  • these comments are scaring me... im moving here... to mission beach?

  • Could this be a bad 90s VHS tape transfer?

  • Lived in Cairns since 79, the town has gone to shit since then, raped silly by tourism and crime, used to be a friendly little place where you could go out of a night time and leave the house unlocked.

  • I lived in the place from 1994 to 2008 and I can tell you that the place is beautiful. As for the prevailing BAD attitudes that you encounter, that's another story altogether. I miss the the place, I don't miss the people.

  • Come to Cairns have your car windows smashed you valuables stolen , watch out for that guy asking you for a smoke because he is about to king hit you and take your wallet because he missed that when he broke into your car. Don't worry the police might be on their way, but first they want to know the colour of the offender.

You say what does that matter, but best not tell them or else they wont come

Cairns , dont be fooled , not a paradise but a dive.

  • Fuck Cairns some fucking black cunts smashed my car windows I was so pissed off.

  • I miss this place so much!!! It is beautiful!

  • Lol yeah but the funny thing is, is to accomodate for the more people coming here they're destroying the trees and crap which brings them here in the first place O_o

  • I moved to cairns in March 2009 and stayed for 3 months. Ive never been so broke and no jobs I quickly moved back to Darwin and started working again. Cairns is a Beautiful place but u need money to survive there. I will miss the cooler weather and frens I made there in the 3 months.

  • im thinking of moving up there to work on one of the dive boats. do you really reccomend against it? I like the party sort of atmosphere and meeting new tourists and stuff all the time. would it be better to work on one of the whitsunday islands or something?

  • (I'm that stevebery dude below using a spare youtube channel)

Yeah, if you can get a good wage, you will enjoy the touristy atmosphere on your days off from work. And that is an amazing experience. I used to work at a BackPackers Hostel in Auckland and it was great meeting people from around the world. So if you have good money and enjoy chatting with tourists, then you will be OK in Cairns.

  • U will be ok in Cairns if u r working :) Its a beautiful place and I will miss the mountains there.

  • If you actually look for a job in tourism, which gemkilt obviously didnt, then you wont have a problem finding a job. I live in Port Douglas and I can tell you that even the backpackers can pick and choose between work in resorts and restaurants, its not hard getting work if you look for it and dont be so picky. There are loads of resorts and hotels always looking for staff, its very transient here so the work is always there and the dive boat jobs come and go

  • Rubbish. Cairns is built on a swamp and the rivers stink, can't swim because of box jelly fish, too hot outside, too cold in the shops, most of your wages goes on rent, food, gasoline, electricity for air conditioners, and high prices. Some friends that live in Cairns have dengue fever from the mosquitoes. Then there are crocodile warning on the radio often. And more drunks drinking booze than a nest of termites! Unless the Cairns Typhoons and Tropical Cyclones wash them away!!!

  • stevebery, you use the words "gasoline" and "typhoons"...that shows just how little you know about the area

There are jellyfish during the summer months, thats because the water temp is above 27c during summer, during the winter months its down to 23c. Who goes swimming at places like Bondi or St Kilda from April to Sept?...no one, the water is too damn cold. So whats the diff with having jellies in summer? I use my pool all year round, no one in Syd or Melb can unless its heated. Get a clue

  • @tigerrish yes exactly its a wonderful place

  • Perfect winters...no rain, sun shining. Live in suburbia and travel 5 mins to be in pristine rainforest creeks that you can drink out of, international airport with connections so you can fly direct to Asia/NZ etc (no need to head to the cities). World heritage clad rainforest maountains can be seen from every shopping centre.

  • Relaxed laid back lifestyle, fresh air, tehe ability to live in a regional centre with full acess to everything (retail etc), beautiful gardens all over the city and an abundance of water....something which many places in the worls could only dream of. Sure it's hot in summer and we have cyclones/jellyfish...but as they say it can't all be perfect!

  • @stevebery Yeah, but if you're Superman as rich as Bill Gates, Cairns is the spot for you.

I'm just kidding. I've been there and loved it, but I couldn't touch the water (box jellies), couldn't touch any of the wildlife (*all* poisonous), couldn't get a hotel room for under $300/night, couldn't get a dinner for under $75/person...

But, just think if you're stinking rich.

  • @hjones1 surprising to hear most 5* hotels are available on Wotif.com for arounf 100 bucks. Also the good restaurants the locals eat at average 28-40 dollars for a meal. I think you may have unfortunately got ripped by the bigger operators that are in each others pockets, and send their customers where they get kickbacks. Unfortunately any major tourist destination has this element.

