Wow this is actually kind of sad but true I guess that's the way society thinks. This might be what the future holds for us with all the new technology. Great job mike
Thank you for the kind words, but I have to admit, it is not in-depth analysis, but what is happening around me. It takes more time to get a co-worker's attention when they are plugged in than it does to shout out a question when they are two desks away and the other un-intended audiences can actually jump in and proffer a correction or additional information.
However, the video was great, props to the writer, director and camera person who made it come alive. The ping-pong balls.. brilliant!
@NeoRelationship Thanks so much for the compliments. And thanks especially for sharing the video with others! We're still trying to get the word out. Our festival premiere is in one week!
This is a great example of how society has started to become entangled with itself. Not necessarily narcisissm, but because there is so much noise around them they choose to shut off communication for the fear of being fed some advertisement.
Radio, Television, Internet... all channels of communication are so inundated by advertisement that people find a device which allows them to place their own music and/or music and "plug in". Someitmes we forget simple enjoyments in life.
@maple1255 Thanks. I'm glad you liked the film. We definitely wanted to have a pervading silence over the piece. Please spread it around, as we hope more people will enjoy it.
My response earlier was in response to the wrong video. I just realized that it was a different Motorola ad. The ad I just saw is actually a lot closer to this than the one I thought everyone was talking about.
Very good video, good job. However, like others have said, this video is about social detachment. The Motorola ad is about the lack of individuality and how Apple is way too controlling in what they allow you to do with YOUR device.
@MotweraCity Thanks for the reply. Glad you liked it! I know I sound like a broken record (or a busted iPod), but we'd obviously love if you'd share the film with others, through social networks, emails, snail mail, or smoke signals.
@wakazdf Haha. I think I've already been through enough with this one! I'm really glad you liked it. I can't promise a sequel, but I'd love if you'd spread the film around. Post on Facebook, Twitter, or any other pages you think might like it. Thanks for the response!
I absolutely think Motorola's ad agency ripped off DNCF. Happens all the time in the creative world. Unfortunately, copyright laws don't protect "ideas" but the "expression of an idea." Seems many people are naive to the fact that ideas are stolen all the time from YouTube posters. Of course, it should be said that the Motorola commercial had a different look and feel, but stole the essence of the film.
@xoxon1c The naivety is on the part of the film makers believing they have an original idea in the first place. in 'Do Not Disconnect' the conformity is expressed by accurately depicting a current social norm, with the players wandering aimlessly in a post apocalyptic urban wasteland, whereas in 'Empower the People' the conformity is suggested as being enforced - everyone robotically going in one direction in a sanitised totalitarian world. There is NO significant similarity between them.
Also, rewatching the Motorola spot I've noticed there are two completely different concepts in play here. Your piece is about people being completely oblivious to the outside world, asocial and detached even from physical stimuli. A nation of islands that aren't connected whatsoever. Motorola's piece is about conformity, social dependence, and a hive-mind mentality. The only thing in common with these pieces is the hardware and the notion that media dull our awareness somehow.
Similar concepts, but instead of a subtle spin on the idea, you hammer the idea over the viewer far too many times. This is not an original concept, not by a long shot. I could go into criticizing the cinematography, pacing, and everything else, but given the situation I feel it would be interpreted as ad hominem. At the root of it all, you've tried to lay claim to very, very obvious prior art, and you should probably consider calming this bad PR down before it proves you a laughingstock.
Hey guess what? Ideas aren't property. The superbowl ad was sufficiently different (and more effective, I might add - this thing put me to sleep).
I could cite about a dozen published science fiction stories that address this same topic - how come you are stealing their ideas? Or is it only stealing when someone else does it?
Not a copy at all. The Moto ad was definitely a homage to the original Apple ad, and the part at the end, well that's co-nincidental if anything—not a particularly inventive ending and I don't think it hasn't been thought of before.
