Love this song & tried finding that out too. Like a lot of Irish songs, it was also sung in England centuries ago, but the lady didn't live in Dublin in those versions. Don't think anybody knows who she actually was, so why not carry on thinking it's about you. Songs like this belong to nobody & EVERYBODY. What a debt we all owe to the Irish for keeping so many of them alive.
I always thought this song was for me when I was little, being Spanish and Irish, too. I wonder who the Spanish Lady this song was for really was? Does anyone know?

@theforgottenmist@moongoose86@irisborne A new studio from Cambrige or Oxford university (I cant remenber wich one) says that the Celtics came from the basque people, that they arrived Ireland when they were sailing whales!!! Buy the way, I am glad from beein a spanish lady from san sebastian!!! I love ireland!!! grat nation!!!! great people!!!
As I rode out to Dublin City at the hour of 12 in the day, who did I see but a load of Spanish students blocking the footpath and they were in my way.
First I stared, then I shouted, they looked confused 'cause they didn't understaaaaaand.........
All my life, I never can see a clear way around these Spanish teen gangs.
Oh! Come to our country, learn some English, block up a hostel hallway for half the day. Noisy Spanish rich teens, always so loud oh how I hope they're not here to stay
@Mahaim13 They sound better live than they do in the studio! Been to some of their gigs. They make you feel like you're one of the band. I'm a an englishman, but I'm a dubliner. LOL.
@Moongoose86 Actually, there were a very large group that was known as celtic that inhabited the areas now known as ireland scotlan, England, Wales, France and Spain. There were the goidelic (gaels) Picti peoples of scotland, Bretons (brythonic speaking celts), and the Gaulish (those from gaul being france and part of spain) and also the Cymry peoples of Wales and the Cornish people of cornwall.
@Irishborne you dont have to explain what i JUST explained. and i know the history without using wikipedia thank you i was born and raised in ireland. the scotts came from a different branch of celts. which is why there version of gaelic is completely different than any of the four dialects of irish gaelic. , as is welsh, as is cornish.
@Moongoose86 you need'nt be such a self-righteous a prick. I could honestly not give less of a damn whether or not you are from Ireland. I simply added to what you had said, nothing more. You should work on your ability to socialize with people, unless of course you relish being known far and wide as a great ass. I think there are many who are disinclined to part with the years that talking to you shears off their lives, so please think before you make such pugnacious comments.
@KarlitospunkOi Go raibh milé maith agat :D. Euskadi is a paradise for me. One of the most beautiful places I have seen or even dreamed of. And the people are amazing.
This song always reminds me of Brendan Murray, who sang to me last summer. Thank you very much. I hope to see you next Easter week. (It's me, the Spanish Lady, who else?)
Traditional? ask a native and you'll get some puzzled looks, theres no test of who has what blood or not btw, what you are referring to is a MYTH about some ancient ships told as a childs story, modern genetics shows that ALL irish people in general share certain genetic traits, yet they can have a wide variety of looks (phenotypes), the term in modern times is an entirely american phenomena as early stereotypes portrayed irish as one way and nothing else, not so in the homeland.
@MusicVampire11 I always thought that 'Spanish Lady' was a euphamism for a lady of the night. One version refers to the Provost Marshal which would indicate the singer was a member of the army garrison. I once heard a version which also referred to - ' a hellfire rake' - as in the 18th Century Hellfire Club in the Wicklow mountains.
You are correct, reference in early folk songs of Britain (not only Ireland), to a Spanish Lady' was a reference to a prostitute. The same reference occurs in a sea shanty 'Adieu and Farewell, to you Spanish Ladies'
@Tryssya1 Yes but it has more to do with the uptight morals of 19th Century Dublin. Rather like the soldiers of WW1 who believed that all French women shared the morals of the estaminets and cantinas. There are other versions which refer to the 'Provost Marshal' instead of watchman and 'Hellfire Rakes which would date it in the 18th Century, All of which makes Kathleen Ferriers rendition amusing and convinces me that Celtic Women rather miss the point though they are gorgeous
Yes I agree. But you must remember that you are talking about an age, which was more course and more honest about the way they felt. Songs do not tell lies, and just because a song does not express what you you feel, it does not make it untrue.
