands out as the particularly backward, Intellectually stultifying, and scientifically ignorant one of the bunch. At least the ignorance of chistianity and judaism in their earlier centuries can be attributed to the overall lack of scientific knowledge of those times.
You wouldn't attribute the discoveries of Galileo, Kepler or Newton to Christianity, what business has Islam or any religion with science? Just because achievements are made in a religious culture does not mean the religion caused them.
In fact if you look at history, scientific discoveries have been often labeled heresy and controversial by religion. Scientist of the past may have been religious, but they did not shy from the truth in the face of fundamentalism and they were punished for it.
Kinda funny that the advance of science in the Islamic world ended when the theocratic clergy took control, and the advance of science in the western world started with the decline of the power of the church.
Basically the person who is hosting this video DOESN'T want you to learn is that VERY SOON after the golden age in the Arab and Persian world the suffocation of Religion came down like a fucking hammer and pretty much wrecked any and all advances in Science for a thousand years. Not much chance for learning jack and shit in Medicine when it is forbidden to draw the human body. GG stupid fucking muslim fags. GG religion in general.
Great to hear Neil de Grasse Tyson explaining about Islamic Golden Age. If the Mongols never attacked Islamic Empire and took over, the world might have progress even more. Like he said, tolerance is the key of success for each civilization. Just like United States of America. The Soviet collapsed because they never have tolerance. The same goes with Christendom during the Dark Ages. So maybe people should stop arguing now and try to build a better future regardless of differences that we have
Look at earth from a far and see it as a blue dot and you'll quickly realize that your religion is a brainwashing tool to have idiots like you kill others with the same dumb ass ideas. All religious people are either uneducated, brainwashed or straight up stupid, there's no other explonation.
during hinduism in ancient india alot of scientific advances had been made and even the first surgeries were performed ... 0 was invented in india .. so called 'arabic' numerals were invented in india but were carried across the oceans by arab merchants hence the name arab numerals .. they're not even called arab numerals..they are actually called indo-arab numerals..algebra & basic arithmetic were also developed in india...ppl need to know this..i am not making this up either .. look it up ..
Religion is a cancer to science. As the Arab world embraced islam their golden age ended and their people degenerated into violent savages. We see the same thing going on in America now. As more Americans start rejecting science and start embracing religion, our golden age will also end and Americans will degenerate into violent savages.
If muslims want to bring back their golden age, ironically, they will have to reject islam.
@IslamicGoldenAge So ...name some Islamic Nobel prize holders. (with gods help indeed, that will bring about more knowlage and understanding of the universe ...prayer ...why didn't I think of that!)
Seriously this golden age is not due to islam. Its because the people living in that region where accepting of new ideas. After this age they went back to there book burnings and reverted to nothing more then lunatics in a sandbox with to much time on there hands. And as a second point this period wasn't even silver in comparison to what the west is enjoying now. We went from wood huts to physics, to (molecular)biology, to E=mc², to walking on the moon to computers in 3 eons. Thats a golden age!
So you are trying to Claim that this is something of an Islamic positive, however as clearly stated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, during this period, Baghdad was a cultural melting point. This advancement stopped as the Muslims forced everybody else out...strange that? Also the things are called Arabic only from a European/American perspective, a lot of things things have different names back in Asia and often refer back to India, some Islamic "discovers" also were taken from the Library of Alexandra.
Islam, like any other theistic, dogmatic religion, will bring nothing but misery to its adherents. Scientific Enquiry cares not about dogma nor religion. Improvement comes only through scientific enquiry.
I think there is a diffrence beetween islamic science and islamic scienticts doing science. It is just as silly as calling todays science for athistic science just because it´s mainly athists in the scientific elite. But I wish It would be honest to call modern science for athistic science because modern science kicks ass!
How ignorant, he never said anything about Islam, he said that the Arabs at the time liked knowledge, i just love how you feed of thousand year old honor still today..
Sure you did bring much knowledge once upon a time, but now you bring bloodthirst, i think the world misses the old Arabs..
The ones that were capable of being curious about reality :D
Perhaps one day Islam will regain some scientific stature. But..... it will do so only by abandoning its current destructive, divisive, racist, suicidal, ethnocentric, and bigoted approach to literally EVERYTHING that goes on in the middle east. And its worth mentioning that abandoning all of these things would have nothing to do with Islam itself but letting go of all the horrific ideas that have come out of it.
I do agree that what I read of Al-Ghazali was incongruous with what Dr. Tyson says about him and to my knowledge it's the only thing I've ever heard him say that I felt was inaccurate. That being said, you can't deny that the Muslims' intellectual golden age did come to an end (for whatever the reasons may be, do you have a better answer?) and they haven't recovered since.
Radical ass holes like you kill little school girls because they didn't have their little faces covered? you shoot them in the back in Basra!!!?? Spray Acid in their faces??, blow yourselves's up?? What Fucking Sicko's, all Religions too, but islam the most violent and monkey like, even over Niger's too... Funny Islam never created anything period but Hatred it's self!!, like Electricity, cars, space flight computer's etc.. A bunch of 3rd world Extremist ass holes is all you are. FECES.
Wow 300 years, that is a relatively short period. It is too bad this age had to end, the human race, all religions, creeds, nationalities need a new golden age without the stifiling stupidity of conservative religious thought.
Props to the Islamic world for keeping Greek Knowledge alive though.
Look in the description-box, the video-poster is apparently an apologetic...
He says that Degrasse Tyson was wrong about al-gazhali, but gives no reason himself for why then, the islamic people stopped discovering, if not for al-ghazali.
He wasn't wrong about Al Ghazali. Al Ghazali was not a muslim. He was a sufi. He destroyed the muslims by introducing sufic jurisprudence methods. Refer to Islam in History and Society by Malek Bennabi, as well as Wiki: Al Ghazali - Influence
i would suggest actually doing a little research. hell just google the wives of muhammad and see what you come up with or you could even go specific and type did muhammad marry a child
wow really? took me less than 2 minutes to come up with this and to check the source
Aisha was six or seven years old when betrothed to Muhammad. She stayed in her parents' home until the age of nine, when the marriage was consummated in Medina
@Nibielari I would never acknowledge such a claim of me being wrong. Muhammad married a woman, and you would be insulting aisha with whatever implication you'd be making.
@faro0485 so your proud of the fact that you would never acknowledge being wrong?