@hasrinol Where in the Moto ad was this so called homage to Apple's 1984 ad? Was it the white earbuds? Nope. They came with Apple's iPod... long after '84. Was it the white hoodies? Nope. No hoodies in Apple's ad. Was it the tablet? Nope. Was it the dude rolling around in the chair? Nope.
What exactly was the homage again? (And your opinion isn't an homage)
@sper56 Thanks for the link but all I saw at 8 secs is the number 1984 as the guy turned the page on his tablet. That's not an homage, it's an insert. It has NOTHING to do with the film 1984 (as no-one is reading a book on a tablet computer in that film) and again NOTHING to do with Apple's 1984 Mac ad (again, no-one is reading any book in that ad. If it's not obvious to you then you need to watch your linked video again, and again, and again.
hahaha what a douche to claim that moto ripped your high school video
that's funny, what do they have in common, ideas, nothing else, so you think you're the first on only one to come up with the idea we need to let go of tech for a while, how conceded.
I don't feel that they were ripping off your film. I think you did a good job of promoting your film by making such accusations though. I mean come on in the ad it references 1984 the book literally. Its a counter in some way to apples 1984 commercial. Its the adage of someone waking up those that are unaware that they're consumed by some big monster/corporation/idea.
@AlexanderWilcox A line of people in hoodies and white earbuds in contrast to a dude rolling accross an office like a preppie isdirect refernce to the film 1984?
This is an ORIGINAL concept. Any theiving corporation who uses other people's ideas without acknowledging them deserves everything they get in return. Like bad PR.
@DoNotDisconnectFilm That's why I commented mate. The whole advertising industry is about stealing ideas from others, only now have they resorted to trawling the web and it sickens me. I like how Motorola's PR spun to every tech blog that it was a throw to Apple yet Apple took their 1984 campaign from the film 1984. Absolute red herring from Moto so they look clean. Not to mention the only throw to Apple were white earbuds?! I refuse to let theives like that get away with such blatant deception.
Ok, so I've watched your video. I like it. It's a bit fun, interesting, and puts out a good message: people need to learn to disconnect and look around. I think I'll share this with my friends. That being said, Motorola did not steal your idea. I'm sorry, but plenty of people will agree with me, this is a coincidence. Ever heard of Blade Runner? The author of another book saw the movie while he was still writing it and it came out being the exact same. It happens, get over yourself.
@renaius Thanks for watching. I'm really glad you liked it. I've always maintained since the original CNET article that the shared concept could be a coincidence. However, I also know where I worked in the commercial production business and where I pitched the film. The industry in LA is a lot smaller than people think. My goal has always just been to take this to the court of public opinion. I definitely respect yours. Thanks for sharing it and letting people decide for themselves.
@renaius No one asked you to watch it but you did. You also had to boast your opinion and talk down to the film maker of this film. Your opinion equals exactly zero to anyone but you. Get over yourself or go make a film where the concept is stolen, bastardised and pimped for a commercial product. You might then learn what it's like.
Doesn't anyone see through this person and his/her's short film comparison? The person who made this obviously thought, "hey, my film has people wearing headphones while walking around and then ends with a girl removing her headphones while smiling at a boy. I will claim that Motorola stole my idea and get tons of publicity and hits from it!"
Unfortunately it worked. :-\ They didn't steal your boring idea for a short film...
Dude, if they ripped off you, then I think you ripped off Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. It's not as though your idea is anything incredibly original.
I watched both videos and I don't think they copied or imitated you. It might just look that way to you because you're so close to your idea.
I prefer some things from theirs (high-tech future world, costumes, and brevity; but their ending was terrible), and some things from yours (everyone has headphones here and now, the frustration of the girl and the ending; but I didn't buy her original "awakening" to what was happening).
@venuecam I didn't say anything about money and I think you misread what I wrote. I said I didn't buy the girl's awakening in the video; that is there is something missing in making the awakening of the girl to the world around her more credible.
