Unfortunately, Marilyn Monroe hated this movie because she thought that Fox wanted to punished her for bad behavior giving her a secondary role (less important that a star with her greatness was used to). She never talked about this movie after in her career and yet said that was a movie to forgot.
This is so brilliant- a masterpiece! His moves are so smooth and elegant, but always with some humor. What an incredible talent and he was so adorable and charismatic! He was a lot younger than Gene and unfortunately wasn't at powerful MGM during his younger days. Thank goodness he did Singing in the Rain at MGM. If the big musical and the studio system weren't on the decline shortly after this, one wonders what he could have done. As it is, he gave us incredible performances.
I'm pretty certain that he did this routine in flat leather sole shoes because there's too much of that 'ssshhh' sound and the tap sound is much stronger, but I may be wrong...
I've got this film on dvd (region 2 at last, hurray!) and I'm NEVER tired of watching this scene over and over again! I've seen some of his 'dance and sing' routines on you tube and they all are breathtaking!!!!! And, it's not, I do agree with someone here!, Gene Kelly-like routine - it' all Donald's-like!
I completely agree with you (TheBeatlesrox). Donald O'Conner was a TREMENDOUS dancer/singer/actor! But for some reason, nobody really thought of him that way. IN MY OPINION, Donald O'Conner might've even been better than Gene Kelly!
this film has 1 of the worst storylines ever...BUT...donald o'connor...WOW!!! im so suprised this scene isnt more famous! hes transfixing! (and strangely, very attractive!) if it wasnt 4 my intense dislike of ethel merman id watch this film all the time JUST 4 him! and mitzi...and marilyn...(GREAT cast!!!)
To say this video is Donald O'Connor's "Gene Kelly-like dance" does Donald a disservice... in fact it's a very Donald O'Connor-like dance. No disrespect to Gene but this dance is much more Donald's style than Gene's.
I agree 101% Donald O'Conner was a very talented singer/dancer/actor. To compare the two is like comparing apples to apples. The poster is either very young or knows nothing of Donald O'Conner's work.
the tap shoes were the thing back then and the sounds of the tapping add a secondary rhythm to the music and dancing enhancing the viewing experience. You can do it in taps or in flat leather sole shoes(with no tap effect)
Thank you so much for posting this clip! I luv Donald O'Connor, he has such as soothing voice and he was the best dancer that ever lived IMHO. Do you have anymore clips of him from this movie? plz post if you do!
This song was recorded by debbie reynolds and eddie fisher when they were "america's sweethearts". Too bad debbie.....

Donald O'Connor is great but Fred Astaire is better, Gene Kelly is awful, sure he can dance but he was apparently a jerk in real life.

He was from a family of acrobats.
Not Many People Know That!! (adopts Michael Caine voice) A very under-rated singular talent

Donald was wonderful. Had a very successful career. Was in dozens of films. Won various
awards. Has 2 stars on the Hollywood walk
of fame.
I saw him in Las Vegas in the 60s. Could
still dance and sing and entertain.
His most frequent co stars were Peggy Ryan
and Francis the Mule.
Tx 4 the great post.

One of my favorite routines by Donald!
i cant believe he didn't get more props for doing a routine like this! i think he is very underrated dancer/actor.
TheBeatlesrox 4 years ago 7
i would say this was the trippiest dance scene ever but I've seen some Gene Kelly movies. Anyway, Donald O'Connor = AMAZING.

gene kelly's dances were always a little more serious compared to O'Conner's which he always added alot of humor into his dance sequences.

Can you do that with normal shoes? or do you have to have tap shoes?!