sorry but i believe muhammad insulted aisha, well he not only insulted her but raped her at the tender age of 9. its a shame there are people like you around who not only allow it to happen but defend it.
@faro0485 no wonder you believe in nonsense then. i say you still have a lot to learn about critical thinking and the what not. argument from authority means nothing. it doesn't matter who says an idea, the idea is weighed on its own strengths.
@faro0485 nice strawman but just because you add the same way to what i was saying and then attack that part of the argument is rather silly. extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. if you say your name is Tim it really doesn't matter if it is or not as well it would be easy to prove so who cares to ask for ID. but if you say you have a fire breathing dragon in your garage well then your going to need to prove that shit with very concrete evidence.
@Nibielari Why do you believe straw men are nice? They're just straw. They're empty. If what I was saying was nice, perhaps it was something good and not a straw man.
Wrong! Extrodinary claims require understanding and time. Vile and hurtful and claims from untrustworthy sources require for us to research them ourSELVES!
If we told others to do the work, no one would love science and research.
I don't say my name is Tim, so I'm not going to venture into considering that case.
@faro0485 sorry but you fail again. i love how you just ignore the fact that i called you out for adding things to what i said and then attacking what i didn't say.
as well how do you expect to understand something without evidence?
@faro0485 so then now that you are agreeing with me, want to explain why you said i was wrong about evidence being needed for a claim to be studied or are you just going to keep twisting words around and saying i am wrong?
@Nibielari I was speaking from your position. You're supposed to get the evidence. Of course you are wrong if you believe I had said you were wrong. I'm sure I never said such a thing before, but since you said it first... I'll just assume that your thoughts have you question yourself as well.
@faro0485 so you saying i am wrong in previous comments is not you saying i am wrong. your a silly silly person keep trolling thou if thats how you get your kicks
@faro0485 again you just spout off nonsense. nothing you have said to me has anything to do with quantum mechanics. as well i should just let you know that regardless of what you think you don't understand quantum mechanics.
@Nibielari Lol, don't be silly. He married 4 women, which is more then you ever will :3. Anyways, she wasn't exactly a child. People at that time reached maturity earlier then they do now. So... a 12 year old girl would be like a 16-18 year old girl today.
The uploader of this video is a complete moron. I've read some of Al-Ghazalis work (very little), and he did discourage mathematics. It didn't say "mathematics is the work of the devil" in the English translation but it did say that mathematics is an evil or something like that. Isn't evil associated with the devil in Islam?
(I wouldn't be surprised if the Arabic originally says that "mathematics is the work of the devil" and the translator purposely mistranslated it).
Neil says that the out come of Al Ghazali is the idea that "mathematics is the work of the devil", when the muslims practically invented the idea of using mathematics for science.
Incorrect, muslims didn't start to sit on their heads. Because the technological advancement kept on going through into the 15th century. The height of al-ghazali's sufism occurred in the 16th century, when secularism replaced islam in those lands.
I know next to nothing about Al-Ghazali but it would be best, if you're trying to counter his arguments, to actually leave in the part you're refuting instead of having us take your word for it.
"Before Islam the Arabs were nothing. After it, they and other Muslims led civilization."
I'd advise you to pick an history book and read the information as it is not as you see it.
You have no idea what you're talking about.Have you even bothered to reaserch the summerian civilization?
How can you be so indocrinated by your faith that you're willing to call over 4000 years of fascinating evolution in the Mesopotamiam area "nothing"?The arabs we're everything before islam.
Summerian civilization was several hundreds if not a couple of centuries before. Nothing before islam is as regards to anything like it. Nothing like it was there in the history of civilization. You can refer to the Justinian plague to see why that would be doubly true.
Science and mathematics flourished in that time strictly because of the openness of that society during that time. They flourished NOT because of Islam, but IN SPITE OF Islam. And that era of advancement was ultimately SNUFFED OUT BY ISLAM as it grew into all aspects of society, including scientific research, like a cancer.
And not one iota of scientific advancement has been achieved in that region since then, while Islam's ugly tentacles have grown longer and thicker. Coincidence?
Oh yes, the old, tired and lame claim that they lived under the Islamic rule, therefore any achievement must have been due to Islam. This is like saying the Renaissance happened at the height of the power of the Catholic Church, therefore it must have taken place because of it.
Hopefully you know enough history to understand that the Renaissance occurred in direct opposition to and despite the best efforts of the Catholic Church. If not, Look up Copernicus, Giordano Bruno and Galileo.
@kossmikham YOU ARE WRONG. Islam made people think about these things...Christians were burning women alive while Muslims were flourishing. Check the facts before you open your mouth.
@gosillygirl Islam didn't make 'people think' about anything. It prevented free thought, which is why the 'golden age of Islam' ceased to exist. Yes, Christians did many horrible things, however, secular ideology put the 'Reins on religion' and made it more 'socially tame'. Islamic countries are the worst places on Earth to live. And as far as the maltreatment of women is convened, well Islam is the current champion when it comes to the oppression of women, and you're a fool to state otherwise...
what Islamic and nonIslamic countries have you been to to conclude "they are the worst places to live"? What statistics do you have? Check up rates of suicide, murder, rape, drug abuse, alchoholism, adultery, and other crimes from reliable sources. You will find Muslim countries fare best.
And if you check statistic like economic growth, scientific output, GDP, etc. You will find some Muslim majority countries that do pretty well like Malaysia and Turkey, and that those that do poorly include a vast array of countries of different religions.
But you are biased with a deep hatred of Islam because of what you see on TV. I invite you to read the Quran yourself.
@IslamicGoldenAge What's the penalty for Apostasy in Islam? That's right, 'death'. If the penalty is death for leaving the faith, it's anything but peaceful. I also like how you 'quote mined' Neil Degrasse Tyson in your vid, you know that after your vid ends, he goes on to state that Islam was a type of cancer that the culture never recovered from. Naming Al-Ghazali as the reason for it's demise
@IslamicGoldenAge . For future reference, if you're going to quote mine someone using a video on You Tube, make sure people can't see the actual video that you're quote mining. It'll make you BS look that much more legit...
@IslamicGoldenAge You mean countries like Saudi Arabia, or Afghanistan? Are you serious?Yes,that's why in my home of Canada, we are overflowing with immigrates from these countries(and others). We have even had terrorist threats in my country of Canada,so please dispense with the BS that Islam is a 'religion of peace'.I know many Muslims, and they all say that Canada is one of the best places to live.In fact, the best places to live are the more atheist countries, which a recent study illustrated.
