  • That's beautiful! Wonderful work~

I do have a question. If you're experienced with soft pastels, do acrylic paints work just as well?

  • @dmenkhau I initially paint most of the models in acrylic paint applied with an airbrush. I then detail them in soft pastels. The pastels really make the coat look soft and velvetty....

  • @cwillmz Thanks~! Because I usually just paint with acrylics, and it looks almost too matte. Thank you! Keep up with your amazing work!

  • Gorgeous!!! I'm in love!!!! lol

  • Simply beautiful! Im working on my first custom any tips?

  • You should make tutorials?

  • it must be such a gift to be able to custom like that x

  • he looks as though he could breathe, but he takes my breath away!!!!!

  • i love him i would buy him in a haert beat bu dont have that kind oh money lol but you probobly woudnt sell him

  • how long does this usually take you?

  • What kind of pastels do you use? I'm having trouble finding some that work well for me. :\

  • @tinyiceburg001 Just make sure to but the soft pastels. I use a couple of different brands that I buy at Hobby Lobby. I don't have them here with me to give you a brand name though. They are in my studio at our other property...One box is only earthtones. Pastels are tricky to use and take several layers and lots of patience.

  • where did you find this model at? beautiful work..

  • @zoedj

He is a Breyer Salinero horse and they can be purchased from anyone that carries Breyer horses. I buy my "bodies" from H & H Winners Circle online.

  • he looks great

  • i like him u should add detail to his eyes make them blue or brown

  • His eyes are actually brown and glossed to make them realistic. The photos don't show his eyes that well.

  • o sry i didnt see them that well

  • wow you're so great with pastels!

  • How do you make a horse look dappled?

  • The dappling is achieved by using soft pastels with an old worn out brush.

  • OMG your soooooooooooo talented!! i can do the same thing, i can do WONDERS with a base!

  • how do you make the breyer?

    the sculpture?

  • its like i expected him to walk at any second! Amazing! i wish they made breyers that could walk but still looked like they do

  • OMG can I please buy him please??? If not do you have any customs for sale or a website I could check out??

  • I use acrylic paint applied with an airbrush and then detailed in soft pastels.

  • okay i am dying too know what paint of stuff you use too create his color i am dying too know:]

  • How do you do the step from 1:13 to 1:15 where the black dapple layer is added? What do you use? What do you appy the dust with? Thanks :)

  • I just use old worn out paintbrushes to apply the dust in a dapple pattern.

  • what do you use to put colors to the horse? pastel, airbrush, etc.?

  • I use acrylic paint applied with an airbrush and then detailed in soft pastels.

  • Cool! thanks cause im getting an airbrush soon and i have soft pastels!

  • wow. stunning.

    i absolutly love dapples.

    hes great. :]

  • Wow he took my breath away. Absolutly amazing.

  • You can buy the model anywhere that sells Breyer horses such as farm or hobby stores, or look on Ebay under Breyer.

  • WOW!!! thats amazing!!! I have one question, where do you get the blank mold?

I would like to try ustomizing and start on classics or perhaps stablemates, do you have any tips or reccomendations?

  • you can get a blank mold on ebay. i actually just got one :) but if your asking for this spicific model then i have no idea :D just go on ebay and type in "breyer horse bodies" under search.

  • hmmm ok thanks

  • So pretty :)

  • ahh hes beautiful!

  • The models feel smooth but not like the shiny smoothness of a Breyer. It is a requirement that the horses are smooth with no brushmarks or clumps so other than the matte sealer feel, there is not much difference in how they feel.

  • Does the model still feel soft like a breyer or is it rough??

  • holy crap he is beautiful!

  • hey i've been trying pasteling and it does not seem to go on the model and i sand this model lightly and wash it and let it dry what am i doning wrong?

  • you have to put primer on it i use auto primer

  • I am not sure what you could be doing wrong. Pastels can be tricky to work with sometimes until you actually figure out what works best for you. I apply the pastel dust pretty heavily and work it into the areas that I want it. I use old worn out brushes and really tap the pastel into the model. After each layer I use Testors Dullcote as I have found it is the best matte sealer that still gives the pastel something to grab onto after each layer.

  • i think you should start a world wide bisenuse make these with those how love and care about horse as much as you do because breyers lack in qulity because they are not made with time and passion you neddtoo do some thing with your talent

  • people who do this for hobby come up with so much better horses than what u see in shops! Why? Because the horses u see at shops, haven´t been done of love and passion for horses :( maybe when the models were made but the colours always look so.. blank. Too small amount of layers, I think

  • The pastels are sealed in with a matte sealer and they are pretty sturdy after being sealed.

  • doesn't the pastel smudge if you touch him?

  • dang! hes prety. if i didn't see this, and i saw a picture of him, i would have thought he was real!!

  • D'X I tryed to CM a horse yesturday and when I put the selaer on after layer five she fell and her tail broke off D'X!!!!

  • she is sooooo amazing! is it andalusian?

  • omg your so awesome at that!

  • Awesome and inspiring is only the beginning. Keep it coming, I'm so happy to see this!

  • where do u get costom made breyers?

  • You can either buy them from artists that customize them or just customize them yourself. I customize and paint my own models.

  • wow thats amasing!

  • Yes, I mainly apply a basecoat with Acrylic paint applied with an airbrush and the details are created by using soft pastels.

  • Do you use pastells for your customs?

  • Yes, I have been to Rothrock farms back in 2005. We had a small tour of their stable and met Santiago and a few other mares and foals. The real Santiago doesn't have all of the dark dappling like on this model, but I did resculpt the mane and tail like to resemble his. I tell you what, the real Santiago is THE most beautiful horse ever! He is quite a character too!

  • do you mean that youve met santiago the andalusian stallion from roth rock andalusian farms is this him?

  • OH MY GOODNESS! what a beauty! you absolutely outdid yourself, what an amazing horse! salinero is my favorite mold, and i love what you did to him. gorgeous! i hope i do see him at a show sometime. FANTASTIC job!!

  • Thanks so much! He will be at Breyerfest this July and then I am going to sell him. I hope you get the opportunity to see him in person as well. He has won quite a few Champion and Reserve Champion placings!

  • you do amazing work! i wish i was that good

  • how do you do the dapple???

  • I use old worn out brushes, soft pastels, a kneaded eraser, and lots of time and imagination to create dapples.

  • I am going to buy pastles today^^

    I am gonna customize a SM ^^

  • WOW!!!!

With what did you make the mane and tail with???

I have a friend who has a white lusitano stallion called santiago!! ^^

    Love the video!!

  • I use Apoxy Sculpt for any resculpting. There is a horse that I LOVE that inspired this piece. He is the ever famous Santiago of Rothrock Andalusians. I cannot get enough of that horse!!! I did have the opportunity to see him in real life back in 2005. Beautiful horse and facility. Anyway, I went with a different coloring for this Santiago, but the mane and tail were sculpted to resemble the real Santiago.

  • Cool!!!

    I have seen your site!!

    its sooo cool!!!

How long have you been re-sculpering and painting models???

  • I have been in the model horse hobby since 2002 and love every minute of it!

  • lol well... i haVE BEEN COLECTING SCHLEICH HORSES SINCE... 2005... and at x-mas 2007 i got my first breyer ^^

  • i have seen your site!!! its realy cool!!!

  • wow! what did you use to do the colour and how did you manage to get the dapples right? its amazing! you are excellent! you should make your own collection. lol. and sell them =D

  • whoa!!!That's what I call talent!! You've given me the idea of making breyer models now... oh I'm not that good for sure, but I'd love to make that actual breyer models... you could!!!
