Gars are awesome fish, but alligator gars will grow way to large for the average, or even large home aquarium. They are fast growers BTW, and will grow larger than their environment when compared to some other fish. When their growth is stunted by too small of an aquarium, it will cause internal health problems. As far as where to get them, try aquabid.com or even craigslist. As far as compatibility with tankmates, gars are usually very docile and get stressed quite easily by other fish that ar
my gar is a little over a foot and i have a 75 gallon the width of the tank should always b longer then the gar.......the width of mine is 18in 4ft long
i c ic its the light whats making him look like red but i think gars keep growing no matter what the tank size is ...i say at least 300 gallon minimum for a long run...nice fish btw gud luck

I live in louisiana! I dont buy them n crap, I CATCH THEM( but i dont have one as a pet :( i do make sure the fully recover though)
