Dan Brown, i am writing a research paper for my English class on the problems with education in America. I would like to thank you for linking me to the rsa animate video and for giving your incite and extended discussion on education. i am using both videos as references for my paper and they have helped tremendously with writing it. thank you again for your incite on education and its faults.
In my opinion the first thing that needs to be done to help education is to stop corporations from holding students hostage, it is wrong to charge $150+ dollars per book when you may use only 4-6 chapters, but most importantly, STOP teacher's Unions, and that is not likely to happen, so the spiral continues until we really become third world, that is what I see happening unfortunately.
I believe that your e-reader idea is great. People say that you just cant get the "feel" for the book with an e-reader, but that really limits technological advances.
Also, in my school, some students do not understand the topic right away, and some already know it, and they have to learn it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and so on.
I feel like high school needs to better prepare students for their future. I am halfway through college right now and some of my friends literally have no idea what they want to do with their lives. They haven't even declared a major yet. I feel like, if high schools helped us prepare for what we want to do, we wouldn't have this problem. Instead, in high school, you just take a bunch of pointless classes to get a diploma.
Pseudo-Intellectual discussion is not the direction for an undergrad obviously. There is a framework which includes general study and a liberal arts ed in the first two years of university. This provides a basic framework for learning. You can't learn much of any value by naval gazing. Stimulation is exploring within a framework. You should have been googling & doing research to be verified while at school. Group lead teaching is for those who aren't bright enough.. to take in a lecture..
@AnneFox7 You make a really good point that learning needs to be pursued within a framework, I wish I would have known that early on, a simple sentence packed with power.
thank you very much, I will use it with my children.
Are you social in any way without going to school? Cause I know antisocials that can't really say their r's and you might want to stay social so you can say your r's. Go back to school or talk to people some how. Just in case
I dropped out of University after 1/2 year for same reasons, although I wasn't paying for my education. I was being paid a scholarship. I actually care tons more about science and stuff now than I did before. And I think the future of education is in science/tech informational and (other than that) educational (how-to) videos.
Besides all that, I think in current state teachers should all be voted for/against by students annually to keep the bad ones away. This is plain democratic obviousness.

