@DanielWeed72 Its purpose is to dampen the strings, which is useful when tapping (so you don't hear the open string each time you lift your fingers of the strings). You can also use a regular hair tie to achieve the same result.
Man I want to thank you for this! Ive been wanting to learn VW songs for some time, but need a slow break down of how to play them. Now, I can play this song thanx to your vid! Time to learn You aint got no groove....eek! Thanks again man!!
I really can't seem to grasp it. I can play some slap bass well but I just cant get the hang of it. I've never done the double thumb thing either to my head is so far west at the minute :/ feeling like a noob basest here :/
@TheBassBailey If you're having trouble with the double thumbing, I suggest you check out this video v=tM7EOeaybL4 (can't post full url's in comments unfortunately). Double thumbing basically means you're using your thumb as a pick, so you're performing down and upstrokes with your thumb. Just watch the video I mentioned, I think it will help ;)
DAng i've been playing for to years now and i just found your video , i can now play it , in about an hour of work , thanks a lot , keep up the outstanding work
@YertleTheTurtle87 thanks! one of the neatest basslines ever written. also helps as a practice of getting the groove going, since this isnt just about the "tabs". think you get what i mean
@MrCrux03 When you're tapping, as soon as you lift your finger off the string, you can sometimes hear the open string coming through, which we don't want. That thing on the neck dampens the strings. This particular one is made by GruvGear, it's called a FretWrap (just Google it, can't post links here), but you can use a regular scrunchie for dampening as well.
I'm still not sure what you mean :p Are you asking about the thing on the fretboard near the headstock? That's simply for dampening the strings when tapping, I don't use it in this song though. Does this answer your question? :)
the question as to why it is called a tail of hair on the fingerboard of the bass ... aver if by that I explain a little better, if there is no problem, thanks anyway
nice marcus miller bass and sick tutorial. helped a load with the harmonics part ive been trying to play for a while. keep on making theese, maby a tutorial for classical thump if you can. That would be insanely helpful. Thanks for making theese
@TheWolveSpirit I'm resting my right hand on the strings the whole time. You'll have to experiment yourself with how much pressure you have to apply and when. Too little pressure won't dampen the strings sufficiently, while too much pressure will mute the strings completely ;)
@Morosalf I hold my right hand on the strings pretty much throughout the whole song. Sometimes I lift it, like in the second pattern. But just play around a bit with the right hand muting and vary the amount of pressure you apply to the strings. You will develop a feeling for it. I hope this helps :)
@Morosalf I think I know what you mean. Well, it's basically only the downstroke as used in the double thumb technique...So I go through the D-string with my thumb, and land on the G-string below. But unlike the double thumb technique, there's no upstroke! Hope this helps ;)
No one has commented? I don't believe, it's impossible! instead you're great! I would like to play like you! (and I would also have your jazz bass ...)
Bravo... really great video and tutorial. I just subscribed to your channel. It sounds perfect!