@codykonior You said you didn't buy the characters roles. I said you didn't pay to watch this. It's a double entendere. I read exactly what you wrote. You didn't get it.
even if they did rip off your film, which they really didnt, i would call it a proper execution of the concept. id rather spend 800 on a xoom than watch your future projects for free.
@acedotcom too bad you'll never accomplish anything in life other than making useless comments hiding behind your PC. Wow you live a great life. Can I be a failure like you someday?
@venuecam well aren't you a sad little bitch. funny how you hypocritically try to attack my criticism of this pretty crappy and average film while making your own "hiding behind a PC you have no life" comment. i have a suggestion for you: Go back to your kiddie porn bonanza and get over yourself. you will never amount to more then another hipster puppet.
I really like the music in this, especially the song played during the homeless guy and pool scenes. Can I get a name for it, or was it made just for this?
@DissidentIV The score is originally composed by Tikku Sircar. I think he did a really amazing job capturing the isolation and absurdism of the piece. You can see his contact info on my website: MSarrowFilmsDOTcom. Thanks for the comment.
What a complete waste of my time. Not only is this not even remotely similar to the Motorola commercial but it sucked beyond belief. This guy is simply trying to get attention for free.
I honestly don't think they took your idea. But you still have a great idea and have gotten a lot of attention because of the fact that they are similar!
@Peon546 Thanks for the reply. I'm glad you think the idea is a great one. Please share the movie with others. We really do want people to make up their own minds.
@indyFERente It's certainly possible they didn't. It could all be a coincidence, but I certainly see some striking similarities. Thanks for the comment. I hope you liked the movie and will share it with others.
Listen kids, and you must be kids if you think you are the center of the universe - just because you think of something doesn't mean you are the only ones or even the first. This idea is ancient, has been hashed out over decades in scifi books. And in Apples ad from 1984 which was what Motorola was sending up.
In short: Nothing was particularly inventive - get over it.
@aspushkin Thanks for the reply. I'm glad you liked the film. Personally, I feel that the overriding premise and concept of the piece is quite similar, down to the exact same sequence at the end. Still, I respect your opinion. That's why we're asking people to see the two works and judge for themselves. Thanks again.
The most common theme of the movie industry now is remakes and sequels and old ideas. It's easier to line your pockets with money when someone else already wrote the script, and as long as they make millions, it will stay that way. I applaud the work of any independent filmmaker in the hopes that they can break out of this cycle. However, independent filmmaking requires independent thinking. This is not it. Not a new idea, not a new presentation, not groundbreaking, not copied by Moto.
As the soundtrack to this film ironically proves, music is better than people. I prefer my tunes library to most of the human beings I come across. Interaction with people is the real prison.
@fabianumpierre Thanks for checking it out. We worked really hard on the sound mix because there's no dialogue to rely on. Brandon Griffith did an amazing job, especially at the end. I'd be so happy if you'd share the film with others. Facebook, Twitter, or anything. Every person counts. Thanks!
Do Not Disconnect, to me, is about social detachment. Empower the People, to me, is about conformity. I don't see how the concepts are remotely similar. Sure, they all have Apple ear-buds and at the end, they take them out, but they both have different meanings.
@sper56 DND has everyone in their own little world of music with the same white earbuds. That's not conformity? How many in the moto ad are interacting with each other? That's not social detatchment?
Do you read what you write or are you trying real hard to not like this short film?
@venuecam What I mean to say, is Empower the People is about conformity to Apple specifically. I think the brand of headphones in DND wasn't a specific attack to Apple, just portable media players in general. Again, it seems that the purpose to EtP is to show the alternative to Apple products.
Did you read what I wore, or are you trying real hard not to like my comment? It wasn't attacking the film, rather the claim that Empower the People stole Do Not Disconnect's ideas.