  • @stevebery nice of you to comment on somewhere you know nothing about, maybe it the aliens that have tweaked your small mind. Jealousy is a curse mate. Crocdiles are as much a part of our lifestyle in Cairns and it s what makes it unique. Just like nutters and UFO geeks in Roswell. If you had any knowledge then you would realise that Dengue fever is not native to here, it is imported from Asia. I suppose you have no venemous reptiles where you live or diseases? BTW a Typhoon and Cyclone are same

  • @stevebery oh, and no most of our wages don't go on rent, or food or gasoline. Food at major supermarket chains are now same Australia wide (Coles), Fuel is competitivley priced (we have just had yrs of the state Government subsidising our fuel). The oldest known Rainforests in the world, crystal clear unadulterated water systems in the wet tropics. In fact the WHO named a Babinda (a town 30mins away) water scource as the purest in the world a few years back. So I dont think you have the facts.

  • cairns is NOT a paradise, if u don't have money than ur pretty much fucked

  • @LachyP14. Totally agree with you and gemkitt. I lived Cairns 3 months and then returned for another 2 months after that in the following year. Expensive to live and jobs were hard to find and if you did find one it would most likely be for 25 hrs p/w and paying peanuts for wages. Lovely place for a vacation or to retire but unless you've got money to survive - forget it 'cos it ain't gonna happen.

  • im going to cairns tommorow

  • I'm living there, and have been for 12 years , so many cyclone parties I been to, best place in australia I reckon , laid back , just my style, you wanna live in a rat race , stay in ya capital cities, wanna enjoy yaself in the tropics, then come here, "Cairns Rules".

  • i'm too scared to swim in the beaches because of all the croc sitings, used to love swimming at the beaches, but I'm still happy to go there at sunset and walk along the beautiful beaches. I used to live in trinity beach and it felt like i was on holidays all the time:) loved lunico's, best mudcake

  • Staub - you've been in Cairns for 6 months and haven't been to the beach??? Get a life dude - Trinity Beach, Palm Cove Beach, Clifton Beach, Ellis Beach and the whole Marlin Coast rank among the best beaches in this country!

  • the truth is the city of cairns doesnt have a beach...teh actualy beaches are in the northern suburbs...so staub is right..im a local here too...can you tell me which beach is featured from 00:55 to 1:07? ive never seen it before

  • Ten minutes in a car out of the city centre - big deal. That's like saying the city of Sydney doesn't have a beach. The beach featured is Ellis Beach.

  • Totally! It takes 45 minutes to get to Bondi Beach from the city in Sydney traffic... same by train, then by bus, or gotta take two buses to get there. You, people! The beach in Miami is 20 km from the city. The beach in Panama is 45 min away. Where is the beach in Brisbane? At least 40 min to get to the Gold Coast and try to get to the beach on the Gold Coast in the usually heavy traffic! Try to get to the beach in Los Angeles... Good luck! A quick 10-minute drive and they are complaining...

  • Wrong dude, that isnt Ellis Beach its Palm Cove and the shot is taken from out the front of the Angsana Resort looking south to Clifton and Kewarra Beaches.

  • Oh yeah, I stand corrected. I was looking at yorkies knob thinking it was double island.

  • I have been studing in cairns for 6 month and yes it is beautifull but it doesn't really have a beach ^.-

  • I am going to Cairns as part of my 3 week trip to Australia in March. After I have had visited Melbourne and Sydney, I will be enjoying the scenery in Cairns. I can't wait!

  • it looks amzing!! im going to australia in january for 5 months and me and my mate are backpacking from sydney up to cairns!

  • Im going there for the holidays

  • Cairns doesn't even have a beach. Just mud!

  • so what about machan's Beach, Holloways Beach, Yorkey's Knob Beach, Trinity Beach, Palm Cove Beach and Ellis Beach?????

  • Fine if you've got transport to get to them. Back packers arriving in Cairns are usually dispointed - as I was.

  • there are rental cars, taxi's, public bus services - many ways to get to the beaches. Anyway there is so much more to Cairns then beaches....it's the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the world's oldest living rainforest. There are many pristine waterways in the Rainforest to swim which are close to the city also.

  • I love cairns

    Ellis is my favorite

  • Could this be the cheesiest toruist ad ever? Where a lame voiceover uses the same phrase over and over all in while debasing the beautiful town of Cairns.

  • It's a shame you cant even swim in those seas for most of the year

  • why not ?

  • Deadly jellyfish. You can swim in nets, but even that has risks. Generally the only safe time is in the winter months. But I agree it is beautiful, i'll be sticking to sunbathing at the poolside in winter while everyone is freezing.

  • too many beautiful crystal clear swimming holes in the Rainforest to mention whic are more amazing than any beach.

  • glad to live in cairns

  • that brought back some amazing memories :) gorgeous