What a ridiculous assertion and vitriol that simply illustrates the ignorance of your fanatical ilk. The Arabs before Islam were nothing, a bunch of desert nomads. After Islam, they led civilization and were the home to massive scientific advancements for several centuries. And yet you have to audacity to say it happened in spite of Islam?
@IslamicGoldenAge The only reason they had an advanced society was thru invading Europe, and pillaging great cities and collecting their books and writings of classical knowledge. The Ancient Greeks discovered a lot of things that the Arabs simply expanded on after discovering their writings. It has nothing to do with Islam.
@IslamicGoldenAge it's pretty simple. throughout history, whenever adherence to religious texts was preferred over reason and rationality, whatever "knowledge" was gained during those periods was primarily centered understanding the prevalent religion of that time and not on anything useful to outsiders. typically these periods are known as "dark" or "lost" ages for a reason, because the knowledge gained during those periods, if any, was not relevant outside of that sphere, ie. not useful.
Actually, that's not true. During the Golden Age in the Middle East, religion stayed out of the way of scholarly work. It was during this period that science flourished. Religion by itself had little to do with it, its the authoritarian imposition of it that kills scientific inquiry.
Just take Judaism and Islam. Both equally superstitious, but have you counted the number of Nobel prize winners on either side? This is despite an enormous numbers disadvantage!
@amrfathyegy - Scholars at that time were scholars of everything. A quick review of noted scholars of the period confirm this. They studied everything. The fact is religious organizations had a monopoly on funds. The gov. & the religion were one & the same...That's who commissioned the work. If you wanted to be a scholar, they were the only game in town. It was the same in Europe with Xtianity ...
It did happen in spite of Islam. Islam is retarded, unintelligent bullshit that helps nobody do anything.
Name ANYTHING in the universe that one needs Islam to achieve?
It could be that some Muslims are geniuses, they are people after all. But the raving, embarrassing, stupid insanity that is the Koran, contains NOT A SINGLE INSIGHT that couldn't have come from some random 7th century loser.
Disagree? Name a single idea that could have only come from Islam.
I made some pretty harsh accusations, and your only counter was spelling? That seems hilariously weak, ESPECIALLY since my very harsh accusations contained a CHALLENGE that had nothing to do with spelling.
And by the way, Koran is a very common spelling. It is also known as Qu'ran and Kuran, and according to wiki, also Coran and al-Qu'ran. So I can defeat your "point" can you defeat mine? Or was dismissal on the grounds of spelling all you had to offer?
@amrfathyegy - Bullshit, any study will show you the more religious a society is today, the more backward it is. The more fundamental, the more retarded. It's a demostative FACT ...
I see what he is saying, but the part about "Arabic" numerals, and his lack of proper explanation is just bad. "Arabic" numerals is a misnomer, it was the Indians who gave birth to our decimal system AND the zero. he is not giving the proper people their credit.
So basically what I am saying is that at the end of your video you say one thing but the reality is something different. The western world is leaps and bounds ahead of the East in terms of science and mathematics. That is because people trust what science teaches them, even if it goes against doctrine and God, which as Victor Stenger puts it, isn't even a viable scientific theory, it is a failed hypothesis according to the Qur'an, or the Bible, or the Torah. Falsifiable, and falsified.
The Arabic people should abandon their beliefs of a God and take their place once again as the protectors of philosophy and regain their worthiness in the world as scientists and mathematicans. HIstory has shown that unfettered, the Arab world could again be rich with culture and science instead of being marginalized by the rest of the world as primitive in their silly beliefs. When you ignore truth you lose respect. There may or may not be a God but I promise you it is not the one in the Quran.
Not only can you posit a Creator for the creator, you can do so ad infinitum. Just as you say God is everything, you automatically multiply it by 2. Because God must be contained within God meaning he is layered ad infinitum. It is impossible to ration this out using logic, and that is because it is simply not true. The only means of intelligence occuring in our universe is through the process of evolution. If you wonder why Islam has done nothing in terms of science lately, look to the beliefs.
Think long and hard before you answer, reading my previous statement. If everything is controlled by an omnipotent God, how is it possible for our lives to have meaning. By stating that God is responsible for everything you render yourself as completely insignificant, nothing more than the errant thoughts of a deity. Not to mention that nowhere in nature do we find intelligence outside of a living brain, nowhere. The idea of substance duality is wrong, so say the studies of brain patients.
If everything is caused by God, then we are meaningless. Choices are moot. God predetermined me to be be atheist and thus damned me to hell from birth. It simply makes no sense, that is until you say, these ideas are manmade and false, then it all makes sense, in a crystal clear way. Say hello to Quantum Causality, wherein only probability lies. It will free your mind from archaic ideas such as God and predetrminism which renders life meaningless.
I get so used to hearing Christians defend their faith that I forget that other religions try to defend theirs as well. It's kind of refreshing. Still silly. But refreshing.
If violators still exist, how can it said to be "working"?
The penal code of Islam attempts only to enforce Islamic dogma. It provides harsh punishment for some things that most non-Muslims would not consider to be a crime. In fairness, both Christian and Jewish penal codes are equally biased to their own dogma.
I love how you cut off his points at the end - fearful much? and Muslims were the one that ended scientific inquiry preferring blood shed instead. how about you education yourself? Oh, and imagine, right now, Muhammad getting his dick sucked by Allah.
@yogurtking He even omitted the correction that, in fact, the numerals came originally from hindus, arabs were popularizers and used them intensively.
o yes... the current Muslim force in the Middle East will certainly bring about a new Golden Era.... right after it gets out of the sand and dirt where they make IEDs and chant Allah's name while slaughtering people.
right after they stop being the power center for international terrorism and Big Business Oil Companies which are fucking everything up...
right, right after that goes away.... not seeing it anytime soon tho i'm afraid... not looking too good -.-....
Doesn't it hurt that the most complex math was developed by Christians and atheists? Algebra is easy...and so is star naming...If Newton were alive today he would most likely be atheist or agnostic.
Your comment shows deep prejudice and immaturity. Even when one of your own leaders praises the great Muslim accomplishments, you stick your head in the sand.
Science and math builds on the work of the work before it, and the Europeans would have had to start from scratch had it not been for Islamic Science that paved the way. Algebra is "easy" today because you are used to it, but from scratch, it is a paradigm shift for humanity.
as for Newton, please read up on him. He was a firm believer in God, because of the beauty of the solar system that he studied. Sadly some people see the amazing world around them, yet arrogantly deny God.
