  • My 347 has been putting 400rwtq through the stock t5 for a while.. definitely doesn't like it but it's still together. Just have to drive it careful around 3rd gear.

  • A stock t5 is only good for 350lbs of torque. Id build the crap out of it.....

Ive heard carbon fiber synchros help. The clutch is the major weak link...but that has to do with your rearend gearing also. 3.73's or higher are much easier on your clutch.

  • Auto w/ transbreak, shift kit would eat a 5 speed

  • @Djb3674 Not what I wanted... I'm not a bracket racer I wanted the fun factor! An with the 5 speed it has been!

  • GO TO BUILT AOD!!!!

  • DO NOT GO TO T-5 GET A BUILT AOD!!!!!!

  • @laford1986 I put in the T-5 and I have no regrets, I know all about auto's and I wanted to go stick for the fun factor. I know the consistency won't be there, but i'm not bracket racing nor hitting the strip more then twice a year.

  • @89lx5o Consistancy can be there with a T5, it just takes a driver mod. I can run 14.20s @ 97 mph every run with no problems.

  • @89lx5o I hear ya brah. With the T5, just about any type of racing you wanna do is open to you competitively. With a built AOD you'd dominate the street/strip but never really get beyond that. I'd rather be inconsistent and not as fast at the strip than have only the 1320 to play with....

  • @89lx5o Sticks put more to the rear wheels and stick trannies respond better... A stick is better for racing if auto was better nascar would have autos. The only way Id use a auto is if my car had 1k+ HP.

  • @SuRihtanil Nascar doesn't drag race.

  • What heads, cam, intake do you have? It this still speed density?

  • @steveso007

Trickflow heads, Anderson n-41 cam, and Trickflow twisted wedge heads. It is mass air these kinds of mods pretty much require it being mass air unless you convert to carbed.

  • This setup is good for high 11's low 12's.

I would be pissed if I was you!

I have the same cam and track heat heads!

  • @89stanghondaslayer No reason for me to be pissed I know why it runs what it does... It's all in the trans. This car needs a stall converter or a manual trans in it an I'll be running 12's/11's right next to ya. What trans do you have? My T-5 is sitting in my garage ready to go in, I need a few more parts and it should be installed by spring.

  • I am running a tremec 3550 with a mcleod twin disc.

I would do the t5 conversion, It would be so much faster.

  • @89stanghondaslayer I know that's why I'm doing it.. lol

  • Definitely needs gears and suspension and 12's with some driving skill will get there.

  • @ThunderMonarch

The suspension work is already done at the time of this vid. I need the gears and the ability to launch higher then 1800-2000 rpms.

  • @89lx5o trans brake im tellin ya...

  • 89lx - I had a bone stock '87 LX back in the day, 5-sp with stock gearing and I hit 14.18 at a little over 100... I had an early production model and I hear they installed air baffles at some point to limit noise (and performance). Those old 5.0's were pretty stout motors! There was a magazine out back then that did some minor tweaks and got an LX in the low 13's...

  • i think i'd stick with an auto in the long run

maybe a full manual c4 or something

  • not trying to be a noob but what is hci?

  • Short for saying that it has upgraded cylinder heads, camshaft, and intake manifold

  • O ok i feel dumb, thanks

  • exactly what i was gonna get too; stalled and with a kit

    hopefully i like it

my friends old AOD-E held up find with his 347, so maybe ill like it with my H/C/I

  • I was going to upgrade mine and use a manual valve body, but I already have my 5 speed stuff so I might as well do the swap. If I don't like it or want consistency I can always switch back to the AOD.

  • well, looks like im getting 4:10's lol

    i hate AODs man

  • The Aod isn't bad if it's modded with a stall converter and a valve body these things can get it done, but in stock form they just plain suck!

It's been reliable too... It's all original has had the 1-2-1 shuffle done more times then I can count, has spent the past year behind HCI, and still works fine.. lol

  • sweet stang! you said you had 4.10s before how did you like them?

  • The 4.10s were great for the aod, my car would probably be a full second faster if I still had them in...

  • yeah mine is an aod and im thinking of getting 4.10s but im a little worried about high rpms on the highway

  • You will def see a major decrease in MPG. I used to get about 24-26 mpg on the highway with stock gears.. W/ the 4.10s I got about 17.

If you daily drive I'd recommend 3.73 if you rarely have it on the highway then def go with the 4.10s you will enjoy it on the street much more...

  • thanks i appreciate your feedback

  • im new to the fox body scene. always wanted one when i was younger, and I picked up a nice 89 lx notch not too long ago. you ran a nice time, but don't the coupes run mid to low 13's with just drag tires, gears and a totally stock motor?

  • Depends on the trans and there's other factors too...

My car with D/R 4.10 gears and the stock AOD before all my motor work went 14.1

With a 5 speed it would have been into the 13's for sure...

  • the AOD trans adds about a full second over a t-5 transmission.. its bs

  • you'd take off about 0.2-0.3 seconds with a steeper gear, like 3.73

  • what setup are you running on the car?

  • Trick flow twisted wedge heads, anderson n-21 cam and Trickflow street intake. Everything else is in the info thing.

  • you would be in the low 12's with a 5speed, sticky tires, and the driver mod

    ;)

very nice for a stock AOD. where is it shifting at?

my old AOD shifted at 5k in first and second, and 3rd it would sometime's shift at 5k, but most the time slip into overdrive at around 4200rpm even with the stick in the drive position!

lol, i have a deep hatred for ford AOD tran's

    good luck.

  • dude you need a stall converter and some 4.10 or something. You can have a way better 60ft time than that! i ran 14.44 at 97 with stock motor 5 speed and 3.73 gears..on bald tires. and i was cuttin 2.1 60ft times. was only leavin at like maybe 3,000rpms

  • Trust me I know... lol

This was just a base line run to see what my improvement will be w/ 5 speed swap and gears. Before I did the HCI I had 4.10's out back and ran 14.1 so my 1/4 time w/ the HCI only improved a few tenths, but my mph rocketed.

  • not to bad man. Love the sound of your car! I'm just about done with my Built. I'll be posting on the fourms in the next few days. User Smoked88GT on AFM

  • Thanks
