  • So why is the colors reverse? Is there a different?

  • WEEZER!

  • FREAK OUT!

  • Someday, Someday I will have this pedal. ..

  • oh i get it- philosopher's tone = philosopher's stone from harry potter... which makes you live forever... whoever named this pedal was a nerd :D

  • @ponlm I think it's only called the Philosopher's Stone in other parts of the world. In America it's the Sorcerer's Stone.

  • @ponlm

A "philosopher's stone" is a mythical stone once sought by alchemists for use in the transmutation of base metals into gold - it was also thought to be the elixir of life. So, Harry Potter may or may not have had any influence in the naming of the pedal; rather, the books borrowed the idea of a philosopher's stone from history.

  • the song in the beginning is so nice and well known! what is the name of it?

  • @fearblaster the strokes - someday

  • To everyone who asked/commented on the jacks being on the same side... No idea what they had in mind what they designed it, but i found it fit better on my pedalboard that way. My board's only 10 inches deep (wah-size), but about 2 feet across. I turned the Philosopher's Tone sideways, and was able to drop it the small gap I had between wah & o/d, & with the rotation, the jacks were "on top". Convenient to cable up.

  • I would rather have the Keeley 4 knob - But I dont have enough money for that lol. The philosophers tone is definatley not a bad compressor though. Not really diggin' it having both input and output on one side though. Still a great pedal though =).

  • The Stokes!! Nice

  • hahaha love the name 'philosphers tone', and sounds good too!

  • The Strokes :)

  • Television @ 3:00! man this pedal is awesome. would definitely pick this one up

  • did i hear le freak in there? badass.

  • This is a very under rated pedal. I've owned this gadget for over a year & it's absolutely amazing. It even helped create a "tone" that didn't exist on my guitar before. I can't give this pedal high enough stars.

  • Someday - The Strokes!

    Andy, you're the number one!!!!

  • nice mission of burma riff

  • surf wax america BIATCH!

  • very nice

  • Weezer... great taste in music! Really nice sounding, but as with all of Pigtronix's pedals, expensive.

  • Not to mention "Friction" by Television. It's fun to play spot-the-tune in these guys' videos

  • whats the first song called?

  • Someday by The Strokes. Awesome song from an awesome band.

  • Perfect Pitch

    Solid Gold

  • Perfect Pitch.

    Solid Gold

  • Is is so good that anybody would pay almost 500.??

  • what 500? it's 170 on musician's Friend. Only suckers pay list.

  • Hey MattDonaldson,

If you're feeling the pinch check out the EHX Black Finger

  • wow if only i had some money.

and thank god they got rid of that annoying intro to all of their videos

  • i want one but they are outrageously expensive

  • I actually think that this pedal is very resonably priced considering it's high quality in both construction and tone!

  • does anyone know if the tonebone 15v power supply would work on this?

  • why on earth would anyone make a pedal with in and out jacks on the same side?

  • ahahahaha i think the same, and charguers with different voltage than the generally pedalssssssssss

  • Bullocks. I'd prefer it, especially the way they come out from the sides.

  • @BiscuitsJoe many pedals have the jacks in the same side !! is a cheap option and really good pedal , $ 200 less than a Keeley , maybe the reason is cost production , design , whos care , not is a really problem !! best regards

  • @BiscuitsJoe moog does too.

  • The Gold version was a limited run. Check out the new video demo of the Philosopher's Tone. We push the limits and explore infinite sustain!

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos Hey guys. I've tried to message the sight, and have placed a post here, but I'm wondering if you can tell me if this pedal is capable of true transparency, as it seems to always color the tone with a bit of grit to my ears, but without playing with it myself, it's hard to tell. I think both this and the regular version are fabulous pedals, but if I'm looking for a transparent clean tone, should I go with the regular version?

  • you take ur car, i take my boat..wen ur run out of gas im still afloat..nice demo

  • What is the first song?

  • someday by the strokes off of "is this it"

  • someday

  • Yeah, Television and then Mission of Burma. Andy has pretty good taste.

  • TELEVISION?!!

Always the best choices of songs on these demos. I've never really been interested in compressors, but this sounds really good.

  • Just got mine yesterday, just what i was looking for. Great job PGS!

  • The Strokes

    and

    Television (lead part mysteriously missing)

    Great Job

  • someday

    fuck yeah

  • Freak out!

    Le Freak, c'est chic

  • I'm liking the tone, very surf rock, california inspired.

  • is this like a noise gate?

  • no its a compressor

noise gates get rid of amp hiss

  • Wrong. They do get rid of amp hiss but that's not their prime function. Essentially anything under a certain level of volume is taken away(it's always used on drum recordings). A compressor takes the peaks from a recording and takes it down in volume by the ratio amount. Say there is a peak of ten dB over the amount wanted a 1:10 ratio would take off 1dB. A limiter is a compressor with a 1:1 ratio. So it takes all of the peaks out leaving a smooth layer.

  • thanks :D

  • stroooookes.

  • Mission of Burma at 3:44. Andy's got the best tastes.

  • please...this over the boss ANY DAY!

  • next review as requested on HCFX:

    BBE Two TImer

    Love 'Someday' and this pedal

  • Someone plays World of Warcraft too much at Pigtronics, lol!

  • Actually, Philosopher's Tone is probably a take off on Philosopher's Stone... alternate Harry Potter title :P I don't know much about that tho, I don't read the books :)

  • I wish on these compressor demo's you'd play some Rickenbacker 12 string electric guitar, ala Byrds sounds, to give us another good comparison.

  • very cool name for a pedal

  • With 'polyphonic sustain' do you mean there's something synthy going on or that the signal is just compressed?

  • Polyphonic just means that it can play more than one note at the same time. Every single compressor I know of is polyphonic - I am not sure why it says that, it does make it sound synthy but it isn't. It would be like saying polyphonic distortion pedal, nearly all distortion pedals are polyphonic. That being said, this pedal sounds great, I really like it.

  • Yeah that's exactly why I asked it, if the polyphony is mentioned exclusively it should mean something, right? And some distortion I wouldn't really call poly, you could never play more than a power chord through a Muff ;)

  • The Strokessss yay!

  • Damn, i like it! I cant find out, how much do they run?

  • in the time it took you to write that you could have went to proguitarshop and seen for yourself

  • US$179,00

  • does anyone know if the clean/overdriven divided sound available on any od or tubescreamer pedals?

  • Yes, the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive is the most famous for that feature. We have a demo of that as well.

    PGS

  • cool thanks :)

  • @ProGuitarShopDemos is the grit something as an attack knob?

  • @guslopez12 the grit knob is for distortion, which you can than mix with the clean signal using the 'blend' knob. at about 345 he puts the blend up so u can hear the amount of grit he had better.

  • CHIC!!

  • La Freak?

  • Le Freak :)

  • ... and the award for Pedal with the Coolest Name goes to...

  • strokes!!

  • acid is one heck of a drug...

  • pretty cool pedal.

  • The Strokes!

    Sounds great, by the way.

  • sounds awesome, and yes! weezer

  • was that weezer?

  • Yep, Surf Wax America. Fucking Andy and his superb choice of songs.

  • Definately do want.

  • Sounds great, and would be the pedal I'm looking for; however I don't like the way the Grit "sits under" the main signal.

    Shame.

  • Ok, I've already got one of these and I'm impressed. For me, the real test of a compressor is how transparent it can be. This one rocks... the blend control is a great idea. Not to mention, how compact it is.

I use almost every Pigtronix pedal and I really dig them. I think they're making the most innovative and easy to use analog digital hybrid pedals out there. Plus, all of 'em sound great.