Moreover, Newton denied the trinity and the divinity of Jesus as heretical blasphemy to God. So he believed in one God who has no son or equal, basically the creed of Islam.
In fact if Newton was presented with Islam without the prejudice that plagued Europe, he would have accepted it
You mean if Newton was brainwashed...Why in the world would anyone base their life around a book written by ignorant people before the introduction of modern science? All you have is your biased view of the world that picks and choses from science based on your feelings. Your whole life is a waste...Newton denied the trinity as heretical blasphemy because he knew that no man-made religion has the answers. Nobody really knows whats out there.
Actually Newton criticized Islam as a religion who only spread through military conquest, as opposed to Christianity that spread by divine assistance. He also disapproved of the fact how muslims worship Muhammed, who he calls the founder of the Islamic Empire.
yes poet, that is my point. Newton never learned about Islam as it is, only through European myths leftover from the crusades centuries before. Muslims don't Worship Muhammad, we worship God. Christianity actually spread by the sword more than any other religion, as soon as the Christians had power, that is all they did.
Penal code of Islam is practical and it works. You may not like it, but that is only due to the subjective cultural values you grew up with.
Wow, you and every other muslim on here missed the entire point of tyson's lecture. Go watch the full video and open your eyes.......develope some critical thinking skills and lift yourself out of theistic nonsense.
i am not a muslim but i was particulary amazed by the accomplismenst that came about in the time period indicated by Dr.tyson. i think the reason for these advancements is due to the separation of religious ideology from scientific progress and the mergence of the two led to the decline of this intellectual period.
That is not true, but I can understand why you would think that coming from the western background where the Church has opposed science.
Islam never had that problem. The same scientists and astronomers were religious scholars who taught Islam and wrote about it. In fact, their motivation for many of their advances was religious.
E.g. The prophet said "God has not sent down a disease except that He sent down the it's cure". So people sought this cure
Islamic, after looking at your profile, I can see that you have a bone to pick with christians plus you love to point out their shortcomings. They have gone through their blood soaked history, and AT LEAST try to live with others. I am sure they could come up with blaming other cultures and colonialism to excuse their bad behavior, but the truth is, in spite of that, it seems science is growing in that environment. The more science advances, the more religion wanes. That is just the truth.
bim you missed the point of my profile. The more science advances, the more Christianity wanes. It is the exact opposite with Islam. Islamic civilization became the world leader within 100 years of the advent of Islam, and before that the Arabs were nothing. Islam fueled the progress.
Islam brought, without doubt, a revolutionary change to the Arabian peninsula. However, as I know you might disagree, the main ideas of Islam truly bear the marks of being 1400 year old scriptures.
The teachings are very much outdated. Just look at the penal code of the Sharia. Cut of the hand of a thief? That is just barbaric, especially when we know that thiefs can change and become better people if they are given the right opportunities.
Statistics show 80% of thieves reoffend. Prison made them even deeper into gang culture with murderers, rapists and drug dealers.
If you implement the Sharia, nobody would dare steal (the ruling doesn't apply during times of famine, or for stealing to feed your family, or for stealing something left unprotected)
Atheism is irrational - basically everything came about blindly. It has not objective morality, and no purpose, just relative values that shift with whims and desires.
The system of punishment we have today is far from perfect. It is a failed combination of punishment and rehabilitasion.
I promise you, of you take a thief, rehabilitate him, educate him and give him a job, he will become a productive member of society. That is the truly humane and moral way of dealing with criminals of theft.
As for punishment of crimes to scare criminals, how do you explain that in the U.S, where the states with capital punishment also have higher murder rates?
Answer: None of the above. They both sound rediculous and irrational.
Aren't you an atheist for Thor, Zeus, Saturn, Mithra, etc.? Likewise, we rationally deny fairies, leprechauns, genies, unicorns, the loch ness monster.
All I do is go one god further. My atheism is only just ONE more than yours. Sounds pretty rational to me.
@IslamicGoldenAge Rejecting superstition and speculation in favor of skeptical inquiry is not irrational.
Atheism is not a claim of righteousness! It is just a claim that you need to back your shit up before you proclaim that your god is real or that your prophecies are true or that your morals are righteous.
I don't think that killing children for apostasy is very moral.
Look at the modern countries which have the most atheists. Sweden, Norway, France etc. These are all the best countries to live in according to nearly every statistic. Atheism isn't irrational, you might just not understand it.
@thepoet82 You forget that the origin of the change of "compensation to the victim" sort of legislation was brought about by the norman-arab culture, which had in it islamic doctrines of law. This culture led to the Magna Carta. You may refer to "King John Shariah" (google it) as well.
You stopped short of the next part of Dr. Tyson's presentation where he describes why this fertile period ended.
Partially responsible was an Islamic Imam Hamid al-Ghazali. Out of his work you get the philosophy that mathematics is the work of the devil. That, combined with other islamic philosophies, caused the intellectual foundations of that time collapsed and have not recovered since.
It may be that early Islam helped in this fertile period, but what it became certainly did not.
Also, Islam appears to benefit from technology because you have backwards Islamic theocracies slowly making use of the technological acheivements of the rest of the world and improving their situations by them.
I'm not trying to bash on Islam, but Islam, like most other religions (including Christianity) is ultimately a philsophy that feeds on ignorance to produce unquestonable certainties by fiat and dogma. Theocracy gives great power to the religious leaders to stifle any form of dissent.
Read my link, do your own research on Al-Ghazali and the Islamic Golden Age instead of blindly trusting Tyson. AlGhazali was only opposed to mixing philosophy and theology - not science in the real practical world.
But Some people just despise religion, and try to find any parallel with the anti-science history of the Church.
I don't believe that Dr Tyson was trying to say that al-Ghazali himself stated this idea, but that the idea emerged among Islam partially due to his works.
The middle east was an intellectual hotspot for a few centuries, but that all came crashing down eventually, as religious superstition took over. Some areas over there are still stuck in the dark ages in some ways, with some of the barbaric and highly unjust laws inspired by Islamic law.
Not Muslims but mankind will be a beacon of light, when mankind went to Egypt to learn it was a beacon for makind. Whenever all the races get together and work in peace their is great knowledge passed around , that is why America is technologically superior to other countries, it is because we have all the races thinking on the same problems just as in the pass, dont try and attribute this to a religion.

