Menuhin was unlucky in the sense that the age of television and film clips was developing exactly at the time when his technique, and particularly his intonation and bow stability were on the decline. However if you search, you can still find some incandescent and beautiful playing from his earlier years. He was also quite honest about the decline in his bow control, and it must have been awful to go through it after such a stella young career.
He shook like a leaf by the sixties. That's a fact. By the seventies, it was tragic. I saw it twice in concert, and once at a master class, but it is quite visable on many a tape.
There are many hints in the forties of what was coming, but his talent was still overpowering.
I'd much rather be mad than an idiot.
Menuhin accomplished what perhaps no one else could have with such a disability.
absolutely. and even though he had terrible bow problems the message and intensity of the music he plays are always clear and beautiful. and what a wonderful vibrato. matches that of Kreisler

Poor Menuhin. He is struggling so mightily with palsy even in middle-age, and only by his his great talent can he almost pull it off.
The young Menuhin is a different violinist.