@sper56 Precisely. Environment plays a huge part in informing the audience about what the message is too. 'Empower the People' is blatantly parodying Apple's 1984 ad broadcast was on January 22, 1984, which in turn was parodying Orwell's novel, but specifically not Michael Radford's movie which was released in the USA on 14 December 1984. Whereas 'Do Not Disconnect' is set in a post apocalyptic urban wasteland.
This film accurately reflects the ennui felt by today's young adults. The usage of the mp3 player as a cause of schizoid personality disorder (a pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships), bears investigatation, as suggested by Mr. Sarrow. True connectivity, as depicted in this film's uplifting ending, is possible, and the writer and director has captured the essence of its importance. Bravo! Great performances! Interesting that once dispersed, the balls gravitated in pairs.
BRILLIANT! Ingenious, how the frustration is portrayed in an explosion of white ping-pong balls, all eventually going their own, inconsequential way, just like the rest of the masses...
I am a filmmaker, director and writer. I found no fault on this film. I enjoyed it immensely. I am not a movie critic. I understand how difficult it is to put a film together, orchestrating the elements, talent and crew and getting it done. This film does it confuse me in any way. I especially note the long static shot of the elderly couple going their separate ways and the ping pong balls bouncing on the floor in unison only to fall slowly apart. This is clean, well-crafted and elegantly done!
@wotstudios Thanks so much for the kind words. Please repost and share this video. Facebook, Twitter, whatever. I'd appreciate any support you can give!
Hello again, I wanted to let you know that I showed your film to my grade fives and asked them to comment on it. You can read some of their thoughts on our "Future of Friendship" blog at at thefutureoffriendship (dot) org.
@bijuvid While I'm very aware of the 1984/dystopian environment, I believe our film, which takes a homogenous population all plugged into white headphones, makes a unique commentary on today. Did you watch the film? You'll also see how similar the two ending sequences are, especially considering Motorola only has 1 minute of story. Thanks for checking out DND's YouTube channel.
Yes few time now, it is good. I want to make comment on the film, it is only second time when watched, I noticed the guy girl meet at the end is same as the guy sitting on the chair who followed her after seeing her get frustrated. So for average user like me you could have added extra shot showing the connection.
Additionally you could have added this as a response video to a popular "Empower the People" video on you tube.
@bijuvid Thanks for watching. In regards to the guy, I did want him to seem like "just another drone" in his introduction. Because it's not really integral to the plot, it's okay if it takes someone a second viewing. Then there's even a reason to watch a second time! :)
Re: Video Response. I have tried posting a video response. It tells me the video will be posted when the video owner (i.e. me) approves the request. Then they never send me a request in my video approval tag in my profile
Okay, I've been a little blunt here, & with justification. Your rendition is only very loosely similar to Motorola's. I've been ripped off professionally many times. What I learned from that is you have to tighten up the legal process at the outset. But there's a much more valuable personal lesson to be learned from Woody Guthrie. When told that someone had stolen one of his songs, he replied: "Oh he just stole from me, but I steal from EVERYBODY!" In essence, there's nothing new under the sun.
I've just read your bleating diatribe claiming your idea was plagiarised by Motorola & Anomaly NY ad agency. You admit: "...the film has been submitted already to several film festivals. So the plot and concept have been floating around for two years." Therefore the idea is in the public domain, & has been since you released it. Please explain why you're disappointed with anyone other than yourselves, & how you think any confidences were broken. Plus, legally the similarities are far too few.
Clearly you don't grasp the concept of public domain. Just because a song gets on the radio and is "floating around" for everyone to listen to, that doesn't make it in the public domain.
@symphonynoir Oh I have indeed grasped the concept of public domain. In terms of a concept for a movie, if you publish a version, that version is in the public domain. Did John Sturges pay Akira Kurosawa anything when he made 'The Magnificent Seven' a 1960 American western which is universally acknowledged as a remake of Kurosawa's 1954 film, 'Seven Samurai'? No, he did not. He changed the location and the dialogue and used guns instead of swords. Got it?
