Bear played under coach Frank Thomas at Alabama. Thomas played under Knute Rockne at Notre Dame. Bear installed his Rockne' offense (Notre Dame box) when he coach briefly at Union College. Thomas was a gruff coach as well who worked his boys hard as well as his previous predecessor, Wallace Wade who coached Alabama to the first National Championship in 1925. Wade played at Brown and was a teammate of Fritz Pollard.
