I think it mostly understands the context in which phrases are said, but has little understanding in what each individual word actually means and how they're supposed to be used if he/she wanted to form a new phrase. Each phrase is recognized as one distinct sound, but they can learn language by oversimplifying it and adding a "rival" which adds an incentive to be competitive to remember and understand a word's underlying meaning.