'Empower the People' differs from 'Do Not Disconnect' in the following ways: The girl and the guy are in confined postmodern spaces: elevators, subways and work environment - not the streets of a post apocalyptic wasteland and pool hall etc. Everyone is literally dressed the same except for the guy, instead of teen casual. He uses technology to get her attention, rather than encouraging him to remove his earbuds and abandon technology. These guys have nothing to complain about.
@G58 Wow, you're a huge idiot. "Works are in the public domain if they are not covered by intellectual property rights at all, if the intellectual property rights have expired,[1] and/or if the intellectual property rights are forfeited.[2] Examples include the English language, the formulae of Newtonian physics, the works of Shakespeare and Beethoven, and the patents on powered flight."
At least wikipedia that shit if you're going to pretend like you know what the fuck you're talking about.
@symphonynoir Okay, we've reached the name calling and quoting Wikipedia without editing the ref. parentheses stage! Your apparent emotional attachment to this project is touching but sadly misinformed & misguided. What IP do you think has been appropriated by the makers of 'Empower the People'. It's a simple question. Please don't try to tell us it's the concept of 'Do Not Disconnect', because any "idiot" can tell that the two stories are radically different. The only similarities are minor.
I wanted to like this. I really did. But the treatment of the 'characters' alienates them from the viewer - much more than it succeeds in demonstrating the intended message of disconnection. The reason is that the characters are all behaving in ways that no-one can identify with. Also, we don't actually live in a post apocalyptic wasteland. Ultimately I think the message is lost, and I don't see anything heartwarming here. Motorola's ad is lazy plagiarism, but of Ridley Scott's 1984, not this.
to keep this short and sweet, you sound bitter, as if the company that did a super bowl ad stole your idea or concept. IT happens, but hey the bright side is your "idea" or "concept" worked, and you can come up with more right? and now you have something for your reel, to show and showcase your other ideas, to get them funded, because everything has been done to death,EVERYTHING, just be clever in your delivery of it, and next time, get some legal advice before pitching.
you are or someone who was pitching was "A" list, or worked where ever, which doesn't make any sense because you should KNOW what a confidentiality agreement is. Keep making films or commercial spots, you'll figure it out.
@MisterRabbit78 You honestly seem to know about the industry. But I think you're neglecting how many ideas are pitched informally. More concepts are pitched over lunch than over an NDA.
Thank you so much for your support! Our project blog, with your now embedded video, can be seen online at thefutureoffriendship (dot) org. I am going to ask my students to view it and then comment on it tomorrow.
My grade five students and I are doing a project that is trying to examine that effects that technology is having upon human relationships, particularly on friendship. May we please embed your fine video into our project blog?
Thank you for your time and consideration of our request.
@BillBelsey I would be honored if you'd share my film with your students. I think it's really a good film for all ages. Any way you can spread the word of our small indie short would be appreciated! You really are Canada's coolest class.
Sweet little film. Her facial expression — the uncertainty and pain on her face as she sees him unplug — is priceless.
Still, you're right not to anticipate any credit from Motorola or the agency. All the two films have in common is a relationship and the removal of earbuds, no?
@dlandline Thanks for the positive comments. If you wouldn't mind sharing this around, I'd really appreciate! Every little post counts, and we're trying to get word out about the film.
Thanks Man. A MOVING POWERFUL short film. My partner & I have 2 WONDERFUL Grandchildren, 10 & 13, who spend every weekend & summer with us. They are engrossed into tech and the like. I am a programmer and design sites for corp customers - BUT - when work is done - I turn it off .The choreography &skills added to your amazing in site into where we're going!!! I set limits on my boys I-Pod/computer. We go fishing! KUDOS 2U & all involved
Recorded it for the boys this weekend! They'll understand!
