  • I love that Locke says "Light" and "Dark" as a clear foreshadowing. The most common would be "Black" and "White".

  • Why Locke's Storys always so Sad?

  • I think season 1,5,6 were the best.

  • the first 3 seasons of lost is the best thing that ever happened to television

  • The secret is that he has to pee

  • Is this racist to us Aussies? That kid doesnt need an accent to be one of us. You Americans love Kylie minouge, and she doesnt have an accent but she's australian!

  • total goosebumps!

  • @GrinningTurtle42 how do you know? anything is possible

  • @95WOWJUNKIE

Locke couldn't have been Smokey because he got off the island in season 5.

  • It's the Yin and Yang, duality.

  • You're having a bad month...

    Damn, that's cold lol...

  • couls locke be Smokey from the beginning

  • @95WOWJUNKIE No

  • walt do you what to know a secret?

    Walt: yeah

Lock/SMokey: I am going to tell you something that will mislead you, but the end result wont be such a big deal.....do you still want to hear it

    Walt: Nah

  • People, we need more posters over at the Lost message boards. Please contribute if you have some love for the show.

  • THE FUTURE MAN IN BLACK AND THE FUTURE JACOB, PLAYING A GAME OF BLACK AND WHITE, AND THEY ARE BLACK AND WHITE

    HHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG

  • Jacob eating the red herring and asking the smoke monster if he was hungry was Jacob's way of insulting the smoke monster, knowing that the smoke monster cannot eat any food or drink any water. Jacob even asks him if he wants any fish with his mouth stuffed as to taunt him. In turn, the Smoke monster says "No thank you, I already ate." Meaning he has just finished eating a soul/finding another victim to take the form as, like Jacob's brother, the MIB. Beautiful writing.

  • The red herring was used to symbolize that the hero of the island would be someone that was least expected, which turned out to be Hurley. Even Flocke said to Jack when he found out he was protector of the island that it was kind of "The obvious choice."

The season 5 Finale on the beach also symbolizes that the smoke monster was using the MIB's form as a constant reminder to Jacob that it was his fault and was his way of running a guilt trip on Jacob.

  • While the producer's secret was the Jacob/MIB story, there's no way Locke knew about them. I always assumed Locke's secret was that he was in a wheelchair prior to coming to the Island and that the Island healed him. I assume that's what he told Walt (off-camera).

  • We will never know the secret though.

    What the island is.

    But theres always religion

  • When I first watched this scene six years ago I was bored as shit because I didn't care about learning the game of backgammon. Now that the show is over and we know more about Jacob and mib I see the symbolism and now I love the scene.

  • Jacob's game!! Unbelievable!!

  • Jacob and MIB's game: backgammon.

  • @monalisasmiles4you

No. they played Senet, an egyptian game that predates BG. Also, interesting note, although many people have come up with rules based on various archeological finds.. there exists no written record of the rules of this game

  • @FLPman Ummm...how do you know they're Egyptian? And how do you know it's an Egyptian game? In the episode "Across the Sea," there is no reference to Egypt. AT ALL. Don't you think the writers would have included that? Besides, Senet was never referenced on the show. Backgammon has been referenced before, and other popular games as well. It was just my theory that the game is backgammon.

  • question: who the heck brought backgammon's on the plane?

  • Thats have to be MiB!!!!!

  • Nonetheless, Jacob and MIB still answer to a greater power. Titus Welliver (the actor playing MIB) already stated that in an interview. My guess is that the boy is that 'greater power'.

  • maybe one of the most importants scenes.. in the final episode of lost it will be relevant with this (or the pilot-episode)

  • MIB IS THE DEVIL, everything evil, imprisoned on the island. Jacob is an Angel, complete opposite & helps with the "Cork" (locking the devil on the island). The two can not directly harm each other, almost as a game or a bet. This scene hints Backgammon is "Older the Jesus Christ". In season 6, MIB/Flocke says he wants off this "GOD Forsaken Island". Mr. Eko was brutally killed by Smokey because he was a good priest. Just a mad thought....