Not surprising to find this edit of the conference in a religious propaganda bullshit video.
hellhammerz666 6 months ago
@hellhammerz666 Actually... he was supporting religion. His point was that you shouldn't tell people to stop having a Faith just because of science. And this isn't much of an edit, just a quote.
BeyCuber 6 months ago
@BeyCuber No he's not. The poster is totally disregarding the purpose of this argument. He used many scientists who, at the edge of their limits, turned to religion to try and find a solution for their questions. The whole point he tried to make was that religion limits further questioning, hence, preventing progress of investigation. There's a longer video containing this conference. Neil doesn't support religion, at least not when it meddles in science, where it does NOT belong.
hellhammerz666 6 months ago
@BeyCuber It is pretty much the same as quotemining, because he's deliberately extracting a small part of the video where he seems to support religion to try and back up a bogus argument about religion positively affecting scientific development, when nobody could be more opposed to this kind of dishonest rethoric than Neil himself. At some point, he mentioned 85% of the scientific elite didn't believe in gods. He then asked, why is the remaining number not 0%? That is what his point was.
hellhammerz666 6 months ago
@BeyCuber Btw, what i mean by "edit" is that he simply picked the short piece that was convenient for him, , while completely missing the point he tried to make by setting not only islam, but other religious beliefs as part of an argument against religion trying to get into science, where i repeat, it does NOT belong. It was a long argument against intelligent design, as a matter of fact.
hellhammerz666 6 months ago