Funding should be spent more wisely. My school became an academy recently and got a large amount of money. It was spent on a room where we are taught to cook. Why don't they pay teachers more, but make the education that teachers need take a similar amount of time to that of a dentist.
I would change my school system so that research papers in history classes weren't applicable to people who had a certain amount of credits in science or math classes. Right now I'm taking three AP classes and a history class, but it's not fair that the term paper for my non-AP history class interferes with my studying for AP Calc or AP Bio. I would also remove gen-eds as a requirement for college students. High school is entirely gen-ed, we don't need to spend thousands of dollars on 'em later.
@04chriz30: I also live in Hong Kong and I absolutely agree with your comment on education over here. Teachers don't engage students in using their own brains but instead, just memorizing crap from textbooks.
I would definately give my school more money because as my school's treasurer i realize how little money we have towards certain parts of our school groups and curriculum.
local schools in hong kong basically feed facts to students, HW is basically copy&paste from notes and not using your brain at all. you dont have to be intelligent to get As, just be hardworking, memorize everything and throw the information out in exams, and you're guaranteed to get As. so i transferred to an IB school. nothing better. pointless reflections, written assessments for PE. IB = the art of BSing, too much writing, too little stuff taught. how bout a balance between the two systems?
I'm glad you mentioned that ken robinson video! ...and I'm also glad you mentioned in brief what it says because I don't understand the video that well...lol =D
hey, we would really appreciate if some of you guys would check out our channel and watch some of our videos. we work really hard on them and would like some of your feedback and please subscribe if you like them! :)
I really enjoy this video an it makes sence becouse i am a very intalecualy advanced person. So being board with school is being far too far ahead. But not every one is like that so educations needs to change to accommodate the skill and learning speed difference.
@Danielsworlds If you're so intellectually* advanced, I'm sure you would not have made the following grammatical errors: because*, bored*, everyone*, that, so*, education*, ect....Also, the last sentence is worded very ludacrisly.. You're dumb, you are really dumb. For real...
@kenyag123 I hate to rain on your elitist parade, but that final sentence is punctuated incorrectly. Pardon the cliché—yes, that clause is a complete sentence without this interruption. Anyway, that sentence should be, "You're dumb; you are really dumb, for real."
My school is kind of like the one you describe. The teachers give up skills on how to find things, and we go out and find stuff, like for example on an online textbook we sign into. We also have many different arts, and our classes can only be 20 students MAX. So I'm happy I'm what Dan wants to see happen :D
How does it work with college fees in US? Dan talks about spending thousands of dollars a year and I heard how parents have to save money for years to afford education for children. Is it really so bad? Doesn't your government pay for your college at least for standard length of study? That's how it's done in my country, unless you fail many subjects and you take longer to finish a school or you study at more than one school at once you don't ever pay for it.
I might agree with you/be in awe, except my college textbook for how to be a good teacher just said the same thing. College isn't evil inherently, but not learning how to teach yourself is. The world is changing and the teaching profession is biting the bullet the hardest because they have to entirely reinvent how they teach, like reinventing the wheel.
Being a high school student, I agree with what you said. There are a lot of terrible teachers in my school. I think out of every class I have been in, really only 2 stick out. Now what really got me going to search the internet for ideas and opinions was me becoming curious in my religion if i actually believed in God. I watch Youtube all the time enabling me to get countless opinions that help me explore not only religion but practically every other topic in the world. 20 times more than school
Plus I hate standardized tests. With a burning passion. Like, I seriously planned on boycotting them last year (although that didnt actually work). NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND NEEDS TO GO.
okay rant over thank you for the brilliant video :)
You make many valid points. Don't think professional educators haven't already struggled with these same issues. There are no really easy answers. Something you missed about the "university experience:" It is more than the time you spend in class. College changes you in many ways... most for the good. On the whole, there is a qualitative difference between people who have finished college and those who have not. Of course there are exceptions. I am speaking of the population as a whole.
Government schools are designed to dumb us down and make us subservient to government and their corporate sponsors. Read the works of former government teacher "John Taylor Gatto" to learn the true purpose of government school.
Dan, you should seriously, head towards the political field. You could improve so much over these stupid republicans and democrats that are ruining America. I agree with every word you say in the video and I hope you do something great to sustain the power of this country!
after it would show the teacher how we had done! It was really fun, but apparently took hours to prepare and cost a great deal, perhaps take this into account? :)
i agree with some of your points Dan, but currently in my schUK) my teachers make a real effort to try and engage us. Clearly i have some lessons/ teachers who don't quite fit in my school but some are really very willing to get on board this technology fuelled train and see where it takes them, such as using smart boards to interact with us. I had one maths lesson where i had a small digitally controlled quiz box, every member of the class would have one. We were given questions and