  • @archee13 He's not the devil..... Jacob and Esau (Smokey's Name) are brothers. Read that story from the bible, and you might see where all this is going.

  • @archee13 God predates Jesus.

Eko wasn't a priest. Eko's death can be treated ass being another attempt, much like what was made with Richard in 1867 (although this is unconfirmed). MIB lived amongst men, he observed others over the centuries, observed their memories, etc.

It was a nice shot anyway. But this scene does give us an idea of how old MIB and Jacob are.

  • I mean 'as'.....

  • This scene is probably the most important scene of the entire series. It proves the producers had it all figured out from the beginning.

  • Its funny when he says "Do you want to know a secret?"

Its like the creators of LOST are saying that this is the secret to the storyline of LOST that it's a battle between Good(white) and evil (dark). And we find out in Season 6 :O

  • My favorite show on TV thanks for posrting. Just watched the latest episode at lastnightstvshows (.) com

  • I think the writers knew from the beginning that one of the major themes of their show was going to be good vs evil, but how that played out over the seasons changed a bit. But this scene definitely is one of the most important scenes in the series.

  • The creators said that they decided upon a few key things to plan out and stay with, for the end of the series -- one of which was that there would always be Jacob and Smokey, white and black. Hence the various white and black themes throughout the series. They said years ago that this scene in season 1 would eventually become a scene where we all look back and say, "Oooh, that was foreshadowing!" And they were right. XD

  • Its funny... Locke is one of my fave characters but when I saw this I thought he was a child molester or something...

  • whos MIB?

  • @filip854 Man In Black you won't know him yet if your not up to the Season 5 finale.

  • So this whole 6 seasons have been a LONG Backgammon game between JAcob and Smokey... there's even a Backgammon rule called the JACOBy rule, but this might only be a paranoid coincidence

  • Everyone is gushing about how this is foreshadowing later events, but it's entirely possible they retrospectively made this scene important via the season 5 opener.

  • sorry butt his makes no sense. This happened BEFORE season 5, and it is the pinnacle of the over all mytholgoy of the show. This is what we're seeing unfold in the final season, light vs. dark.. jacob vs. smokey.

They knew exactly what they were doing when they made this scene.

  • This is the scene that has had the most impact on the entire series.

They foreshadowed Jacob/MIB from the very beginning.

  • exactly. I guessed that too.

  • Whenever I first started watching lost, I always thought locke was a pedo... it turns out, he was one of the nicest guys on Lost.

  • @Steven123678 your an idiot if your saying taht the Bible is Historicaly innacurate, i dont believe in what it says, but almost every historian says what happened in the bible was a reliable source of history, dumb shit,

  • @sk4lyph not all of it. Some predates available records, some works against known history, some of it is up in the air. So you're both right. But to call it 'reliable' is going a bit far.

  • @ makeljc think about it its a huge comparison between the Bible and Lost, sure they may be doing something completly different but it ties in with the story of the Bible, lik for example last nights episode pretty much showed that Sayid was lik Judas and being all for somethign and at the last second becoming something evil and turning on Jacob, i bet you anything to Sayid is gonna kill himself in a few episodes cause thats what Judas did, he killed himself....Juts watch im gonan be right

  • @sk4lyph actually Judas dies in different ways in the gospels; he is killed, he kills himself, etc.

It's actually philosophical, rather than religious. But that's not to say that there is no religion in it. But it can't be limited to Christianity.

  • 6 years later this scene is awesome!

  • the only one who is a FREAK here is you! I know the bible story about Esau and Jacob! Don`t you think that producers gave this names JACOB and ESAU just so they would confuse us??? Producers are to smart!!! The LOST story will have nothing in common with bible story of ESAU and JACOB. This is just to confuse us! I bet my money on it! Producers are doing this things just to keep us in the dark!

  • @sk4lyph ... there is nothing historically accurate about the bible...open your eyes.

  • @sk4lyph FYI, your story is a bit messed up. Esau did not pull Jacob back. Esau was born first naturally and Jacob came out immediately after him holding onto his heal.

