Hi Jareth, just wondering when you restore the 203a will you shoot a video using both of them. Did any artist ever use two together back in the 80s? (just curious). I imagine you can do some very nice layering with two of them? I have had a 203a in storage for about 10 years and am afraid to fire it up after all this time. It was in decent shape when I put it in storage but I heard it's bad to just plug it in and turn it on like that. Any recommendations? Thanks for making such insightful vids!
@polara01 Hi, yes, I will try and put together a video using the two polymoogs together. I do know that Gary Numan used more than just two polymoogs together, a good video to see this is his music video for the song Cars.
Well, your polymoog is more than likely still good but I would strongly suggest replacing the electrolytic capacitors on the power supply soon. Re-seat the mod cards and power it up, it should still work, if you hear noise in the audio signal, it may be time to re-cap.
If anyone is looking for the MIDI files of numans songs, I've uploaded a video with loads of the files in the description. They inclued cars, a game called echo and many more
I'll bet that you've got one part from every PolyMoog ever made in that Vox-box of yours. (If only because only one part ever worked in any one of the things.) LOL
I'm jealous. If I can dig one up, how much would you charge me to repair/restore it?
@HoleHeadedLiar Actually this polymoog looks to have a lot of the original parts, you can see a QA stamp on all the boards and they match. I am an electronics technician so I rebuilt the boards with new electronic components, it was a long process, but I have very little trouble out of it now. It has been almost 4 years since the rebuild and I have only had to do minor things to it.
Well, the price on restoring one would be based on the conditon of the polymoog..................
@synthpro The better of shape, the less I would have to do and the less parts I would have to replace. If you do find one, let me know, I would be happy to restore or repair one for you.
@jibbyc Hi, the reason that sound is so close is because I used the Polymoog for the intro along with a MXR Phase 100. Gary Numan used a polymoog for that sound and that is why it sounds so accurate.
@ganton34kk Thank you, it has changed quite a bit since this video, I now have an ARP Omni mk-1, a moog slim phatty to go along with my little phatty, and am currently restoring a polymoog 203a to go with the 280a. I have also moved since this video as well.
@Keybern Thank you! Yes, The SH-201 is weak but I use it for backing synth parts in my music. I could never compare it to a polymoog or any moog as far as that goes. It is nothing like any analog synth at all but I still find it useful in some situations when I don't want a very powerful sound. I feel that if Roland would have worked on a much better filter for the 201, it would be a great sounding synth, the filter is just so fake sounding.
Hey, i have to re-create this song for my Music Tech coursework, wondering if you could help me out with the timbres? what effect is used to create the synth at the beginning?
Be happy to help! All the sounds are from a polymoog keyboard which is a very unique sounding synth. At the beginning at this song, I ran the polymoog through a MXR Phase 100. you can learn more about this synth at dubsounds. Good luck with your class!
Said it before, and I'll say it again - you need a vintage (not reissue) MXR Phase 100 for the right sound. The new ones (or other phaser pedals) just don't have the same sound. You have the difficult bit (the Polymoog) so it'd be an injustice not to have an original MXR Phase 100 with it.
@RJADVids I still agree with you, I just have not got around to buying one yet. I will get one eventually. I actually have the schematics for the original MXR Phase 100 and am thinking about building several different vintage pedals into one chassis, I think that would be real neat.
I used to work at Guitar Center New Orleans, and I left very recently. We have a used department and we would get used vintage MXR pedals ALL THE TIME, and yes they work perfectly we have to test them before we buy them. If you go on guitar centers website under the used department and search up Guitar Center New Orleans's used department you may find that vintage MXR phase 100 your looking for. And their relatively cheap there.
@ace19901227 Thank you very much for that bit of information, I will check into guitar center for sure. It may still be a while before I get one because I may have a polymoog 203a to resotore and it is going to take a good bit of my synth funds. The MXR is still on my list to get.
me and my son loved your video man, sounds great!!!! Cars was the first record I ever bought, and we watched your how to play vid and now we can on our Korg Tr61, thanks dude :)
@MrTamiya89 I know how you feel. I had the same bit of luck for years trying to find one and finally one day this one poped up and I was shocked when I had won the bid. Keep trying, you will eventually find one out there.
@MrTamiya89 An Ebay auction of a Polymoog ended about a minute ago. The auction was at $400 including shipping with under a minute left so I popped on youtube to evaluate the polymoog again and ran across this video. I had visions of having my own polymoog.......but the broken polymoog on ebay just ended at $1249!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
at least you did it on a polymoog and not on a freakin korg or a oberheim.the moog synth is the only one ever!!!!!! get down to that real sound! thanx for keepin it real.
realy cool :) would be interesting to hear your version without the same kinda synth sounds maybe play around with different sounds, sounds too much like the original,i like the robotic vocals :)
Thank you! You got that right, Bob Moog did know what he was doing! I have to give credit to Dave Luce also. He was the one who designed the polymoog.
Fantastic, I have loved this song for 30 years, it still sounds fresh. It was Gary Numans string sound that I went nuts on, back then I didn't realise that it was the beautiful Polymoog making that sound, great work, looking forward to The Pleasure Principle delux release.
Ok, ok! I have a minor problem, just my own concern. Despite the good work recreating 'Cars', in this media I somehow expected to see you playing the synthesizer like you do in your other videos. Because of that precedent and the unique voicings, I have no doubt that this is your playing. However, I can say that by panning the synths, one gets an idea of the scope of your project.
The only reason I did it this way was because of all the parts involved and I had to layer the parts on my multi-tracker. I actually tried to record my playing, but when you have as many parts this song has, it just got to be too much. I totally agree about videos showing the scope of the project! I have some video clips I may put up as another video just to show how some of this song went together.
Wish I had a Polymoog, I have to make do with the Alesis Fusion with the Polymoog patch. I don't have £2000 - £3000 to buy one in perfect working order. I wish I had the know how (like yourself) on how to repair one.