The form of education that Dan describes is exactly how my science teacher does things, whether or not it is him but one way or another, it is terrible
The problem with education is that it isn't really about education at all. The focus is on controlling the young. They aren't schools, they are prisons for youth. Institutions for reinforcing adult authority over youth. We need to lose the mentality that kids don't want to learn and must be forced. Children love to learn, it's 2nd nature to them! Make all subjects voluntary, and allow students a democratic say in the running of their schools. Do that and you will see education thrive.
@Antharmo We used to have that before the government takeover of schools. We had the one room school house. The neighborhood parents hired the teacher. The kids cooperated and helped each other. Schools were not militarized into grade levels. Different kids with different rates of learning ability helped each other. Some kids learn to read faster than others and kids who didn't learn to read as fast were not labeled "slow learners". Google "John Taylor Gatto".
Dan the next time you apply to schools, if and when that prospect becomes a reality, try a smaller school. The school I'm currently enrolled in only has a few thousand students and I find the one-on-one component of my education, an exceptional experience.
What would your opinion be on broadening the scope of competitive alternatives in education? A good example currently would be voucher programs in urban districts.
Liberal arts colleges in particular seem to be pioneering a reform in the teacher preparation programs to weed out the "bad" teachers and maintain those who are engaging and passionate about the education field. Education has to be interactive and up to date; PowerPoint presentations re-hashing useless facts and statistics aren't cutting it. That being said, I am currently in the first semester of my student teaching and I can thankfully say that this "reform" of sorts is setting in.
As someone who wants to be a teacher, I know right now that by the time I'm actually teaching (in about 6 years) there will be a demand for it to be done differently. I don't plan on going up to my class with a powerpoint every day. I'm planning to teach high school spanish so I want to make them have discussions in class, do research in spanish and when the time comes for me to teach them a new process in grammar, it will be more interesting than just making them listen to me.
I've found that as I entered by Junior year last year that I was suddenly being asked to think on a level that I wasn't familiar with (and I would say that I think very profoundly for the most part). When my classmates and I discovered this, we couldn't understand it. I feel that was an incredibly unfair disadvantage. Additionally, on the AP level, we are asked to think about things abstractly, but write and talk about them in an professional and formal manner, which I don't feel is relevant.
First off that video? Amazing! I have seen some of there other stuff before, and all of it blows my mind. Also I am not going to lie I kinda like the doodles :) Anyway it reminded me a little bit of "Waiting For Superman". I absolutely loved that film, and I think it kinda has a good basis for the first step of the youtube video you told us about.
Dan, you should look into the Evergreen State College or Reed College. Both have the structure you are looking for already in place and there are required student discussions for every term at Evergreen. I went to 2 other schools before finding and graduating from Evergreen.
(...) But, now I've started taking classes I love, like philosophy and a supposedly more advanced English class where I get to speak my mind while learned about history, humanity and so much more. it has been incredible the coincidence on the internet recently, as on Youtube as well as those classes we started talking about WW2, capitalism, communism etc... all in an extremely pertinent way. Classes should touch on many subjects, integrating them for the past present and future!
I agree 1000%. As a nerd i've always been the most passionate about school, but especially this year and the couple years before I have become increasingly less satisfied. Especially reached to high school, school simply because a a nuisance. Beforehand, I used to be extremely passionate about biology, but recently, with the classes I've been obliged to take, it has completely removed that joy for me. (...)
I would get teachers that teach to the age and ability of the kids they're teaching. I would divide classes up so that kids with similar abilities that learn at similar speeds are together. I would make it so lunch can /not/ be at 10:30. I would definitely get more arts teachers. I'd let them choose their class. I also agree with smaller classes. And. I would teach students life skills, not how to prove two triangles congruent. Think that's the most of it.
If I could change one thing about the Education system I would change the fact that students should be able to use computers more homework and assignments. (I live in Canada) :)
Dan, I am currently in my last year of college persuing a teaching degree, and ALL of my education professors are hammering the idea into us that we are NOT to make kids memorize facts that they can look up in five minutes on the internet. Instead we are to encourage kid to engage with the material in ways that are relevant to them. So we are with you!!!!
I also dropped out of university. I LOVE learning, but I love the concepts and ideas of science, and how they challenge peoples perceptions of the world and that's what I want to do. Creativity is great, and necessary for this field, but the kids that are good at remembering get the better grades, not the ones with curiosity and ideas. So I ran for the hills and got into art, where it's all about making smart thought provoking statements. Screw the high end job, I'll take happiness any day!