By the way, anyone else think it's coincidence that "Jacob" in the Bible was named that because it meant "deceiver"?

  • @sk4lyph yes, and he traded it all for some food....nice, really LOST-worthy.

It's not history. And nothing in the programme other than the name 'Jacob' directly links with this reference. Weak theory, but popular. But ultimately untrue.

  • @Damon242 but you hav to admit their is so many references in teh show about the Bible, i mean he even says Jesus Christ in this scene, the whole ending was about the after life, and i mean Jacob had a twin brother, the whole God Loves Jacob as he loves you line form Lost, the whole Adam and Eve, you know Mr. Eko and his Jesus stick, they hav a whole episode called Psalms 23, (which is a book in the bible) i mean they hav TONS of references to the Bible in the show

  • @sk4lyph I do agree, but his mention of Jesus Christ in this scene doesn't have to do with biblical reference. Christ has become something of pop culture.

Half of the ending was an afterlife--but that is not limited to the bible, every single religion in history has the idea.

In terms of religious reference, there's actually more Hindu and Buddhist ideologies present. The only difference is, Christianity is more recognizable.

The show is, however, far more philosophical than religious.

  • @sk4lyph btw Christ and Psalms don't really go together. While they are in the bible, Psalms is more to do with Judaism that Christianity, as Christ is only present in the new testament and the key division amongst the religions is the idea of Christ being the messiah. Psalms is old testament.

In that sense all of the references you mentioned (Jacob, Adam and Eve) apart from Jesus Christ (which isn't a religious reference in this case) are inherently Jewish.

  • @sk4lyph Plus, most importantly, before the final sequence, Christian explains to Jack that it was a place that they created together, not a place that was created by a divine figure.

It's one of the reasons why its nature is heavily debated. And will continue to be so.

The good thing about that is there is no right or wrong answer (as long as it fits, of course).

  • wow, they tell you right there , black vs white

  • what season and episode was this?

  • Lost producers = gods.

  • Amen

  • Probably the most important scene in the entire series. Everything is broken down to the very basics, and it leaves you with wanting to know more....what is lockes secret? Its a perfect Lost scene, making you want more.

  • @JackkAttack09 Maybe, but the opening scene in the S5 finale is equally, if not more important than this.

  • @RobbieLMAO Well considering this convo took place in the very first episode, and now looking back it gives away alot of the shows meaning, I think it is important. Light and Dark at odds. The opening scene with jacob and MIB(Man in Black) just confirms the importance of that scene. It builds upon it showing who represents the light piece (Jacob) and the Dark piece (MIB) there you go

  • Total foreshadowing. It just goes to show, the creators had to have known the greater scheme when the show began. This scene definitely alludes to the overarching conflict between Jacob and MIB, of which all the subsidiary characters are pawns (although that's a chess term). They're playing an ancient game on opposite sides- who is correct about humanity? Jacob who believes in human progress, or MIB who thinks all men are corrupt and selfish? MYSTICAL FEUD!

  • @JackkAttack09 I reckon that honor belongs to the Jack and Locke conversation about them being on the island for a reason.

  • Whatever it means it was well directed.

  • I think it has a very big meaning that Walt happens to be the one that Locke tells this to

  • Agreed. I think Walt is going to big a big character this season. I remember Ben always saying he was special and stuff back when he was captured by The Others. He stayed in Room 23 and stuff. Something is going to happen with him.

  • I bet most Losties didn't give this scene a second thought! Thanks for posting! ;o))

  • This is one of my fav. scenes.

  • crazy how the producers gave away the main thing in the 1st season and none of us got it

  • nothing has been given away in this seen until later when you realize what it means....all the agreements are just pathetic and don't know what the show is about.

  • @mitchellmakesvideos It just shows that they had the entire show planned. Imagine keeping that secret for 6 years.

  • @mitchellmakesvideos Speak for yourself. I picked it up as soon as i saw it.