@ncironman Congrats on the wonderful grandkids. I'm glad you liked the film. Please share the film. It was a small production and a labor of love, and enthusiastic responses like yours made it worth creating. Thanks!
This reminds me of my 2004 "Be There Not Here" business plan. The idea was, you could have not only audio but also video of someplace scenic and soothing, like a Florida beach, while you were riding a subway or in a noxious work environment.
That idea was a parody so I did nothing with it.
Isn't there a song titled "Do Not Diconnect" in a musical called "Broke?"
Sorry, but this has NOTHING to do with the Motorola Xoom ad (I got here via a link you posted related to that).
This is far superior. There's human emotion here.
Your guy is attracted to the girl because of her actions. I the Xoom ad, the guy (presumably a modern, independent thinker) is ONLY attracted to the girl (a mere drone) because of her looks.
@devbergey Thanks for the comment. I'd love if you would share the video, post it on your facebook, twitter, whatever. I'm hoping more people can see it. So many people put hard work into it, and we're really proud of the job. (Thank Miriam Gilbert, the production designer, for all those perfect ping pong balls!)
Pretty cool video and concept. I was expecting the little white balls to levitate back together into the shape of a man and fight with the girl. But seriously well done. It sure would be easy to take over the world if all you had to do was jack everyone who had something plugged into their ears... Hmmm...
@1016JP1 Thank you. All of those dystopian novels were certainly an influence, F451 included. We're glad you'd like it, and we'd love if you'd share it around.
nicely done. I liked the background music going "mono" at precisely the right moment. WNET-tv in the New York City, USA broadcast area, airs shorts....try their website....
@throwinghammer I'll look into that station. If you could share the film with others, we'd love it. We're not looking to sell anything. We just want our film out there! Thanks so much for the kind words.
@MADEDITOR05 Thanks for the question. We shot in late-2009, and finished in early-2010. Began submitting to fests in late-2010. Obviously, from casting to having an original score composed, this wasn't done overnight. The plan was always to screen online after our festival run, but the Motorola commercial changed everything. We don't want to seem as if we're ripping off that concept, so we uploaded immediately. We hope people will share the film if they like it, so we can get the word out.
This is Tonu from Tech Gear Examiner. I came here to watch your video as you requested and I have to say Im very impressed with this video. The messages conveyed in this video is strong and loud, and there is a lot of truth found in it.
I believe that sometimes we just need to disconnect from electronics and enjoy our surroundings more, the peace of natural music. Great Job! Thanks again for stoping by to read my piece about the Xoom on Superbowl. Have a good one.
@techgearhonolulu Thank you so much for checking out the video, Tonu. If you would, all the filmmakers involved would appreciate if you could add a link to your article on the Xoom Commercial. This film is really the original concept, and we're trying to get the word out. Thanks again for checking it.

OttoTheCyborg 1 year ago
Not a copy at all. The Moto ad was definitely a homage to the original Apple ad, and the part at the end, well that's co-nincidental if anything—not a particularly inventive ending and I don't think it hasn't been thought of before.
hasrinol 1 year ago
@hasrinol Where in the Moto ad was this so called homage to Apple's 1984 ad? Was it the white earbuds? Nope. They came with Apple's iPod... long after '84. Was it the white hoodies? Nope. No hoodies in Apple's ad. Was it the tablet? Nope. Was it the dude rolling around in the chair? Nope.
What exactly was the homage again? (And your opinion isn't an homage)
venuecam 1 year ago
@venuecam If it's not obvious to you, watch the following:
v=HhsWzJo2sN4

It's obviously modernized, but the homage should be clear
sper56 1 year ago
@sper56 Thanks for the link but all I saw at 8 secs is the number 1984 as the guy turned the page on his tablet. That's not an homage, it's an insert. It has NOTHING to do with the film 1984 (as no-one is reading a book on a tablet computer in that film) and again NOTHING to do with Apple's 1984 Mac ad (again, no-one is reading any book in that ad. If it's not obvious to you then you need to watch your linked video again, and again, and again.