I can't agree more with what you've said. The problem I encounter is how do we teach the sciences? There aren't really resources out there to learn about the intricacies of the immune system for example. It's possible, but it is much easier to learn about it when a professor is there to guide you through the dense information and answer questions you may have.
What bugs me about school right now is some teachers are expecting us, this generation so exposed to new media, to already be the critical thinkers they're looking for, to know how to completely teach ourselves information. Yet we still have to take standardized tests and perform well on APs, SATs, etc etc. (At least in the US) Until the actual priorities of the school system changes the way teachers teach will not successfully change.
I first saw that video about a year or two ago and immediately started sharing it with other people. It really had an effect on me and still does. Have you seen the entire speech before?
Having an environment whereby a child can explore the curiosity of their mind is imperative. The way schools are run so that children aren't compartmentalised and taught that collaborations with other pupils is "copying" and "cheating" also needs to change. Groups of people coming together to form ideas is what makes humans so great, and maybe schools need to embrace the idea of open forums and mass collaborations among students and not shun ideas based on a child's age.
Yay, let's get another Tf00tdrama. (Not that I disagreed with you, on the contrary. I thought Tf00t was just being a douche and I generally like his vids. When they are sciencevids that is.)
The most enlightening and make-me-feel-stupid-ing statement Ken Robinson made is that the way in which our system of education is currently set up implies that the thing we have most in common with others is our age. When I thought about it, I realized it's pretty crazy to assert that two or five or two thousand people share a birth year means they will mature and grow at exactly the same pace and in exactly the same ways. Crazy talk.
I think having Elementary and Middle School basically be about learning problem solving and learning to be competent in all the basic subjects. Then when they move into high school, they look at what you were best at in Middle School and gear you more towards those classes. The result being that in the end of your Senior Year you will have a specialization that you enjoy and the diploma will resemble a college degree.
the way to fix schools is to have small class sizes, and changing the class dynamic from 1 person talking (teacher giving students info) to a more discussion based classroom. while in class, i learned nothing. everything i learned came from intellectual discussions with the teacher outside of the classroom.
I am so happy that you quit dan 3.0. It was cool and all and i admire your courage and engagement, but hearing you talk like this and open up so much discussion and debate, is just so much more inspirering.
I should probably make some intellectual point here but I'll just say I agree with Dan but I would add a simple testing system that shows where children belong and how they need to be taught. Like teach them 3 different things through auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learning and then test them on those things. Then teach them how they learn best. That would speed up the learning process. And find a new grade system rather than age.
My eyes got bigger and bigger and I started smiling more and more as you were starting to tell us what you were thinking about doing (hoping you would say you would maybe vlog everyday from now on)...instead you got me with the stupid college. Haha just kidding, congrats about that. i think that would be great for you! Then we could discuss college level things and how you put a slip of paper suggesting E-Readers in that little box next to the bathroom. Btw, who was at your door? (nosy)
@matt22mccarthy So we'll need to know how technology works, which mostly deals with math and science combined, so we need math. And in order to interpret all this in the first place we would need to learn how to read and understand our own language before we understand other things so theres English. And in order to understand our own government and how the United States (Or other country that you live in) came to be, we would need to take history classes.
@Unwantedn00b Also to be able to have the ability to create new and convenient technology we would need Art to train the creative minds. To be able to interpret this creativity we need DT, and to understand it, you need math. It's a whole cycle, I guess.
love what you're saying. i also think along with a changing the current view of education in the united states we need to have better teachers. get rid of tenure. higher salaries. make teaching a job that the brightest and the most to give one they would aspire to have.
If you want to learn how to learn, I recommend doing a pure science like Math. It teaches you problem solving in the most abstract way possible.......
i am a college student majoring in computer engineering i have to take 15+ hours of class that would have nothing to do with my major that i could have learned on my own that is one semester worth of classes right their and i have to have 136 hours hours to graduate that split up is about the max hours any one can take at a time.
I agree with everything that you said. There are so many changes that the school system could make that would not only help students grow, but help them save money doing it. Such as the e-reader thing you mentioned.
I'm an art and philosophy major and in the high school I attended, we had only one art teacher and the only reason we still had an art program is because he was so dedicated to making sure that the art program stayed. We need more people like that. So many people view art as useless but art really goes hand in hand with philosophy. It's about asking questions and exploring concepts other fields don't go anywhere near. We need more stimulating thoughts and thinkers to guide us towards them.
