You're next point: " A head is the way it is because that is the way it sounds best". I think what you meant to say is: A melody sounds the best when it is played as the composer wrote it. FALSE! What about melodies like Bye Bye Blackbird, All the Things You Are, of countless other show tunes that were adapted to the Jazz canon. If you played those melodies as written, you'd be laughed off the stage.

As far as the melody to Cherokee...it's a throw away melody on a great set of changes. Why do you think so many people have recorded it and not even played the melody???

First off, Miles didn't invent simplicity and he didn't invent cool (jazz). People were playing modal and "simplistic" in 1956 and way earlier. Also, have you ever heard anything he recorded after 1964? You imply that simplicity in music is being able to deliver "deep ideas". What is a deep idea anyway? And how do you play a song that is made up mostly of whole notes and quarter notes actively? COME ON MAN!

You seem like a nice kid, but you need to investigate some things. This guy Benny has.

First off, this guy IS a good musician. How dare you say he's not. Listen to his solo kid. And no you're wrong about Miles and modal music. Did you know that Kind of Blue was not liked when it came out? I bet not. Listen to Trane in 64, that is modal music is some of it's most developed form. Beside's you roping cool and modal togehther. They VERY different. Ever listen to Warren Marsh, Lee Konitz, Lenny Tristiano? Those are cool Jazz musicians that brought cool to the forefront.
