The rifle in the video is Ray's. Mine is the AI in the complementary video. I don't keep groups from other people's guns, however, if you search for "raydog surgeon .308 +site:ar15.com" you'll find a group he posted of 20 rounds of South African surplus. 18 of them went into 0.75 inches and there were two approx an inch out. With good ammo, rifles of this type/quality will shoot about 0.15-0.5 moa. In my article on the TRG-42 and the AI-AWSM, I posted some sub half groups at over 800.
My roommate shoots a .300 rem ultra mag for super long range stuff I don't want to shoot that gun too much recoil. But the ammo is super expensive so you'll want to reload unless your bill gates.
Bullet drop is easily compensated for. Read the articles on practical long-range shooting on the demigodllc web site. They explain everything. There are definitely better long-range cartridgs; .308 is merely competent.
At 4000' altitude and 1350 yards, my hit rate on a 3' plate was half with .308 what it is with my .260. The .308 can be used to make hits at 1000, or a bit further, but is really more like an 800 meter cartridge.
@DEMIGODLLC what about knock down power?, what would you say the effective range of .308 cartridge is for long range deer dropping shots? I see these guys taking down deer at over 1000 yards, but I'm not sure what they are using.
If you can kill a deer at 5 yards using a 9mm (124gr at 1100 fps), you should be able to kill a deer with a 150gr .308 bullet at 1100 fps, if you can hit it in the right place. So shot placement becomes the limiter, not knock-down power.
@DEMIGODLLC so basically your saying if your close enough to hit it and place the shot right, penetration is not an issue, even at 1000 yards? Just confirming if I got this right.
I am not recommending using a .308 to shoot deer at 1000 yards. My point was that if a 9mm at 5 yards is acceptable, a .308 at 1000 would have similar "knock down power", if there is such a thing.
@DEMIGODLLC I have been watching these videos of 1000 yards or more long range deer hunting, which I think is pretty interesting, but I have no idea what caliber they are using, maybe .338? Idk.
@DEMIGODLLC oh yea i know that but i mean .............................. am i over anticipating bullet drop ? are these just awesome shooters ? or is it just a good cartridge ?
Most people can't really understand that kind of range but it's apparent on the last shot.
BOOM......................."That's a hit"....................tink.................
The bullet took a long time to reach its destination even as fast as it is, and the sound of the strike took even longer to come back so the guy saw the shot was fired, the guy saw the hit, then it took the speed of sound over such a long distance a bit for them to hear the hit.
Yes, it does. Lapua has a 155gr factory load that shoots about 2820 fps. I believe you can also get a fast 155gr Lapua Scenar load from Cor-Bon if you call and ask for it.
To everyone that has asked, in this rifle and my AI-AW (.308), the best match load is a 155 Lapua Scenar at approx 2900-2950 fps, using Lapua brass, 210M primers, and either Varget or RL15. This has less drop and wind at 1000 yards than a 175 SMK.
Can I ask how you got the camo like that? I would love to know how to do that paint job whatever you did to the rifle. My gun came standard with British DPM and I want to do something like your rifle. Can you give me some hints? I know just get some browns, greens that are more olive drab - but I was wondering what you did in particular.
Please shut your mouth @Adin07. No one likes a critic that doesn't know what they are talking about. Beautiful rifle Demigodllc. what is the twist rate on that barrel?
I have a series of cartridge-related articles in the DEMIGODLLC site that go into some depth on the subject. The two you mention have more ballistic capability than .308.
Ah yeah, "that's at hit... that's a hit"... "clang"... haha! I'm diggin' your channel and videos. I thought I had been to your site via Snipershide at least once before. Such a small internet world we live in. Thanks for your hard work in long range shooting, and sick rifles!
Thanks. I am down here in Logan NM this week setting up the Steel Safari field match-- Ray will be a competitor; I'm the match director. Shooting will start this Friday.
We do need to get some more recent videos. Ray and I have discussed doing a series of LR videos.
Long range is my next big deal, i'd love to come down and check out an LR competition. All i've gotten myself into is Limited Division of three gun comps, and Snipershide spawned my interest in shooting past 500 yards. (I can hit very large targets at 500 with my AR, that's about all I can manage with open sights) I'm researching what I want for a .308 build as my first rifle, it's tough as a left eye dominant righty.
For general advice, check out my Practical LR Shooting series, Part I. Most of the left-eye dominant RH shooters I shot suck it up and switch eyes for rifle shooting. If you reload, get a .260; if you don't (or you get free .308), go .308 for a first bolt gun.
Roger that, I kind of wanted to get a .22 or .17 for a trainer. I was thinking that before I shot my own .308, I would get used to the other equipment that will be on it. For instance: buy my optics, bipod, and stock in .22 or .17 in that order, then convert it to a .308. Is it possible to do something like that with a Remmy 700?
If you already have basic marksmanship skills (ie from your AR-15), then buying another short-range gun is senseless. I do not recommend setting up barriers to learning the skills that are long-range specific, or delay putting rounds downrange at long-range targets.
The speed of light...spotter sees the hit..then the sound of the hit .nice scope,,and great shooting..

how are all of these .308s such long range weapons when most factory loads are doing about 2500 to 2800 fps at the muzzle ?
dog33100 8 months ago
@dog33100
Even FGMM 175 can make it to 1000 yards. It's up to the shooter to call the wind right. We're also not using factory loads.