  • @JohnEko yea sure bro and i invented fm radio

  • @Noctis411 I can link you the the forum I posted it on back in 2006 if you like? It's pretty obviouse to see how you would miss it though, saying that you 'invented' FM radio. If you are going to be a smart ass like that, atleast make up something that is inventable.. like banana bread, or the telephone. Saying you invented FM radio is like saying you invented sunlight.

  • @JohnEko Well kuddos to you that you picked it up in 2006, however you were 2 years late since lost first aired in 2004, I'm pretty sure alot of people would've picked it up 2 years after the first episode. And I invented chinese fortune cookies, that better?

  • @Noctis411 Well that's lovely but it didn't air in Australia untill late 2005.

  • @JohnEko So u still have one year to formulate that theory. You can say what u want but ur timeline doesn't match up. Don't pretend that u knew the moment u saw this scene what Lost was about, oh and Lost aired february '05 in autralia, not late '05.

  • @Noctis411 Fuck me you just keep on going. Googling replys? Really? Do you not have a life or are you just a knobhead office worker that's borred? It aired on chanell 7 probably on the date you researched so hard to find. But it didn't air on satelite tv untill later, this is where I watched it. It's completely god damn oviouse to most people with even a tablespoon of common sence. Black and white... good and evil... ying and yang, it's not like i've discovered the fucking atom here!

  • @JohnEko You could possibly have figured out that this game represents the plot of the series, but I seriously doubt you could have formed a detailed theory without knowing anything about the island at this point in the series, I don't think the monster was even seen during this stage was it? Just saying, unless you're psychic I'm not buying that.

  • @CosmicUndeadElf That's your opinion

  • ATENTION!!! SPOILER!!!

Es posible que el Locke que siempre hemos visto haya sido el rival de Jacob... incluyendo el del episodio piloto...

  • I knew that scene was significant i just didnt know how

  • Rogerio34567 thier fighting over jacobs ladder =)

  • Hey Everyone! I will upload the scene where it is revealed that Locke was in a wheel chair soon - from episode Walkabout.

    One of my favourite scenes

  • what is the secret ??

  • WARNING: SPOILER....for if you have never seen lost.

That he was paralyzed but after the plane crash he could walk. But you find out later that Locke only told Walt that a miracle happened to him and didn't specifically say he was in a wheel chair

  • It's like Jacob is playing a game with everyone (from what's in 'The Incident') and the Locke reference to the dice made of bones mirrors this, as well as all the light/dark stuff. But, LOST has a way of turning the baddies (at the start) into goodies, like Sawyer and Kate among others, so Jacob could be the evil one

  • And the funny thing is, that entire scene (with Jacob and mystery figure) could prove to be misleading. The fish Jacob caught was a red-herring. Why would the producers use a red-herring, of all fish?

  • Ummm......maybe thats the producers favourite fish....????

  • @MediaOfLost

a red herring is a logical fallacy intended as a distraction or to divert the conversation

  • I always thought it was a red herring too... then somone told me it was a red snapper. Wikipedia them both it does appear to be a red snapper.

  • No such thing as a red herring... it was just a fish. sorry. :)

  • @VladCantSleep The podcast confirmed it was't a herring.

  • @VladCantSleep same reason they do a lot of what they do, just to fuck with us. A lot of it is on purpose, some of it just to be fun..can't wait for tonight!

  • Checked the vid for the same reason, the incident. U guys seem right, this could be the very foundation of the entire series.

  • me too man, inspired by the incident, i love to see they planned things from the beggining like in swan orientation video where marvin cant use his left hand; this one particularly amazes me, the fact that the two enemies (jacob in white dress, the other in black) where in an analogy at the pilot episode, makes me love lost even more

  • Thank you for posting this. Im guessing you were inspired by the season 5 finale as I was. This 2 minute scene may be the foundation of the entire series. Everything from ancient Egypt, to light and dark, and pawns on a large scale game all are in this scene. Hopefully Walt's character hasnt had complete closure and he will return in 2010.

  • exactly what i was thinking!!!