hahaha what a douche to claim that moto ripped your high school video
that's funny, what do they have in common, ideas, nothing else, so you think you're the first on only one to come up with the idea we need to let go of tech for a while, how conceded.
boborone 1 year ago
@boborone Mate, an idea isn't a visual image. An idea is a creation from thought. How do you copy an idea? You can't.
The visual concept was copied, not the idea.
venuecam 1 year ago
I don't feel that they were ripping off your film. I think you did a good job of promoting your film by making such accusations though. I mean come on in the ad it references 1984 the book literally. Its a counter in some way to apples 1984 commercial. Its the adage of someone waking up those that are unaware that they're consumed by some big monster/corporation/idea.

@AlexanderWilcox A line of people in hoodies and white earbuds in contrast to a dude rolling accross an office like a preppie isdirect refernce to the film 1984?

DoNotDisconnectFilm 1 year ago
@DoNotDisconnectFilm That's why I commented mate. The whole advertising industry is about stealing ideas from others, only now have they resorted to trawling the web and it sickens me. I like how Motorola's PR spun to every tech blog that it was a throw to Apple yet Apple took their 1984 campaign from the film 1984. Absolute red herring from Moto so they look clean. Not to mention the only throw to Apple were white earbuds?! I refuse to let theives like that get away with such blatant deception.
venuecam 1 year ago
Ok, so I've watched your video. I like it. It's a bit fun, interesting, and puts out a good message: people need to learn to disconnect and look around. I think I'll share this with my friends. That being said, Motorola did not steal your idea. I'm sorry, but plenty of people will agree with me, this is a coincidence. Ever heard of Blade Runner? The author of another book saw the movie while he was still writing it and it came out being the exact same. It happens, get over yourself.
renaius 1 year ago 5
@renaius Thanks for watching. I'm really glad you liked it. I've always maintained since the original CNET article that the shared concept could be a coincidence. However, I also know where I worked in the commercial production business and where I pitched the film. The industry in LA is a lot smaller than people think. My goal has always just been to take this to the court of public opinion. I definitely respect yours. Thanks for sharing it and letting people decide for themselves.
DoNotDisconnectFilm 1 year ago

Do Not Disconnect, to me, is about social detachment. Empower the People, to me, is about conformity. I don't see how the concepts are remotely similar. Sure, they all have Apple ear-buds and at the end, they take them out, but they both have different meanings.
sper56 1 year ago 17
@sper56 DND has everyone in their own little world of music with the same white earbuds. That's not conformity? How many in the moto ad are interacting with each other? That's not social detatchment?
Do you read what you write or are you trying real hard to not like this short film?
venuecam 1 year ago
@venuecam What I mean to say, is Empower the People is about conformity to Apple specifically. I think the brand of headphones in DND wasn't a specific attack to Apple, just portable media players in general. Again, it seems that the purpose to EtP is to show the alternative to Apple products.
Did you read what I wore, or are you trying real hard not to like my comment? It wasn't attacking the film, rather the claim that Empower the People stole Do Not Disconnect's ideas.
sper56 1 year ago

DoNotDisconnectFilm 1 year ago
@DoNotDisconnectFilm
>Did you watch the film?
Yes few time now, it is good. I want to make comment on the film, it is only second time when watched, I noticed the guy girl meet at the end is same as the guy sitting on the chair who followed her after seeing her get frustrated. So for average user like me you could have added extra shot showing the connection.
