I find it odd that quite literaly every single video on youtube with atonal music (or whatever you want to call it, I'm sure someone will correct me [preemptive shut the fuck up]) becomes a battle ground for people to flaunt how intellegent they are by dueling in comments. I'm being hypocritical to prove a point. This "music" is terrible, hurts my brain stem, induces migranes, and allows elitist musicians to pretend that there is infact some structure to this music that they understand.
And as soon as some one has the balls to criticize it, these said elitist musicians jump all over them at the chance that they might show how supreme they are through their comprehension of music with no true structure. What is remarkable about this, is the fact that someone managed to record the sheet music for this, although many could do it with their eyes closed.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion but to say that this piece has no structure is just silly. In fact, from waht I gather from the sheet music, it's incredibly structured and precise! Look at the pitch material and fingerings you'll see it makes for a unique and comprehensive piece.
It doesn't take much balls to criticize the new or the inaccessible to mainstream. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean no one else can. Do you realize that? When you dismiss arguments "elitists" make before they even speak, how are you to ever understand anything? Be skeptical sure, and question answers given to you, but come on, you're saying, "gravity doesn't make sense, and any attempt on your part to explain it to me is just a show-off. So it's not possible."
All I'm going to say is you don't open your mind enough. But be careful not to open it too much, otherwise your brain will fall out, then you'd have a major headache. And other problems.
The main point of this music is to stretch the musicians skills.
... models of extended improvisation (indian, mostly), and harmonic ideas that are actually a mixture of straightfoward tonal material and more curious, Bartok type stuff. The kind of stuff that you get in "points on the curve to find", etc.
This is a great performance and I am VERY impressed; it's technically far, FAR above anything I could hope to do. I play bass clarinet, and thought of doing this stuff at speed and this accurate would terrify me!
If this is good, then Chemins IV is absolutely astonishing. I have studied the thing for ages, trying to work out how so many ideas could ever occur of such startling originality and coherence.
I first heard this when I was 17, just after it was actually composed, and I fell in love with it instantly; it's been 30 years since then and I still am stunned by it.
I met Harry Spaarney a couple of years later, and he said that the extended techniques used reminded him of a variety of eastern..
Martinu oboe Concerto, Takemitsu distance for solo oboe, Britten Six Metamorpheses. Yun Quartet and Concerto. There is PLENTY of great modern works but anything by Berio would not be one of them, in future generations this type of music will be the laughing stalk of every musician. The catch phrase I hear from high brow snobs is "Oh its so cerebral! ". Atonal music is simply classical music snobbery, "Well I like it, I enjoy it , you just don't understand it,"...
you are severely uninformed. "pantonal" music is a product of academia but is not devoid of anything. Pursue a higher cognitive level is not "snobbery." Even if you do not understand the complexity of the Berio anyone can appreciate the virtuosity and difficulty. Its not that you don't understand its that you're not willing to try. Music is changing as it always has. I suggest you broaden those horizons... especially if you want to be a musician.
wow you are uneducated. i'm fairly sure that manhattan school of music is a joke of a school compared to eastman/juilliard/peabody/oberlin/USC for oboe. I have 3 performance degrees... saxophone/clarinet for BM and Multiple woodwind performance for masters. go ahead and mock my oboe playing. i've been playing for 3 years and its probably more refined then yours. i suggest you post a video of you playing instead of babbling about music you don't understand.
i find it funny you call yourself a "Professional" yet you're still in school and play so medicore! No dynamics, no phrase, no tempo/rhythmic accuracy, and certainly not strong articulation. What orchestra would hire you if you do everything fundamentally wrong? And who would study with you? You know to be a professional musician you must actually "make" money right?
It's funny how you call this nonsense music. I think Berio knew what he was doing. If you knew anything about him, you'd know how brilliant he is. Which is why he's a monumentally world famous composer and you're some youtube schmuck.
I do. I guess my head is just a little more educated and sophisticated than yours. Shame you can't appreciate the life's work of two people (composer/performer), even if you may not like it. Instead you have to demean them and the rest of our music-loving community. You don't see me going around demeaning your fellow gas station attendants do you?
Arghhhhh!!! SO MANY SQUEAKS!!!!!!!

I agree. This is nonsense music, there is too much good modern music out there for solo oboe to play this bullshit.

Like what? Please give examples instead of broad, uneducated generalizations.

this is not nonsense at all. you are really missing out on a stellar work! its very challening and requires much expression!

Holy shit, you thoroughly owned this person.
thegoodgeneral 2 years ago
you are an ignorant of the oboe,
I hope you are not a professional musician.
otherwise you are just being embarassing of the profession.
Berio sequenza is a introducton to modern oboe technique, it is almost a bible for modern oboe.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Play something else than this sensless notes at random.
Berio never compose something good.
Don't follow the pseudo-highbrows saying this music is difficult and requires to be understood...
This crap is not music and does not mean absolutely nothing!

I know he is famous.
And then?
This composition is a rubbish.
Even if it had been composed by Bach.
Think with your head, moron!