The help of god is axiomatic within the Islamic faith, its not an issue of muslims being lazy, its just an issue of not being able to have control over every single factor that could determine your succes. Our prophet taught us to trust in God, but tie the camel first, a reference to the fact that an untied camel would roam free in the desert, and the trust of God alone should not be solicited in stopping it from doing so. Natural law should be satisfied, then god shud be trusted. Peace

Helghastl33t 1 year ago
So you are trying to Claim that this is something of an Islamic positive, however as clearly stated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, during this period, Baghdad was a cultural melting point. This advancement stopped as the Muslims forced everybody else out...strange that? Also the things are called Arabic only from a European/American perspective, a lot of things things have different names back in Asia and often refer back to India, some Islamic "discovers" also were taken from the Library of Alexandra.

Perhaps one day Islam will regain some scientific stature. But..... it will do so only by abandoning its current destructive, divisive, racist, suicidal, ethnocentric, and bigoted approach to literally EVERYTHING that goes on in the middle east. And its worth mentioning that abandoning all of these things would have nothing to do with Islam itself but letting go of all the horrific ideas that have come out of it.

faro0485 1 year ago
@faro0485 nice strawman but just because you add the same way to what i was saying and then attack that part of the argument is rather silly. extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. if you say your name is Tim it really doesn't matter if it is or not as well it would be easy to prove so who cares to ask for ID. but if you say you have a fire breathing dragon in your garage well then your going to need to prove that shit with very concrete evidence.
Nibielari 1 year ago
@Nibielari Why do you believe straw men are nice? They're just straw. They're empty. If what I was saying was nice, perhaps it was something good and not a straw man.
Wrong! Extrodinary claims require understanding and time. Vile and hurtful and claims from untrustworthy sources require for us to research them ourSELVES!
If we told others to do the work, no one would love science and research.
I don't say my name is Tim, so I'm not going to venture into considering that case.

The society of that time was ruled by muslims. It was the caliph that promoted research. It was the people that pracitced islam.

IslamicGoldenAge 11 months ago
@IslamicGoldenAge The only reason they had an advanced society was thru invading Europe, and pillaging great cities and collecting their books and writings of classical knowledge. The Ancient Greeks discovered a lot of things that the Arabs simply expanded on after discovering their writings. It has nothing to do with Islam.
DevoutSkeptic 10 months ago
@IslamicGoldenAge it's pretty simple. throughout history, whenever adherence to religious texts was preferred over reason and rationality, whatever "knowledge" was gained during those periods was primarily centered understanding the prevalent religion of that time and not on anything useful to outsiders. typically these periods are known as "dark" or "lost" ages for a reason, because the knowledge gained during those periods, if any, was not relevant outside of that sphere, ie. not useful.
playadominical 10 months ago
@IslamicGoldenAge

