Sabatini probably thought she had the match locked up after gaining a 4-2 lead in the 3rd. But Monica stepped it up and took Sabatini apart with a lethal combination of power and precision. So for once Sabatini wasn't guilty of choking, it was simply a matter of Monica taking it to Sabatini at crunch time.
Sabatini has to be the unluckiest player ever to win only 1 slam. She was such a strong player from 1988-1992. She was just unlucky to be in the era of Graf, Navratilova, and Seles, 3 of the greatest players of all time, all at or near the height of their powers during this time. I often feel a player like Sanchez is no better or worse than Sabatini, but was lucky to peak after Seles was stabbed and Graf was dealing with injuries. Sabatini definitely best player ever with only 1 slam.
I agree with the other posters Sabatini just wasn't the same after this loss to Seles. Sabatini never was a contender after this loss. The worst part for Sabatini is she had a chance to win but she just did not have the weapons to win. Sabatini's serve is just garbage. Seles had the serve, nerve, and weapons that's why she dominated Sabatini 11-3.
@JordanjamesX your constantly coming on videos with Sabatini on it just to thrash her is pathetic. Sabatini was an excellent player, clearly the best player to win only 1 slam, and better than some 3 slam winners probably. She just got unlucky to be in an era where Graf, Seles, Navratilova, and even your crush Sanchez Vicario were all strong. You diss her constantly, when in reality I am sure she could beat you playing from a wheelchair as you are probably some fat ass couch potatoe.
@raff23 Yeah I agree. And Sanchez relatively was much luckier than Sabatini as she hit her peak years after the Seles stabbing, when Graf was often injured, and when Capriati, Fernandez, Navratilova, Sabatini were all on decline or going off tour completely.
@grafgirl27 Or maybe the fact is Arantxa was much mentally stronger than Gabriela despite being a smaller woman. Arantxa was a fighter and all the top women knew they had to play their best to beat her. Arantxa didn't have the melt downs Sabatini had numerous times such as this loss to Seles, and the 1991 Wimbledon final loss to Graf. The match that really ended Sabatini's career was the 1993 French Open loss to Mary Joe Fernandez. Sabatini had no self confidence left.
@JordanjamesX LOL you call this match a meltdown. Hello open your eyes you clueless twat, Seles hit 7 winners in a row at one point. What was Sabatini supposed to do. As for Sanchez she benefited from the Seles stabbing even more than Graf, she probably never wins another slam otherwise and has 1 slam like Sabatini currently does. Sabatini peaked when Navratilova, Graf, Seles, and Evert were on top. of course she wasnt going to win much. Sanchez peaked when Conchita Martinez reached #2.
@grafgirl27 No your comments are pathetic I state my opinion and listen B.I.T.C.H. my opinion is my opinion! Sabatini had a S.H.I.T. SERVE and NO WEAPONS. So F.U.C.K. Y.O.U.!
@JordanjamesX Such a mature tennis argument displaying all your vast knowledge on the game (NOT). You dont state things as just your opinion so cut the opinion crap. You are on every video of Sabatini, Capriati, or Graf bashing them, or every video of Seles, Sanchez, or Williams kissing their ass profusely then swearing and insulting people who dont agree that everything about your warped opinions are right.
This loss to Seles ended Sabatini's career as a top WTA contender. Sabatini had a 4-2 lead in the final set and of course LOST. Sabatini was so close in the early 1990s to reaching the top of women's tennis but always FOUND A WAY TO LOSE.

Gaby's ineffective ground strokes would get her blown away today, she looks ridiculous in a skirt with her manly eyebrows and butch aura! You can't tell me she is not a lesbian!!!
I love Gaby, but I think this is that match that broke her, not the 91 final with Stefi. She even said during the after match interview, there were times when she did not know what to do.
@beavertown2006 I think the precision never deserted her, but she had problems with retrieving balls because she had gotten a lot slower afterwards...

Awesome display from Monica, thanks for posting!.

seles uses two hands on both the forehand and backhand. interesting. wouldn't that style of play be disadvantageous; e.g. her reach is limited

Does anyone have the entire match?

Great match this - some beautiful tennis played.
Interesting to see how short Gabi started hitting the ball though - allowed Monica to really attack

@grafgirl27 sabatini in any other era would have won multiple slams, she was just unlucky to have so many great players to contend with.

Monica Seles always dominated Gabriela Sabatini because she had the mental toughness Sabatini lacked.
