A "philosopher's stone" is a mythical stone once sought by alchemists for use in the transmutation of base metals into gold - it was also thought to be the elixir of life. So, Harry Potter may or may not have had any influence in the naming of the pedal; rather, the books borrowed the idea of a philosopher's stone from history.
To everyone who asked/commented on the jacks being on the same side... No idea what they had in mind what they designed it, but i found it fit better on my pedalboard that way. My board's only 10 inches deep (wah-size), but about 2 feet across. I turned the Philosopher's Tone sideways, and was able to drop it the small gap I had between wah & o/d, & with the rotation, the jacks were "on top". Convenient to cable up.
I would rather have the Keeley 4 knob - But I dont have enough money for that lol. The philosophers tone is definatley not a bad compressor though. Not really diggin' it having both input and output on one side though. Still a great pedal though =).
This is a very under rated pedal. I've owned this gadget for over a year & it's absolutely amazing. It even helped create a "tone" that didn't exist on my guitar before. I can't give this pedal high enough stars.
@BiscuitsJoe many pedals have the jacks in the same side !! is a cheap option and really good pedal , $ 200 less than a Keeley , maybe the reason is cost production , design , whos care , not is a really problem !! best regards
@ProGuitarShopDemos Hey guys. I've tried to message the sight, and have placed a post here, but I'm wondering if you can tell me if this pedal is capable of true transparency, as it seems to always color the tone with a bit of grit to my ears, but without playing with it myself, it's hard to tell. I think both this and the regular version are fabulous pedals, but if I'm looking for a transparent clean tone, should I go with the regular version?
Wrong. They do get rid of amp hiss but that's not their prime function. Essentially anything under a certain level of volume is taken away(it's always used on drum recordings). A compressor takes the peaks from a recording and takes it down in volume by the ratio amount. Say there is a peak of ten dB over the amount wanted a 1:10 ratio would take off 1dB. A limiter is a compressor with a 1:1 ratio. So it takes all of the peaks out leaving a smooth layer.
Actually, Philosopher's Tone is probably a take off on Philosopher's Stone... alternate Harry Potter title :P I don't know much about that tho, I don't read the books :)
Polyphonic just means that it can play more than one note at the same time. Every single compressor I know of is polyphonic - I am not sure why it says that, it does make it sound synthy but it isn't. It would be like saying polyphonic distortion pedal, nearly all distortion pedals are polyphonic. That being said, this pedal sounds great, I really like it.
Yeah that's exactly why I asked it, if the polyphony is mentioned exclusively it should mean something, right? And some distortion I wouldn't really call poly, you could never play more than a power chord through a Muff ;)
@guslopez12 the grit knob is for distortion, which you can than mix with the clean signal using the 'blend' knob. at about 345 he puts the blend up so u can hear the amount of grit he had better.
Ok, I've already got one of these and I'm impressed. For me, the real test of a compressor is how transparent it can be. This one rocks... the blend control is a great idea. Not to mention, how compact it is.
I use almost every Pigtronix pedal and I really dig them. I think they're making the most innovative and easy to use analog digital hybrid pedals out there. Plus, all of 'em sound great.
So why is the colors reverse? Is there a different?

@ponlm I think it's only called the Philosopher's Stone in other parts of the world. In America it's the Sorcerer's Stone.

With 'polyphonic sustain' do you mean there's something synthy going on or that the signal is just compressed?