I see what he is saying, but the part about "Arabic" numerals, and his lack of proper explanation is just bad. "Arabic" numerals is a misnomer, it was the Indians who gave birth to our decimal system AND the zero. he is not giving the proper people their credit.
litteraround 2 years ago 6
I just want to point out that Al-Ghazali wasn't an Arab. So you don't really have to worry about equating what he said and what the Arabs believed.
peybak 2 years ago 2
So basically what I am saying is that at the end of your video you say one thing but the reality is something different. The western world is leaps and bounds ahead of the East in terms of science and mathematics. That is because people trust what science teaches them, even if it goes against doctrine and God, which as Victor Stenger puts it, isn't even a viable scientific theory, it is a failed hypothesis according to the Qur'an, or the Bible, or the Torah. Falsifiable, and falsified.
stevenweir76 2 years ago 4
The Arabic people should abandon their beliefs of a God and take their place once again as the protectors of philosophy and regain their worthiness in the world as scientists and mathematicans. HIstory has shown that unfettered, the Arab world could again be rich with culture and science instead of being marginalized by the rest of the world as primitive in their silly beliefs. When you ignore truth you lose respect. There may or may not be a God but I promise you it is not the one in the Quran.
stevenweir76 2 years ago 7
Not only can you posit a Creator for the creator, you can do so ad infinitum. Just as you say God is everything, you automatically multiply it by 2. Because God must be contained within God meaning he is layered ad infinitum. It is impossible to ration this out using logic, and that is because it is simply not true. The only means of intelligence occuring in our universe is through the process of evolution. If you wonder why Islam has done nothing in terms of science lately, look to the beliefs.
stevenweir76 2 years ago 3
Think long and hard before you answer, reading my previous statement. If everything is controlled by an omnipotent God, how is it possible for our lives to have meaning. By stating that God is responsible for everything you render yourself as completely insignificant, nothing more than the errant thoughts of a deity. Not to mention that nowhere in nature do we find intelligence outside of a living brain, nowhere. The idea of substance duality is wrong, so say the studies of brain patients.
stevenweir76 2 years ago 2

"Penal code of Islam is practical and it works."

If you had actually read my comments and done your own research, you would know AlGhazali never said "math is from the devil"
You are extremely childish
IslamicGoldenAge 2 years ago

IconicFiber 2 years ago
Your comment shows deep prejudice and immaturity. Even when one of your own leaders praises the great Muslim accomplishments, you stick your head in the sand.
Science and math builds on the work of the work before it, and the Europeans would have had to start from scratch had it not been for Islamic Science that paved the way. Algebra is "easy" today because you are used to it, but from scratch, it is a paradigm shift for humanity.
IslamicGoldenAge 2 years ago
as for Newton, please read up on him.

IslamicGoldenAge 2 years ago
You mean if Newton was brainwashed...Why in the world would anyone base their life around a book written by ignorant people before the introduction of modern science? All you have is your biased view of the world that picks and choses from science based on your feelings. Your whole life is a waste...Newton denied the trinity as heretical blasphemy because he knew that no man-made religion has the answers. Nobody really knows whats out there.
PEACE
IconicFiber 2 years ago
Actually Newton criticized Islam as a religion who only spread through military conquest, as opposed to Christianity that spread by divine assistance. He also disapproved of the fact how muslims worship Muhammed, who he calls the founder of the Islamic Empire.
These are not my words, they are Newtons.
thepoet82 2 years ago
yes poet, that is my point.
You may not like it, but that is only due to the subjective cultural values you grew up with.

so arabic numerals were discovered in this period, or even by Arabs!!!
What a crap. Pile of ignorance.
Indians were using numerals millenia before this period. They are the inventor of zero and number system.I was disappointed with Dr Tyson.
raniisc14 2 years ago
Yes no one is denying Indians invented ZERO, but most stars were named by muslims plus Algebra is one of their greatest inventions!