Additionally you could have added this as a response video to a popular "Empower the People" video on you tube.
bijuvid 1 year ago
@bijuvid Thanks for watching. In regards to the guy, I did want him to seem like "just another drone" in his introduction. Because it's not really integral to the plot, it's okay if it takes someone a second viewing. Then there's even a reason to watch a second time! :)
Re: Video Response. I have tried posting a video response. It tells me the video will be posted when the video owner (i.e. me) approves the request. Then they never send me a request in my video approval tag in my profile
DoNotDisconnectFilm 1 year ago
Okay, I've been a little blunt here, & with justification. Your rendition is only very loosely similar to Motorola's. I've been ripped off professionally many times. What I learned from that is you have to tighten up the legal process at the outset. But there's a much more valuable personal lesson to be learned from Woody Guthrie. When told that someone had stolen one of his songs, he replied: "Oh he just stole from me, but I steal from EVERYBODY!" In essence, there's nothing new under the sun.
G58 1 year ago
I've just read your bleating diatribe claiming your idea was plagiarised by Motorola & Anomaly NY ad agency. You admit: "...the film has been submitted already to several film festivals. So the plot and concept have been floating around for two years." Therefore the idea is in the public domain, & has been since you released it. Please explain why you're disappointed with anyone other than yourselves, & how you think any confidences were broken. Plus, legally the similarities are far too few.
G58 1 year ago
@G58
Clearly you don't grasp the concept of public domain. Just because a song gets on the radio and is "floating around" for everyone to listen to, that doesn't make it in the public domain.
symphonynoir 1 year ago
@symphonynoir Oh I have indeed grasped the concept of public domain. In terms of a concept for a movie, if you publish a version, that version is in the public domain. Did John Sturges pay Akira Kurosawa anything when he made 'The Magnificent Seven' a 1960 American western which is universally acknowledged as a remake of Kurosawa's 1954 film, 'Seven Samurai'? No, he did not. He changed the location and the dialogue and used guns instead of swords. Got it?
G58 1 year ago
'Empower the People' differs from 'Do Not Disconnect' in the following ways: The girl and the guy are in confined postmodern spaces: elevators, subways and work environment - not the streets of a post apocalyptic wasteland and pool hall etc. Everyone is literally dressed the same except for the guy, instead of teen casual. He uses technology to get her attention, rather than encouraging him to remove his earbuds and abandon technology. These guys have nothing to complain about.
G58 1 year ago
@G58 Wow, you're a huge idiot. "Works are in the public domain if they are not covered by intellectual property rights at all, if the intellectual property rights have expired,[1] and/or if the intellectual property rights are forfeited.[2] Examples include the English language, the formulae of Newtonian physics, the works of Shakespeare and Beethoven, and the patents on powered flight."
At least wikipedia that shit if you're going to pretend like you know what the fuck you're talking about.
symphonynoir 1 year ago
@symphonynoir Okay, we've reached the name calling and quoting Wikipedia without editing the ref. parentheses stage! Your apparent emotional attachment to this project is touching but sadly misinformed & misguided. What IP do you think has been appropriated by the makers of 'Empower the People'. It's a simple question. Please don't try to tell us it's the concept of 'Do Not Disconnect', because any "idiot" can tell that the two stories are radically different. The only similarities are minor.
G58 1 year ago
I wanted to like this. I really did. But the treatment of the 'characters' alienates them from the viewer - much more than it succeeds in demonstrating the intended message of disconnection. The reason is that the characters are all behaving in ways that no-one can identify with. Also, we don't actually live in a post apocalyptic wasteland. Ultimately I think the message is lost, and I don't see anything heartwarming here. Motorola's ad is lazy plagiarism, but of Ridley Scott's 1984, not this.
G58 1 year ago
to keep this short and sweet, you sound bitter, as if the company that did a super bowl ad stole your idea or concept.
MisterRabbit78 1 year ago
you are or someone who was pitching was "A" list, or worked where ever, which doesn't make any sense because you should KNOW what a confidentiality agreement is. Keep making films or commercial spots, you'll figure it out.
MisterRabbit78 1 year ago
@MisterRabbit78 You honestly seem to know about the industry. But I think you're neglecting how many ideas are pitched informally. More concepts are pitched over lunch than over an NDA.