It would suck if students were taught fewer facts, it would result in a generation of scientists who needed to consult Google to know what a molecule is. That said, it would be helpful if students learned less information about topics which they will never use in their careers and more on skills such as finance, charisma, writing/conventions, and personal defense. I agree that schools need to spend smarter- I was in Middle School last year, and there were five televisions in the cafeteria.
@edshu33 Well, It would be best if they did focus primarily on teaching them how to learn like Dan said. Teachers will still teach facts. It's not like they would just stop doing that lol. Once you learn how to learn, you will be able to learn facts more easily and It would definitely pay off in college and/or job training when you can learn skillfully and efficiently because you learned how to learn, not just take notes and memorize facts in a tedious way.
@KouskeUeki There's one thing I'm not buying about Dan's argument, and it is that if students were taught to find facts on the internet rather than know that facts, then there would be nobody to post knowledge to the internet.
@edshu33 I don't think that's true. What's the point in learning to learn if no one actually learns anything in the long run. I imagine students receive the bulk of their knowledge from High School and college. By this time they will have learned likely more than what they would have learned and there would probably be in increase in people posting what they've learned on the internet. People will learn and then report what they learn. And there is plenty existing info on the net already
Your analysis is sound when discussing upper class high schoolers and college students, but there are many things students NEED to have memorized. Basic rules of grammar, basic mathematics, etc...
I wanna be an art major, animation specifically, and know what school I want to attend when I graduate. I just barely slipped into Advanced Drawing this year (the class most Art inclined kids take for their portfolios) but if the levy doesn't pass in November almost all the art classes will be shut down next year, and there is some argument if at the semester art classes that are cut will turn into study halls. Also busing will end, and our parking lot was built to be a death trap to pass one :(
I would put in more performing arts programs and visual arts. My school threatens to cut mostly the Shakespeare plays every year, and it's ridiculous. Shakespeare, in my opinion, is really important to have in school.
It's pretty unfortunate that most of society know that students dislike going to school yet people don't see anything wrong with that - dreading learning.
Your point about teachers not teaching skills but teaching the skill of learning skills made me just go "damn, he's really smart."
And if I were to change anything, I would change the fact that college is ridiculously expensive for the quality of education the student receives. Schools raise tuition damn near every semester and then invest all their time and effort (and money) into beautifying the school and adding more technology, instead of investing more time in the student's education.
I study physics as a pastime on my own. Mostly I study particle physics, and I find it to be pretty sad that when you mention antimatter to a high school science teacher that their first reply is, "I would stop believing everything you see in movies and fantasy."
Dan has become more influential then most academics which I think is important. It's hard to find multiple points of view in the world so well done for giving them all to us dan.
if we want students to do better than we need to lighten up on homework. schools will let us out around 3 and then we go home (3:30) then they want us to spend 1 hour on physical activity (4:30) one might have up to 3+ hours of homework (7:30) we need dinner (8:30) we read at least 30 min (9:00) and if we get the recommended 10 hours of sleep, with waking up at 6:30 that means that one would need to go to sleep at 9:30. That will make for one stressed out kid
The UK system of teaching to the best of my knowledge (as a commentor below said, could just be my specific school) is actually a pretty good one. Most of my classes involve us discussing with the teacher and learning what we're meant to without ever really realising it. We have laughs along the way but also are able to understand what we need to without it being thoroughly drilled in. I like open classes where we can discuss our opinions with one another.
Hello Dan! I have an interesting subject I would like you to cover. When Hitler was at his best and communism was at a high, the world was in misery. Although... A lot of the disasters today could have been avoided. For example, the tragic attack of 9/11. I would be very happy if you would be so kind as to share your thoughts on Hitler and what the world would be like if he was still in power. Thanks a lot- Anthony, HF.
I got confused by the end of the video you said i think that we should be preparing for jobs and skills that arn't even discovery out yet. Well they already do that.
This may sound crazy, but I think the UK system of A-levels is actually a pretty good form of education. Maybe it's just due to the way I am being taught my subjects, but because of my A-levels, I properly understand a lot about Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (my current subjects). I can discuss these subjects extensively, without ever resorting to merely quoting facts. The only thing I dislike is that it's taken 11 years of schooling to reach this level of learning/understanding.
but the fact is that some people are just to lazy to find out information for themselves so they need a teacher that gives them homework and tests to motivate them (and it's not easy to "google" the right things all the time)
small liberal arts colleges are where it's at! but you really don't have to be in college to have these types of discussions. i'm happy to see it happening here on youtube as well!