i am not a muslim but i was particulary amazed by the accomplismenst that came about in the time period indicated by Dr.tyson. i think the reason for these advancements is due to the separation of religious ideology from scientific progress and the mergence of the two led to the decline of this intellectual period.
ignisacimpetus 2 years ago
Hi,
That is not true, but I can understand why you would think that coming from the western background where the Church has opposed science.
Islam never had that problem. The same scientists and astronomers were religious scholars who taught Islam and wrote about it. In fact, their motivation for many of their advances was religious.
E.g. The prophet said "God has not sent down a disease except that He sent down the it's cure". So people sought this cure
IslamicGoldenAge 2 years ago
Islamic, after looking at your profile, I can see that you have a bone to pick with christians plus you love to point out their shortcomings. They have gone through their blood soaked history, and AT LEAST try to live with others. I am sure they could come up with blaming other cultures and colonialism to excuse their bad behavior, but the truth is, in spite of that, it seems science is growing in that environment. The more science advances, the more religion wanes. That is just the truth.
bimmerella 2 years ago
bim you missed the point of my profile. The more science advances, the more Christianity wanes. It is the exact opposite with Islam. Islamic civilization became the world leader within 100 years of the advent of Islam, and before that the Arabs were nothing. Islam fueled the progress.
IslamicGoldenAge 2 years ago
Islam brought, without doubt, a revolutionary change to the Arabian peninsula. However, as I know you might disagree, the main ideas of Islam truly bear the marks of being 1400 year old scriptures.
The teachings are very much outdated. Just look at the penal code of the Sharia. Cut of the hand of a thief? That is just barbaric, especially when we know that thiefs can change and become better people if they are given the right opportunities.
Come to atheism, friend! :-)
thepoet82 2 years ago
Statistics show 80% of thieves reoffend. Prison made them even deeper into gang culture with murderers, rapists and drug dealers.
If you implement the Sharia, nobody would dare steal (the ruling doesn't apply during times of famine, or for stealing to feed your family, or for stealing something left unprotected)
Atheism is irrational - basically everything came about blindly. It has not objective morality, and no purpose, just relative values that shift with whims and desires.
IslamicGoldenAge 2 years ago
The system of punishment we have today is far from perfect. It is a failed combination of punishment and rehabilitasion.
I promise you, of you take a thief, rehabilitate him, educate him and give him a job, he will become a productive member of society. That is the truly humane and moral way of dealing with criminals of theft.
As for punishment of crimes to scare criminals, how do you explain that in the U.S, where the states with capital punishment also have higher murder rates?
thepoet82 2 years ago
What sounds more rational to you:
1) Mohammed ascended to heaven on a winged-horse
2) Jesus walked on water
Answer: None of the above. They both sound rediculous and irrational.
Aren't you an atheist for Thor, Zeus, Saturn, Mithra, etc.? Likewise, we rationally deny fairies, leprechauns, genies, unicorns, the loch ness monster.
All I do is go one god further. My atheism is only just ONE more than yours. Sounds pretty rational to me.

don't be hatin' on Nessy. she's a sweet mythical beast... never killed nobody....... maybe....
kukulza 2 years ago
@IslamicGoldenAge Rejecting superstition and speculation in favor of skeptical inquiry is not irrational.
Atheism is not a claim of righteousness! It is just a claim that you need to back your shit up before you proclaim that your god is real or that your prophecies are true or that your morals are righteous.
I don't think that killing children for apostasy is very moral.
LuckilyHeDied 1 year ago
@IslamicGoldenAge
Look at the modern countries which have the most atheists. Sweden, Norway, France etc. These are all the best countries to live in according to nearly every statistic. Atheism isn't irrational, you might just not understand it.
chebob2009 1 year ago
@IslamicGoldenAge what statistics? exactly, pulling numbers out of your ass doesn't prove a thing.
Atheism is irrational if you get the very fucking basics dead wrong...
and then you wonder why highly religious countries today are the third world countries...
Darusdei 1 year ago
@thepoet82 You forget that the origin of the change of "compensation to the victim" sort of legislation was brought about by the norman-arab culture, which had in it islamic doctrines of law. This culture led to the Magna Carta. You may refer to "King John Shariah" (google it) as well.
faro0485 1 year ago
You stopped short of the next part of Dr. Tyson's presentation where he describes why this fertile period ended.
Partially responsible was an Islamic Imam Hamid al-Ghazali. Out of his work you get the philosophy that mathematics is the work of the devil. That, combined with other islamic philosophies, caused the intellectual foundations of that time collapsed and have not recovered since.
It may be that early Islam helped in this fertile period, but what it became certainly did not.
Arkalius80 2 years ago 15
Also, Islam appears to benefit from technology because you have backwards Islamic theocracies slowly making use of the technological acheivements of the rest of the world and improving their situations by them.
I'm not trying to bash on Islam, but Islam, like most other religions (including Christianity) is ultimately a philsophy that feeds on ignorance to produce unquestonable certainties by fiat and dogma. Theocracy gives great power to the religious leaders to stifle any form of dissent.
Arkalius80 2 years ago
Read my link, do your own research on Al-Ghazali and the Islamic Golden Age instead of blindly trusting Tyson. AlGhazali was only opposed to mixing philosophy and theology - not science in the real practical world.
But Some people just despise religion, and try to find any parallel with the anti-science history of the Church.
IslamicGoldenAge 2 years ago
I don't believe that Dr Tyson was trying to say that al-Ghazali himself stated this idea, but that the idea emerged among Islam partially due to his works.
The middle east was an intellectual hotspot for a few centuries, but that all came crashing down eventually, as religious superstition took over. Some areas over there are still stuck in the dark ages in some ways, with some of the barbaric and highly unjust laws inspired by Islamic law.
Arkalius80 2 years ago
Not Muslims but mankind will be a beacon of light, when mankind went to Egypt to learn it was a beacon for makind. Whenever all the races get together and work in peace their is great knowledge passed around , that is why America is technologically superior to other countries, it is because we have all the races thinking on the same problems just as in the pass, dont try and attribute this to a religion.
