Thanks for posting! I used the stew mac dye, but it gets on the binding and stains it immediatly...but this stuff looks like it does not afftect the binding...gotta try it!
You can polish until your arm falls off, but it still won't sound like an ebony fretboard. So why bother? Just to fool yourself that you have an ebony fretboard?
Cause it looks nicer and I got nothing better to do with my fucking time. I dont like the look of rose wood as much a ebony so I stained it. Is there something wrong with that. Got any other comlants?
@DarthNigg The fretboard wood has only a very subtle influence on tone. Tone is mainly influenced by the guitar's pickups and the amplifier. A guitar like the one in the video is typically played with so much distortion the fretboard wood's effect on tone is moot. The particular wood used or the alteration of it is all about aesthetics and has absolutely nothing to do with tone.
mother of pearl (mop) is white with a greenish purple rainbow-like reflectiveness to it. what most production guitars, like ibanez, jackson, gibson, ect have is abalone, which is all white. it doesnt mean that mop is so crazy expensive only super high end guitars have it, but abalone is the standard. unless you put after market stickers on, i dont know of any guitar that comes with "decals" as you say
You actually think it is an abalone "stone"? It a fuck thin peiece of abalone glued into the cut in the wood. A VERY thin hole. Its not a peice of Mother of Pearl.MOP Is a little expencieve. You can actually go in there with a razorblade and peel up the cheap abolone. I described them like " decales".
@brib333 ok not to get into a youtube comment war but... i decided to actually see for myself instead of just thinking im right so, i cut up an old ibanez grg 170dx neck with sharktooth inlays (one of the lowest priced guitars ibanez sells) that i use to hang my guitar bodies when refinishing them, and yes the inlays are actual stone, it chipped a lot when i was trying to get it out, theyre glued in tight as hell (you dont normally want to remove them eh?) and id say its about 2 to 4 mm thick
@xxgdkxx Abalone and Mother of Pearl are part of a shell as in seashell by the seashore. It is not rock or stone. There is also a simulated pearl material called pearloid used in some guitar parts.
@brib333 I wanted to thank you for this video. It definately is an improvement over the rosewood look. I've owned a few Jackson guitars and even the low end Jacksons have actual inlays cut into the fretboard. I believe the difference is between immitation mother of pearl and real mother of pearl. Mother of pearl and abalone are both transluscent, but abalone looks alot different and is not a stone. Its sort of like a giant clam or shell fish thing. I've caught a few when I was younger.

No, NOT a Sharpy. Your guitar must look like shit. Why come up with a dumb idea as a sharpie. What Im useing is STAIN!!!!! Will stay much longer than a pos sharpie. Thats just dumb.
Dude the very best way to add oil and darken the fretboard is to use linseed oil applied to a cotton bud and rubbed on very lightly and then wiped off after you have cleaned the fretboard with the 01. Linseed oil adds the essential oil the rosewood needs and look like a million dollars. I learnt this from Dan Erlewin's books and by talking to good techs. Note the linseed oil must be the non-boiled version. 1 liter will last you 10 - 20 years depending on how many guitars you have.
Yes linseed oil is very good for rosewood. I just dont have it and everytime I go to out I forget to get it. But lemon oil and the Dunlop 02 deep conditioner that I have work just as well.Thank you and Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!
not to be mean or anything but i love how you didnt know what you were talking about when you were talking about the inlays
ok just so you know, inlays are usually pearl that had placed into the wood, they cut a hole in the fretboard so the inlay will fit and then they press it in
dont take this is the wrong way
im just saying :) , but i love the video non the less :)
Um. Mother Of Pearl is very expensive. It is use on the higher end guitars. Guitars like mine decals are used as far as I know. BUT it is NOT MOP. Thank you and ROCK ON!!!!!!!!
the oposite of Mother Of Pearl. Mother Of Pearl is VERY expensive. So they route the spot and put a decale in there. No big deal. As long as they stay on!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why exactly would you want to 'darken' or stain a rosewood fretboard? I can understand conditioning the wood to bring out its original/natural darker color, but I don't understand what you're doing here. Are you trying to make it look like ebony?
P.S. Has anyone ever told you that you sound like Criss Angel?
HaHaha YES that is exactly what I am going for.Ebony ,at least for me,looks so much better on a guitar compared to rosewood. It REALLY does make a difference on the look of the guitar. There are A LOT of people doing this to there fretboards. Its nothing new. Next video Ill show how to REALY polish the fret wire on the guitar. Thaanks for watchinging!!!!!! Rock on!!!!!
@brib333 I love the look too. I was wondering how long will the stain look of ebony last before it starts to fade? and will it come off on a rag after it's dry, when you use polish? I used to have an old Gibson Les Paul custom, Made with a real ebony fretboard. not only do they look better, but they are so much warmer sounding. seem to be very hard to find these days. most new ones don't even have them, even if they cost over $2000,00. that's sad to say. thanks for your video. Peace..
It has not faded at all and its been on there a while. The most important thing is you have to dry all the oils and dirt from the board first so it sucks up the stain really good. But after like 2-3 applications your fretboard should be good for the life of it. I thought Id have to keep applying but no.
Have you ever tried the SD TB-6? Despite the name, I found it to clean up a lot better than a JB when you roll the volume down and it has such an awesome crunch when full blast.
I leave it on for about until it soaks in good. Then just take a very soft cloth and wipe everything off. I have a compressor but you can use a can of compressed air and blow the extra from under the fret wire. Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