@04chriz30: I also live in Hong Kong and I absolutely agree with your comment on education over here. Teachers don't engage students in using their own brains but instead, just memorizing crap from textbooks.
johnwillsful 4 months ago
I would definately give my school more money because as my school's treasurer i realize how little money we have towards certain parts of our school groups and curriculum.
G7Dore 4 months ago
local schools in hong kong basically feed facts to students, HW is basically copy&paste from notes and not using your brain at all. you dont have to be intelligent to get As, just be hardworking, memorize everything and throw the information out in exams, and you're guaranteed to get As. so i transferred to an IB school. nothing better. pointless reflections, written assessments for PE. IB = the art of BSing, too much writing, too little stuff taught. how bout a balance between the two systems?

@Danielsworlds If you're so intellectually* advanced, I'm sure you would not have made the following grammatical errors: because*, bored*, everyone*, that, so*, education*, ect....Also, the last sentence is worded very ludacrisly.. You're dumb, you are really dumb. For real...

The world is changing and the teaching profession is biting the bullet the hardest because they have to entirely reinvent how they teach, like reinventing the wheel.

You make many valid points. Don't think professional educators haven't already struggled with these same issues. There are no really easy answers. Something you missed about the "university experience:" It is more than the time you spend in class. College changes you in many ways... most for the good.
Antharmo 5 months ago

I can't agree more with what you've said. The problem I encounter is how do we teach the sciences? There aren't really resources out there to learn about the intricacies of the immune system for example. It's possible, but it is much easier to learn about it when a professor is there to guide you through the dense information and answer questions you may have.
arobbins210 5 months ago
What bugs me about school right now is some teachers are expecting us, this generation so exposed to new media, to already be the critical thinkers they're looking for, to know how to completely teach ourselves information. Yet we still have to take standardized tests and perform well on APs, SATs, etc etc. (At least in the US) Until the actual priorities of the school system changes the way teachers teach will not successfully change.

go1711 5 months ago
Having an environment whereby a child can explore the curiosity of their mind is imperative. The way schools are run so that children aren't compartmentalised and taught that collaborations with other pupils is "copying" and "cheating" also needs to change. Groups of people coming together to form ideas is what makes humans so great, and maybe schools need to embrace the idea of open forums and mass collaborations among students and not shun ideas based on a child's age.

Crazy talk.
Lauffles 5 months ago 2
I think having Elementary and Middle School basically be about learning problem solving and learning to be competent in all the basic subjects. Then when they move into high school, they look at what you were best at in Middle School and gear you more towards those classes. The result being that in the end of your Senior Year you will have a specialization that you enjoy and the diploma will resemble a college degree.
ImaginaryChris 5 months ago
the way to fix schools is to have small class sizes, and changing the class dynamic from 1 person talking (teacher giving students info) to a more discussion based classroom. while in class, i learned nothing. everything i learned came from intellectual discussions with the teacher outside of the classroom.

OlliMolliTolli 5 months ago
I should probably make some intellectual point here but I'll just say I agree with Dan but I would add a simple testing system that shows where children belong and how they need to be taught. Like teach them 3 different things through auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learning and then test them on those things. Then teach them how they learn best. That would speed up the learning process. And find a new grade system rather than age.

It would suck if students were taught fewer facts, it would result in a generation of scientists who needed to consult Google to know what a molecule is. That said, it would be helpful if students learned less information about topics which they will never use in their careers and more on skills such as finance, charisma, writing/conventions, and personal defense. I agree that schools need to spend smarter- I was in Middle School last year, and there were five televisions in the cafeteria.
edshu33 5 months ago
@edshu33 Well, It would be best if they did focus primarily on teaching them how to learn like Dan said. Teachers will still teach facts. It's not like they would just stop doing that lol. Once you learn how to learn, you will be able to learn facts more easily and It would definitely pay off in college and/or job training when you can learn skillfully and efficiently because you learned how to learn, not just take notes and memorize facts in a tedious way.
KouskeUeki 5 months ago
@KouskeUeki There's one thing I'm not buying about Dan's argument, and it is that if students were taught to find facts on the internet rather than know that facts, then there would be nobody to post knowledge to the internet.
edshu33 5 months ago
@edshu33 I don't think that's true. What's the point in learning to learn if no one actually learns anything in the long run. I imagine students receive the bulk of their knowledge from High School and college. By this time they will have learned likely more than what they would have learned and there would probably be in increase in people posting what they've learned on the internet. People will learn and then report what they learn. And there is plenty existing info on the net already

And if I were to change anything, I would change the fact that college is ridiculously expensive for the quality of education the student receives.
